- Fnordadel Rooms Tutorial
-
- Basically, a Fnordadel BBS is a ring of rooms. A room is simply a
- collection of related messages -- a room corresponds to a "message base" or
- "SIG" on other systems. Each room has a name, followed by one of four special
- characters which tell you what kind of room it is:
-
- ">" Normal room; you can read and enter messages in it.
- "]" Directory room; you can read and enter messages as in a normal room,
- but there is also a disk directory attached to it, so you can upload
- and download files as well.
- ")" Shared room; if you have network privileges, you can enter messages
- here that are sent to all other systems in the network which share
- this room. If you haven't got net privileges, you can still enter
- local messages, as well as read all messages (networked or not). Or,
- if the room has been set up as "auto-net" by somebody, you don't need
- net privileges to post networked messages.
- ":" Shared Directory room; combines the features of a "]" and a ")" room.
-
- The system probably also is set up with "floors", which are groups of
- related rooms. See .H(elp) FLOORS.
-
- To get a list of all the rooms in the system that are available to you, use
- the [K]nown rooms command. If you are in floor mode, you'll only see available
- rooms on the current floor, so use the .K(nown rooms) or ;K(nown-floors)
- commands instead. .K(nown rooms) can take some options to show you certain
- kinds of rooms; see ".K(nown rooms) ?" for a list.
-
- The "room prompt" is the command prompt at which you enter most commands.
- It consists of the name of the room you are in, followed by a special
- character, as in:
-
- Lobby>
- The Library]
- Atari ST)
- Fabulous Warez:
- <etc>
-
- There are some twists to this room business: The Mail> room is a special
- room that lets you send private mail to other users, both on this system and
- possibly on other systems across the network. There may also be "anonymous"
- rooms, where users can post messages that are not identified in any way. Some
- rooms may be designated as "read-only", and only users with Aide or Sysop
- standing can post messages there (typically for announcements and such).
