Welcome to Omni BBS. I am glad you made this software your choice
in telecommunication handling. This is a public domain version of
a much bigger and better multi-line telecommunication package that I
will be releasing in 1992. I am releasing this version right now, so I
can gather some funding for hardware research, and also to get suggestions
from other system operators on what they would like in an affordable multi-
line communication system. Please keep this in mind as you use this soft-
ware. If you would like the unrestricted version of single-line OMNI,
send $30 to the address below. The next version (OMNI Ver 1.20) will
be available September 1, 1991. This purchase will register you with
No Preservatives Software and will discount future releases of OMNI.

------------------------
HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS
------------------------
Omni BBS is designed to run on most any configuration of ST and TT system,
including 520ST's and also with only one drive.
When using with one drive, a RAM disk is required and no file transfer sections
will be operable. Also, very small message bases are only allowed. Running
Omni with only one disk drive (floppy) is obviously discouraged and a hard
drive is definitely recommended.
------------------------
INSTALLING OMNI
------------------------
To install Omni, follow these steps:
1. Create a folder on your hard disk/floppy disk to hold all of your Omni
files. It can be named anything you like, but we suggest using OMNISYS
for a descriptive folder name.
2. Place the files that are needed for installation in the folder
you just created. These files are:
INSTALL.PRG
OMNI.DAT
OMNI_101.PRG
FILE_UTL.PRG
MESS_UTL.PRG
3. Run INSTALL.PRG and follow the prompts.
*NOTE* You must have decided if you are going to be using a RAM Disk,
the working directory (the folder you created), and hardware
configurations.
------------------------
RUNNING OMNI
------------------------
Sysop Options
-------------
The sysop's Options may be called at any time from either the local
terminal by pressing "UNDO", or typing "%" at the Main Menu prompt.
Typing "%" will only call the sysops options, though, if the user
who types it has access to the options.
There are two types of options: Local Only, and Local & Remote. (See
diagram SO-MEN Below).

------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Diagram SO-MEN]
Here are descriptions of each command:
----------------
LOCAL ONLY:
----------------
CHAT - Forces the remote user (if any) into direct chat mode.
This mode allows the sysop and remote user to talk "Real-
Time" with each other.
Only the Sysop (Local) can exit chat mode by pressing
UNDO key.
DETACH - Forces the remote user off the system and resets the
devices to wait for another call. It does not affect the
sysop's process in any way.
This function is extremely useful for resetting the modem
after a modem/user malfunction -- It will usually return
everything back to normal Omni mode.
JOIN - Allows the sysop to "join" the remote user's current
session by adding a branch to the BBS's output. The
sysop has full typing capabilities, as if he/she were
sharing the remote user's computer. One advantage is
that the sysop can still access the sysop options --
therefore allowing the sysop to jump in and out of the
current user's session without the user ever noticing!
RESUME - Resumes all multi-tasking by re-attaching all remote tasks
to their respective task drivers.
Page 6
STATS - Displays a continually updating statistics screen of the
system's tasks, jobs, and processes.
SUSPEND - Suspends ALL multi-tasking to allow the sysop full access
to the computer's processor. The remote user (if any)
will be notified of such an event with a "System Halted"
message whenever he/she presses a key. This does NOT
disconnect the remote user!
SHUTDOWN- Closes all Omni's data files and removes Omni from your
computer's memory -- returning control to a single user
at the desktop.
----------------
LOCAL/REMOTE:
----------------
ACCESS - Allows validation of new users, modification of existing
accounts, and deletion of existing accounts.
Modifications consists of selecting terminal type, first &
last names, password, and access flags.
BACKUP - Utility for adding/changing/deleting backup jobs on queue.
There are up to 100 different backup jobs available - all
can be working simultaneously.
See section titled "Backup Utility" for more information.
BILL - Keeps billing records for every account -- keeps track
of each account's time on the system, including the charge
per each time of day, and even produces month-end invoices
to be sent to the user.
**This utility is Non-Operating in this Demo Version!**
CONFIG - Allows the sysop to change the active date, time, and
pager flags.
EDITOR - Allows editing of any ascii file on the local system.
Uses the appropriate editor for the terminal emulation
currently being used.
INSTALL - Re-installs the text files from disk to the board's
memory for permanent & immediate updating of menu's,
databases, etc.
MESSAGE - Allows creation/modification/deletion of message bases
available to the users.
QUEUE - Displays the current jobs on the printer queue.
**The Demo Version does not allow purging of the printer
queue.**
RATES - Sets the hourly rates per each day of the week.
Charges are broken down into two parts:
CPC - Charge Per Credit
CPM - Credits Per Minute
Calculated from these two values is the CPH (Charge per
Hour).
**This Demo Version will truncate any decimal in the CPH**
Page 7
REPORT - Allows sysop to view the board's system reports, including
LASSO, HANGUPS, and System Bootup Files (See Diagram
SO-REP Below).
EXIT - Exits from the sysop options and returns to the Main Menu.

BACKUP UTILITY
-----------------------
Several screens are shown in this section to aid in learning the backup
section's features.
Here is the main backup screen:
-~-~-

-~-~-
The 10 jobs listed on this screen are the 10 main backups controlled in OMNI.
Each of these jobs can have 10 jobs within them, each of these jobs backing up
a certain section of the boards reports, utilities, sections, etc.
Page 8
Here is a screen of main backup job #0:

You now see the 10 sub-jobs included in main backup job #0. In this
example, only seven of the ten jobs are being used. The "JOB TITLE" column
states the actual part of the bbs that will be backed up. The "OPTION" column
is used for backup "titles" (sub-jobs) that may need further breakdown still;
such as when backing up a message base, the OPTION column specifies which base
you want to backup.
**NOTE** In the message base backup, 1 - xx is the number of the message
base you wish to backup, 0 is E-Mail.
For demonstration purposes, let's change sub-job event #7.
Here's the screen you will see next:

At this point, you would type '1' to make changes permanent.
**NOTE** If you would like to disable a certain Main Job event without
deleting it, then use this above method to change ONLY the device
to '0'. This will disable that job, and to enable it again, simply
set the device back to a logical drive.
Most of the backup utility is self-guiding, as you see with this little walk-
through.
One particularly interesting feature of this backup utility is that you can
have each Main Job with all ten Sub-Jobs active, and all the Main jobs starting
at the same time -- even with the same backup device! It is completely multi-
tasking and shares drives & files accordingly! In that case, you can have up
to 100 backup jobs running at the same time without any errors or intersecting
of separate jobs.
When a backup is in progress, the current user (if any) will be notified of
such an event, and therefore will be expecting some sort of slow-down. The
only real noticeable slowdown is when the backup jobs are sharing a floppy
drive.

MAIN MENU FUNCTIONS
------------------------
When on the system, the main menu is the menu that all of the branches
of options on the system can be accessed from.
The original Main Menu screen appears like this:
(This and all other text files can be changed using a simple text
editor and/or OMNI's on-line editors.)

MENU FUNCTION DESCRIPTIONS:
---------------------------
A - Adds a BBS name/phone number to the user-available list of
other BBS's locally or nationally.
B - Reads current system bulletin. The bulletin is always
displayed upon login anyway.
C - Checks the mail system's log for E-Mail (Electronic Mail)
for any mail addressed to you. NOTE: If you have sysop's
access, you will be able to read everybody's mail, whether it
be addressed to you or not.
Page 13
E - Allows the user to enter a message in one of the message bases
created by the sysop. The message base is selected by the user
via menu selection after pressing "E".
The editor used by the message system is dependant of the
user's terminal emulation (See Appendix B for more details).
F - Enters the File Transfer board. (See section labeled "Using
the File Transfer" in this Guide).
G - Properly logs the current user off and displays time on
statistics before disconnecting. This is the way any good
payee should log off - being that HOW they log off is kept
on record!!
H - Enters Help Sub-System.
I - Displays the text file stating your computer's hardware and
software running the board.
L - Displays the current list of paid accounts on the system at
the time the list is requested. (On non-pay systems such as
this demo version, all accounts except new users are listed).
M - Send E-Mail to another user (including Sysop). The editor
used is always the Ascii Line-Editor (See Line Editor Section
for more information on this editor), regardless of the
current terminal emulation.
N - Lists the NEW users (unpaid) users on the system at the exact
time this list is requested. These are the users that can be
validated locally or remotely using "ACCESS" from the Sysop's
Options" Menu.
O - List of other BBS's that were added using the "A"dd option.
Q - Short listing of message headers for quick scanning of
messages in a certain selected directory.
S - Lists the daily report of users on-line, and certain
activities such as how they logged off - etc.
T - Simply informs the user of the current Time & Date, according
to the system, anyway!
V - Allows the user to view text files contained in the database
(placed there by the sysop), via menu selection. See diagram
MM-DAB for suggestions on how to use this section.
W - Allows the user to change the current header. The header
is the string that is displayed before each prompt, usually
after a menu.
This header is not user-dependant, so the header will not
change until it is changed again by another user at another
time.
X - Toggles Normal and Expert modes. Normal is default. Expert
mode doesn't display most menus, therefore decreasing time
on the system.
Y - Pages sysop for chat. The page sounds for about 3 seconds,
then keeps the pager flag on for the sysop to see on the bottom
of the screen, in case he/she doesn't hear the beeper.
Z - Lists the currently available message bases on the system.
Due to the nature of OMNI's multi-tasking, the list can change
from one minute to another if the sysop adds another/changes a
message base while a user is on-line.
---------
% - HIDDEN SYSOP COMMAND -- Allows access to Sysop's Options.
Can be used locally or from remote!

In this file, you layout this screen on how you want your database
to look. This file is displayed to the user, then prompts them for
a response. The response can be from 1 to 3 Characters. The file
that is should be located in the DATABASE directory, and the name
should be DATABASE.??? Ya, you got it. The 3 character response is
the ???. This is sort of an open way to leave a database. You can
do multi scans on one topic. Ex.

( A ) - Information on drugs A00 - A99

( B ) - Information on cars B00 - B99

or you could do it with just a simple list of all the topic names.

** NOTE **
This file, DATABASE.TXT, can not be over 24 lines in length.
nor can any other file with the ext. of TXT.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Diagram MM-DAB]
Using this method, you could have up to 2,600 different database files!
.A00 - .Z99 : 26 x 10 x 10 = 2,600
Using extensions of three letters, up to 17,576 database files!
.AAA - .ZZZ : 26 x 26 x 26 = 17,576

----------------------
USING THE EDITORS
----------------------
There are two editors available from OMNI. There is a line editor for
ascii-only terminals, and a unique full screen editor called EDITOR-2000
for VT-52, ANSI, and Televideo 925 emulations.
Using the Line Editor:
----------------------
This ASCII editor uses the familiar "/" command structure.
Here is a brief description of each command offered:
/A - Aborts the current message, DOES NOT SAVE.
/E - Edits a block of text; prompts for starting and ending lines
to edit.
/H - Provides a brief description of the available commands.
Redisplays the last three lines of your message after the
Help segment.
/L - Lists a block of text, starting line to ending line.
/S - Saves the current message on the system. In the case of
private mail to sysop, it will print the message on the local
printer IF the printer queue is activated.
Using EDITOR-2000:
------------------
This is a revolutionary editor that uses pop-up windows and
features full-screen editing, without the aid of a slave terminal
program!
This editor is compatible with VT-52, ANSI, and Televideo 925.
The editor begin with a small menu box at the bottom of the
screen. This box contains only a small portion of the control
codes allowed in the editor. To call up a help menu that lists
all other available control codes, press CTRL-X.
Here is a brief description of each of the commands offered by
EDITOR-2000:
^A - Moves to top of document.
^Z - Moves to end of document.
^B - Homes cursor to top of current page.
^S - Exits editor with option to save or abort (without saving).
^Q - Delete current line (selected by cursor position), moves all
information below deleted line up.
^E - Delete character under cursor.
Page 16
^I - Insert line where cursor is positioned. Subsequent lines are
moved down.
^K - Insert character in current line at cursor position.
^J - Homes cursor on current line.
^R - Cursor up.
^F - Cursor down.
^D - Cursor left.
^G - Cursor right.
^O - Page Up.
^L - Page Down.
^P - Goto page number ... (1-33)
^X - Help window.
^C - Refresh screen.
(Due to line noise, sysop chat breaks, etc., this function
will redraw your screen and refresh your document to it's
original state before the interrupts/noise).
Page 17
--------------------------
USING THE FILE TRANSFER
--------------------------
The file transfer utility (included in the original .ARC file) is used to add,
change, and delete file transfer sections and files in sections. To use this
utility, double-click on FILE_UTL.PRG from the desktop.
From this menu-driven utility, you can ADD, REMOVE, CHANGE, ENTER, MAKE .TXT,
and QUIT.
ADD Adds a new file transfer section to your BBS's list.
Enter the name of the section, description of section,
the location (drive:path) for the section, and finally
the size (in bytes).
REMOVE Completely erases a file transfer section from your
BBS and your hard disk. It will prompt for the number of
the section to remove, then will prompt for authorization
to remove. **USE WITH CAUTION!**
CHANGE Allows the changing of the file section's Name and its
description. **NOTE** To change the size allocated for
a particular section, use "E"NTER DIRECTORY!
ENTER Opens a particular section by number. See below for the
list of options within this item.
MAKE Makes new text file for the BBS to read. This is the
menu that prompts the user to select which file transfer
section to enter.
QUIT Exits this utility.
---------------------
Inside the "ENTER" command, these options are available:
ADD Adds (fakes an upload) a certain file to the section.
