11/19/89 - Released to Shareware
--------
My thanks go to Chris Gregory for initially developing this
game and then allowing me to do revisions on it. Chris has
since stopped work on any more Online Games, so I have taken the
initiative to correct some bugs and add a few things to SPACER.
It's my hope in doing this that I can provide a better game for
ST boards. Since starting on the revisions, I'm not sure if I will
be doing anymore actual additions to what the game already contains.
Perhaps if I find time in the future, or get some good ideas suggested,
I will be willing to do more work.
Chris originally stated that he wished the game to be
released as public domain software. In that regard, the game is
now complete and does not need to be registered. THE GAME CAN BE
PLAYED AS A COMPLETE GAME AS IT IS...NOTHING IS MISSING FROM THE
GAME.
On the other hand, I have put extensive work into Spacer and
would hope that I can get some support for it. Therefore, the
versions I release will be as SHAREWARE. Those who are kind
enough to donate $5 or $10 will get my assistance with any further
bugs or suggestions towards improving the game. Support cheques
(that has a weird ring to it) can be sent to:

Following are the docs I have revised for Sysops to setup Spacer.
----------------------
Version 4.36 - 01/19/90
- Oops. My fault on this minor bug. A players own ship will show up
as a possible target when in combat mode. Fixed this one.
- The Daily Maintenance program (SP_MAINT.TOS) now looks for a file
called "SP_MAINT.SET" in the same folder as the program itself.
This file consists of 2 lines which are sent to the modem.
Example:
ATH1 --> Line 1: Modem command to take off-hook. Sent at start
of program to give busy signal to callers
ATH0 --> Line 2: Modem command to place on-hook. Sent at end of
program to place modem back online.
If you do not wish for the maintenance program to send any commands
to the modem, then do not create a file called SP_MAINT.SET
If you wish to use only one of the command lines, then the unused
command line should contain the word "NONE" in caps.
Example:
ATH1 --> Line 1: Command sent to modem at start of program
NONE --> Line 2: Ignored
-----------------------
Version 4.35 - 01/17/90
IMPORTANT: Previous versions of SPACER will NOT work with this new
version. You must start a new game of SPACER.
Use SP_SETUP.PRG to create the correct data files.
- BUG: Even though player is not in a starsystem or orbitting a planet,
they could still access the corresponding options at the Navigation
Control Menu (ie. they could orbit or land on a non-existent planet).
- NEW: Players can now specify if they wish Planet Production to be sold
immediately at the start of each new day OR store units on the player
for manual retrieval by the player. This is choosen when a player first
chooses the production for a new planet OR when he decides to change the
production of a planet he already owns from the Cargo Control Menu.
- NEW: Sysop Shell now available to players who have Sysop access. Names of
players with Sysop Access is saved in the file "SPACER.SYS".
If you do not wish to use this option, delete "SPACER.SYS".
- use SP_SETUP.PRG to create "SPACER.SYS"
- can also use any wordprocessor to create "SPACER.SYS".
Enter 1 username per line. Place "SPACER.SYS" in your main
SPACER folder with your other data files.
Sysop Shell allows deletion of players, list of usernames of players,
and sending Sysop System Messages to players.
- NEW: Can now attack ships that are in the same starsystem, NOT just in
the same planet.
----------
Version 4.2 11/27/89
- Revised/improved Modem Routines (now includes type-ahead buffer)
- scanners can be damaged. Takes time to repair or option to buy
a new scanner. Damaged scanner will give static on scans
depending on how badly damaged scanner is.
- Able to now Hyperspace Jump to any sector, not just adjacent
sectors. Limiting factor will be fuel and time.
- minor fixes to attack procedures/algorithms
----------
Version 4.1 11/13/89
- Added computer controlled Mercenary ships to add some movement
in the game.
- placed daily maintenance routines in a separate program so they
can be run at the end of the day without having a user wait.
- Fixed a lot of minor bugs so the game works (knock on LOTS of wood)
- Cosmetics
- Changed modem routines to something that is hopefully more secure

NOTE TO OWNERS OF SPACER v3.0 OR EARLIER
This new version is NOT COMPATIBLE with any previous versions
of Spacer before v4.1. You MUST start a completely new game according
to the following docs. Delete your old SPACER.SET file and run
SP_SETUP.PRG to create a new one.
SP_SETUP.PRG
This program will create all the files needed to run the game
for you. This program MUST be run in the same folder that you will
be running the actual game program from.
REQUIREMENTS
1. BEFORE you start up this program go make a spacer folder
wherever you will be running it at.
2. Inside of the Spacer folder you NEED two other folders:
- one named MESSAGES for messages between players
- one named SECTORS for sector game data (created by game)
I do this to cut down on so many files in one folder amd make it
a bit neater.
3. Once you have done this, run SP_SETUP.PRG.
SETUP
1. What we should first create is the setup file so choose the
option to do this and the program is pretty self explanatory but
if you need help, refer to my example.
Example of my setup file:
EXPRESS | LINE 1
NOT FOR EXPRESS OR OTHER | 2
E:\SPACER\ | 3
E:\SPACER\SPACER.SCO | 4
E:\SPACER\SPACER.TOP | 5
E:\SPACER\SPACER.LOG | 6
E:\SPACER\SPACER.DOC | 7
E:\SPACER\INTRO.DOC | 8
E:\SPACER\TODAYNEW.TXT | 9
E:\SPACER\OLDNEWS.TXT | 10
200 | 11
25 | 12
5 | 13
75000 | 14
10 | 15
Line 1 shows just the type of BBS used. ( Must be in caps )
Line 2 is only for Forem and Star software and is the path to the
user file where spacer will extract their information.
Express and Other type software do not care what is on this
line as long as SOMETHING is on this line.
Line 3 is just the path to the SPACER folder.
Line 4 is the path and file name of the scoresheet. You can make
the name of the scoresheet whatever you desire.
Line 5 is the path and file name for the Top 10 List.
Line 6 is the path and file name of the game log.
Line 7 is the path and file name of the game docs.
Line 8 is the path and file name of the introduction to the game.
Line 9 is the path and file name of the Current news.
Line 10 is the path and file name of the Last days news.
Line 11 is the amount of Time they can play the game. It is not
real time but rather a measure of how much they can do in the
each day in the game.
Line 12 is how many players the game will allow. For a 1 Meg ram
system don't go over 25 players. This program eats alot of ram.
Line 13 is what size universe that you will use in the game. I
recommend that you use a 5 here. This means a 5 X by 5 Y
universe. You can always try a bigger one in the future. The X
and Y values will always be the same.
Line 14 is the score at which the game is won.
Line 15 is the number of inactive days allowed before a player is
auto-deleted. If you do not wish auto-deletion, then place a
0 (numeric zero) at this line.
2. The next thing to do is to create the player data files.
You must remember to create the SPACER.SET file first with option #1.
If the SPACER.SET is not found, it can't create the necessary files.
If you encounter an error -33 (God forbid), take a look at the
SPACER.SET. Make sure it resides in the same folder as the Spacer
programs and you have defined/spelled all the pathnames correctly.
3. Where to put your setup file. This is the hardest part to
figure out. As far as I know, it should reside in the same folder
as the SPACER.TOS, SP_MAINT.TOS, and SP_SETUP.PRG programs. As I
run an EXPRESS board, I'm not sure how the other BBSs work. If the
folder can be set to the Spacer folder before any program is run, then
you shouldn't encounter problems. For EXPRESS sysops, this means
changing the directory in your scripts before running a program
(see sample script included).
4. All files should be placed in the Spacer folder as defined
in Line 3 of the SPACER.SET file you created. The folders named
MESSAGES and SECTORS should reside within your Spacer folder also.
RESTARTING A GAME
Hopefully (knock on wood), the program should automatically reset
the game after a winner has been declared. At the same time, the
winner should also be added to the Top 10 List of Champs. Winners are
decided by the Top score you entered in the SPACER.SET file.
If you decide to manually restart the game, you will have to run
SP_SETUP.PRG locally and create the new data files. It shouldn't be
necessary to re-create the SPACER.SET file if you wish to keep the same
pathnames and settings.
