Transcendence BBS (Demo) Shareware v0517
Written by David Brown & Wayne Watson
{}-===========================================================-{}
Thanks for taking the time to try out the latest BBS program
for your Atari ST computer. Transcendence is a full featured
bulletin board package. It has almost every feature a systems
operator could need. The program was designed to be as flexible
as possible, user friendly, and powerful.
DISCLAIMER:
This program is *Shareware*. That is, you may copy it for
friends, transmit it to electronic services, or distribute it
though a public library. You may not charge anything for the
software (Other than a reasonable shipping cost [$5 or less]).
You may not add, delete or alter any of the files inside of this
archive before distributing it. If you do copy it for another
person, you must copy the original package with its original
contents.
The authors of this program have made every attempt to make
this program as bug-free as possible. We advise you to use this
software at your own risk, we can in no way be responsible for
loss of data, or damage to your hardware caused from this
software.
HISTORY
Transcendence was originally started by David Brown, in 1988.
Last year Wayne Watson began working on the program. Wayne is
responsible for the file area interface, the systems editor, the
external protocols, and many other miscellaneous areas.
Most of the features in this program were suggested from
sysops around the world. Unlike most of the other BBS programs on
the ST platform, Transcendence has many features previously only
seen in the IBM market.
The goal was to create a program that the sysop could modify
in any way he or she wanted. Thus, you can change the way the BBS
looks almost totally. Unlike other BBS programs for the ST a new
user may not always know exactly what software you are running,
you can totally change the way the BBS looks and acts. You can
add external mods, support almost any terminal emulation, and so
on.
LIMITATIONS
Since this is a *SHAREWARE* program, there are some
restrictions. If you decide you want to use this software, you
may register your copy for $49.95. After you register you will
receive a special file that will make your BBS full-functioning.
The shareware version has the following limitations:
o Only 5 message bases and file areas can be used.
o The BBS will only access one partition per data type.
o The program limits you to three batch downloads or uploads.
o A shareware notice is displayed at each "boot up."
NOTE: There may be other restrictions added since the creation
of this file.
You can run an actual BBS with the "Demo" version. You can
even create more than 5 message bases and file areas. The system
editor has no restrictions, only the actual BBS program. If you
were to create, say, 20 message bases--You could access them all
after registering your copy. You don't have to re-initialize your
BBS.
RUNNING TRANSCENDENCE
You should have received a large LZH file, containing this
file and many others. The file was compressed with folders
intact. The archiver you used to decompress it should have
created all of the folders for you. If not use LHARC v2.01k or
higher.
This "demo" version was created to work with a hard drive, on
partition 'D'. Don't worry if you can't install it on drive 'D',
there are instructions of installing it on other drives below.
After decompressing the demo, you should find a folder named
TRANSBBS in your root directory. It should also have created
other folders inside of that. The following is a list of folders:
TRANSBBS - The main BBS folder
DATA - BBS 'Data' files
TEXT - Text & menu files
MESSAGE - Message Base Data
FILES - File Area Folders & Data
MODULES - Modules (External programs)
BACKUP - Storage of backup files
TEMP - Temporary files
FMAIL - Storage of files attached to msgs/email
All you need to do is make sure that the TRANSBBS folder is
in the root directory of drive 'D' and then run the TRANSBBS.PRG
file. If you can not install the BBS program on drive 'D' go
ahead and extract the files & folders to the drive you want to
use. Next run the SYS_EDIT.PRG file. It will say lit can't find
a few files, and after the select the drop-down menu "Drives &
Paths." You will see a list of Drives, and path names. Change
the drive names to the drive you are using. After you are done
select the "DONE" box. Then exit the program, and tell it to SAVE
the TRANS.DAT file.
AFTER YOU RUN THE BBS
You will be at a menu with a few options. Select option 'A'
(Logon as User #1). This will log you, the Sysop, onto the BBS.
You will notice you have mail waiting, go ahead and read it now.
When done reading your mail select "K" to kill it. After you have
read your mail you may want to change some of the information
about yourself (I doubt your name is John Doe). To do this you
will use the built-in User-Editor. To access it press F3
(Function key #3). At the menu select "O" for online user. You
may now alter your account any way you like.
There is a whole lot to this BBS program, but due to the
large size of this archive we are not going to go into any detail
on features, etc. For more information call, or write
(Address/phone numbers are at the end of this file).
