This is the "help file" for the message system.
The functions supported are: Enter, Kill, Scan, and Read.
E: Enter: (requires access level 2 or higher - new users are level 1)
- Aborts if message table is full: you must delete messages
before you can enter any new messages;
- Requests all information (addressee, section, etc.) to fill
in the message header;
- Accepts the message text, up to 20 lines of 80 characters per
line;
- NOTE: due to the "No-wrap" terminal width feature of this
system, the end of an edited line MOST LIKELY will not correspond
to the end-of-line on a reader's terminal! To force a new line in
a message, place a period (".") in the FIRST position of an
editor input line. No-wrap can be defeated by saving a
"preformatted" message using the editor "P" command;
- Editor subcommands:
A - Abort message and return to BBS command level;
C - Continue entering lines in message;
D - Delete a given line from message;
E - Edit string in a certain line;
L - List message starting at a certain line;
P - Save message as formatted in editor;
R - Replace a line entirely;
S - Store message in No-wrap format.
- POLICY: keep it clean and legal (ie. no cursing, exchanges of
stolen programs, etc. There are plenty of other systems dedicated
to such behaviour).
K: Kill:
- Asks for message number;
- Deletes message if user is in either the "To" or "From" field;
- Updates message table.
S: Scan:
- Scans the messages starting at message number entered. Lists
only those messages you have access to.
- '*' can be used to start scanning at new messages since last
call.
R: Read:
- Allows selective or individual message reading;
- Read Subcommands:
A - Read All messages starting from given number;
I - Read individual messages (prompts for number);
F - Read messages from a certain user;
T - Read messages to a certain user;
S - Read messages in a certain message section.
- '*' can be used as a message number, representing new messages
since previous call. eg. A* will read all new messages.
Sections:
Due to the number of special interests represented on this
board, the messages can be put into any one of several sections.
If you have a favourite (computer-related) topic you would like
to see in its own section, leave a non-private message to me
(SYSOP or BOB MAXWELL) about it. If someone else likes the idea,
he/she should also send me a message (Poor man's public opinion
poll).
Any ideas, suggestions or complaints cannot be acted upon if they
aren't presented to me!
Regards, from Bob Maxwell, System Operator.
