This is the "How to" file supplied with the No Frills label making program
version 1.05 By Ron Weldin Copyright © 1993. My thanks go to the GEnie folks
for some programming help and to my lovely wife Janet and my buddy Warren
for their helpful suggestions.
Time saving features:
* Single key selection of most options.
* Automatic capitalization of the first letter (no missed shift keys).
* Searches the directory from which it was run.
* Automatically looks for .DAT files making them easier to spot.
* Will automatically add the .DAT extension for you, less typing.
* Label counter as a reminder.
* Displays the file name of a loaded address file.
* Will not allow more characters on a line than will fit on a normal label.
* Automatically puts a comma after the City (less typing).
* Allows for a one time special label larger than the normal address label.
Note: There is a guide at the top of the screen to help you stay within
the normal address label size. However if you have a large enough
label, you can enter up to 60 characters per line (here only).
No Frills is not a fancy label program. It is designed to get the job
done as quickly and painlessly as possible. Most options are selected
by a single key stroke. Although the program is Not GEM it does use
the GEM File Selector to make it easier to load that file you just forgot
the name of <smile>. You will also notice that by default it will only
display file names with a .DAT extension, this is to make those files
easier to locate. Of course if you know the name you simply type it in
and press enter to load it. Note: If you don't put a DAT extension on
the file when you save it, No Frills will do it for you. You can put
all your addresses in the same file or (what I do is) create different
files for different reasons ie. Christmas card list, Employee list etc.
When you run No Frills the program starts you off at the main menu, see
below. At the top of the menu you get a reminder of how many labels
you currently have in memory. If you have loaded an Address file the
name of the file will also be displayed. Each menu selection is numbered
and allows you to select the desired option by typing of option number.
To make things even easier you can also press the First letter in the
options name to move to that area of the program. When you see a
capital letter inside parentheses you can select that option by
pressing that letter, simple huh? This program uses Select and Enter in
it's prompts. Select means if you type the appropriate key that action
will be performed. If the prompt tells you to Enter you are required
to first type the appropriate key and then press the Return or Enter key.
Main Menu:
------------------------------
ADDRESS.DAT
30 labels in memory
[1] (C)reate or (A)dd labels
[2] (D)elete a label
[3] (E)dit labels
[4] (L)oad labels from disk
[5] (O)ne time Special label
[6] (P)rint labels
[7] (S)ave labels to disk
[8] (V)iew labels
[9] (Q)uit
Select number or letter:
-------------------------------
Key - Option:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
[1] (C)reate a label or (A)dd labels
This will take you to a screen that prompts you for the information
needed for your label. Once you have entered all the information
you will see the label as it will appear when printed and the
following prompt:
Check your label then Select
E to Edit Q to Quit or Return to Continue:
Selecting (E)dit will display the information you just entered
with each line being numbered and the following prompt:
Select line number to Edit or 0 to continue
When you are finished making corrections you press 0 and you will
see the following prompt:
Press Q to Quit or any other to continue
Now you can continue entering addresses or exit back to the menu.
Selecting (Q)uit takes you back to the main menu.
[2] (D)elete a label
When you select 2 or (D)elete the program will begin displaying
your addresses ,with a record number, a screen full at a time and
the following prompt:
Enter number to Delete or 0 to Exit
Enter the record number you want to delete or 0 to go to the next
screen full of records. This will continue until you reach the
end of your data base. You can abort this operation and go back
to the main menu by entering a number greater than the number of
available records. For example, say your data base has 50 addresses
in it, if you enter 51 or greater the program will take you back
to the main menu.
If you know the number of your record you can enter it at the
prompt even if it is not being displayed at the time. When you
enter an address label number No Frills will display the
selected record on another screen and prompt you to confirm you
have the record you wish to delete:
Delete this record [y/N]
Answer the prompt with a Y to delete it or an N if for
any reason you don't want the displayed record deleted.
If you were not at the last screen full of records the
program will then continue displaying records until you
have reached the end of your data base. At that time you
will find yourself back at the main menu.
[3] (E)dit labels
The screens for this part of the program work about the same as
when you chose menu item number 2 (D)elete, from here you can
make changes to the address. Selecting the record number from
this screen will allow you to edit any line in the address. This
is handy when someone in your data base has moved etc.
[4] (L)oad labels from disk
Selecting 4 or (L)oad will bring up the file selector to allow you to
type in or select the file to be loaded. If you have records in
memory the program will issue a WARNING that any files in Memory will
be replaced, do you want to proceed (Y/N). If you have files in memory
that you want to save select N to return to the main menu then
select (S)ave and enter a name for you file.
[5] (O)ne time special label
What I mean by "one time label" is that the program will not give
you an option to save it. The purpose for the option is to allow
for a label that is larger than normal or say you just want to put
a note on something. The one time label option allows you to enter
up to 5 lines of text or numbers or any combination of same. There
will be NO auto installed commas like the one in the regular
address label after City. After you have entered the information
you want on the label you can (E)dit it before going to the (P)rint
selection. When you tell the program you want to print your label.
You will be prompted for a number, that is how many do you want to
print. Enter the number and printing will start, if for any reason
you decide not to print just enter 0 at the how many prompt. At
this point should you decide you really want to print that one
again, never fear, you will not have to re-enter the information
as long as you have not exited the one time label option. When the
program ask do you want another label just press Y for yes. The
screen will look the same as it did when you first entered but there
is a difference :-). If you simply press enter for each line your
original label will reappear.
[6] (P)rint labels
This option allows you to select any label in memory for printing
or All. If you select All the program will print one copy of each
label in memory. If select single the labels in memory will be
displayed allowing you to choose the one you want to print and
prompt you for how many copies you want.
[7] (S)ave labels to disk
If you just entered a list of addresses or edited any addresses
loaded from file or added any new addresses to a file you loaded
you must Save them before leaving the program or you will lose
any changes you just made. Selecting 7 or (S)ave will bring up
the file selector for you to enter a name for the file. If you
select a file name that already exist the program will ask you if
you want to overwrite it. If you answer yes to overwrite the
original file will be deleted and replaced by the one in memory.
You can answer no to enter a new file name.
[8] (V)iew labels
When selecting number 8 or (V)iew the program will display a
numbered list of all records in memory a screen full at a time
until you reach the end or Quit the option.
[9] (Q)uit
When you select 9 or (Q)uit you will be asked if you are sure and
if you have saved your work. Answer the prompt with N to return
to the main menu if you forgot to save those changes or if you
just hit the Quit key by accident. Selecting Y will exit the
program and return you to the Desktop.
Well here it is, the usual disclaimers apply. No Warranty is expressed
or implied. I take no responsibility for any damaged of any kind.
Use this program at your own risk. With that being said <smile>.
This program has been tested on the following:
Computers: 1040STf, MEGA4 STE, 1040STE and TT030
TOS versions: 1,00, 1.04, 1.60, 2.06 and 3.xx
Monitors: SM147 mono, SC1224 and SC1435 color
Printers: Panasonic KX-P1124, Citizen and Star NX-1000 color.
Note: On the TT030 it requires ST resolutions and fast RAM disabled.
I hope to correct this is the near future.
You are encouraged to upload this program to other BBS's as long as it's
in it's original form and includes this file.
I would like to hear any and all comments and or suggestions but please
keep in mind this program is designed to be a work horse. Any changes
made to this program will be for improvement of performance and or ease
of use. There are plenty of commercial label programs on the market if
you want more elaborate features along with the usual "bells and whistles".
This program is NOT intended for those who want endless features. It is
strictly to print labels quickly and painlessly. Again comments and
suggestions are solicited. Also if you want to be generous and encouraging.
I will accept money <GRIN>. I can be reached at the address shown below.
Enjoy.....
