I programmed this game over summer
to see how close I could get to
writing a good game in assembly. Well,
my final year of my degree arrived, so
I have decided to give it a rest for a
while. This fully playable version
could be improved if I had the time...
I got the idea from the Commodore
64 version by IJK software which is
better, so play that if you can !!
The game is based on the 70's sci-
fi film 'Rollerball'. If you've seen
the film, you'll understand how the
game is played. If not, read on...
Imagine a circular banked track,
two goals on opposite sides of the
track, and a ball. Two teams on
roller-skates have to throw the ball
into the opposition's goal as many
times as possible in ten minutes. The
only rule is that the ball and the
players are not allowed to move
clockwise around the track. Apart from
that it is a free for all !!! In the
original film there were motorbikes...
Sorry, wait for version 2 !!!
Players can punch left or right,
and crouch down to knock over other
players, not necessarily on the other
team !!!! Crouching is also the only
way to pick up the ball.
Control is by Joystick, (2 Player
games use 2 joysticks).
The 'radar' at the top of the
screen shows the location of all 10
players so that you always know where
your nearest player is.
By 'tapping' the joystick left or
right, you can get extra acceleration
/deceleration. (Computer controlled
players don't have this feature, so
you can out-accelerate them !!!!).
There is no 'easy' or 'hard'
level setting yet when playing the
computer, I'm afraid, so novices will
get wasted !!! Don't give up, with
practise it can be easily defeated.
If you have a 'Replay' cartridge,
just select Replay sound output in
the start menu for better sample
quality.
I programmed the whole game on a
520ST upgraded to a 1040ST, but I kept
in mind the different machines, so
I hope it works OK on a 520ST. There
shouldn't be any problems, however, if
there are, I would appreciate it if
you let me know !! Maybe putting
'rocket.prg' in the AUTO folder may
cure some problems......
To conserve disk space, I used
Automation's Packer v2.3 which is the
best packer I've seen !!
You may notice the music and
graphics are not too hot. I am no
artist, and would like to find
contacts who can do a much better
job than me (which shouldn't be too
hard !!).
