Enclosed in this archive you will find 3 files: PATIENCE.PRG,
PATIENCE.RSC, and README (this file). These files are for
English speaking people and are intended to complement the
German public domain game PATIENCE (version 2.13). In other
words, I have, armed only with an Oxford German/English
dictionary and my own German heritage, edited the original
binaries by replacing German text with suitable English text.
(I have translated 100% of the menus and about 85% of the dialog
boxes.)
THE FILES PATIENCE.* ENCLOSED IN THIS ARCHIVE DO NOT CONSTITUTE
THE GAME PATIENCE. You will need to get the original game, then
switch PATIENCE.PRG and PATIENCE.RSC with the files which I have
provided. I have arranged things in this fashion out of courtesy
to Volker Weidner, it is his version of the game that people
should acquire first.
Below I have included a description of the menus which appear in
the game.
*************************** MENUS ***************************************
2.1 Menu 'Patience'
'Eiffel'
'Matriarch'
'Standard'
'Klondike'
'Gallery'
'Braid' : The current game is interrupted, the cards are
reshuffled and a new game begins.
'Demo' : This activates 'demo mode' whereby the computer
plays the game until it is interrupted (by pressing
the left mouse button or hitting a key).
This demo is not very intelligent and was not
intended to be so. Its main function is to acquaint
the player with the rules of the game (and also
serve as a demonstration of the program).
'Wait x s' : When Demo mode is activated this determines the
amount of time between the computer's moves. Thus
you can set the speed of the Demo.
'Save Game' : Allows you to save the current game to disk.
Saved games should end in '.PAT '.
'Load' : Loads a saved game. The current game is interrupted
and the newly loaded game is played.
'Quit' : Ends the current game and leaves the program.
2.2 Menu 'Information'
'Game Rules' : Loads the file "Patience.txt" and opens a window
displaying the file contents. Patience.txt contains
information about the rules of the game, the menus,
earlier versions of Patience, sending $$ to the
programmer, etc...
'Copying' : Displays information about copying Patience.
2.3 Menu 'Help'
'Show Move' : Shows 'all' possible (legal) moves. (Get all the
moves by repeated selection of this menu option.)
(Here 'moves' does not include dealing out more cards.)
'Remove' : Moves cards to the foundation, subject to the rules
of the game. Only possible in the games 'Standard',
'Klondike', 'Gallery' and 'Braid'. Hitting any key
or clicking on the left mouse button interrupts the
process.
'Undo Move' : The last move is taken back.
'Restart' : The game returns to the start setup. Hitting any key
or clicking on the left mouse button interrupts the
process.
'Mark' : Places a mark at the current set up of the current
game.
'Goto Mark' : Returns the current game to the last marked setup.
Hitting any key or clicking on the left mouse button
interrupts the process.
'Cheating' : Suspends the rules of the game. Allows you to set up
situations and to cheat. The program keeps track
of the number of times you cheated and informs you
of this at the end of the game.
2.4 Menu 'Cards'
'Deal' : Overturns the next card or deals the next set of cards
depending on the game.
'xx Cards Left' Shows how many cards remain.
**********************************************************************
I have not translated the rules of the game(s); the Demo
program is informative enough that you can deduce the rules through
close observation.
Since Volker Weidner has asked that satisfied Patience players
show their appreciation with $$ (or DM DM), I have translated the
part of his PATIENCE.TXT file which lists his mailing addresses.
Please note, he has some type of support for his games available.
(Be it a source code, a version upgrade, I don't know.) The details
are listed in PATIENCE.TXT in 3.1.
