================================
Display Queue of GE Mail Letters
================================
Display information about each unread letter in your GE Mail mailbox!
Information including the address of the sender, the date the letter was sent
and the "subject" of the letter will be displayed on your screen.
============
Read GE Mail
============
Read all the new letters waiting in your GE Mail mailbox! Be sure you have your
printer on or a disk capture file open so you can review your mail offline. You
don't have to worry about missing important mail, either. GEnie saves your mail
for up to 30 days after it was sent, so if you can't logon for a few days, your
mail will still be waiting. Letters you have already read will also remain in
your mailbox for up to 5 days after you read them!
===============================
Read Letters From Specific User
===============================
GE Mail allows you to read your electronic mail from a specific user. By just
entering their GE Mail address, letters from that user will be displayed to
you.
===============================
Read Letters From Specific Date
===============================
GE Mail will also allow you to list your mail by entering a specific date. All
you need to do is enter the date in YYMMDD format and the letters sent on that
date will be there for you to read.
=============================
Compose & Send GE Mail Online
=============================
Send letters to other GEnie users! Select this option and be prompted for the
"TO:" address (make sure the recipient's GE Mail address before you start), a
"Carbon Copy:" (send a carbon copy to yourself as a "file copy" if you wish)
and "Subject:". The system will then prompt for the first line of text with
"1>".
Just begin typing your letter at the "1>" prompt. Make sure to press <RETURN>
at the end of every line and wait for the next line-number prompt before
continuing. And don't worry if you notice a mistake after you move on to the
next line ... there are editing commands available, too.
You can use the following editing commands at line-number prompts in GE Mail
enter mode (note - the command MUST be the first entry on a line):
*ACC,addr - Adds addresses "addr" to the
Carbon Copy: list.
*ATO,addr - Adds addresses "addr" to the
TO: list.
*CC,addr - Replaces addresses in the Carbon
Copy: list with "addr".
*COPY,nnnnnnn - Copies an existing letter into
the current letter.
*DELETE,n - Deletes line n from the current
letter.
*HELP - Prints commands available in
ENTER mode.
*INSERT,n - Inserts new line of text after
line "n". Insert mode continues
until <RETURN> is pressed on a
blank line.
*LIST - Lists the current entered letter.
*LOCATE - Editing command to locate text
in the current letter.
*MODIFY - Changes text in the current
message. Can change text on a
specific line, perform global
changes, etc. The format for
the *MODIFY command is:
*M,#/s1/s2/*
- where -
# - (optional) specifies the line
number to be changed.
s1 - is the "string" of text to be
changed.
s2 - is the new "string" of text.
* - (optional) indicates to change
s1 to s2 globally.
*NEXT - Sends the letter to addressees
and prompts with another TO:
prompt.
*n,text - Replaces line n in the current
letter with text.
*PASS - Provides extra security protection
to the current letter.
*RESEQUENCE - Resequences the line numbers in
the current text.
*SEND - Sends the current letter to addressees
and returns user to the previous
command level.
*SUB,desc - Replaces the Subject: of the letter
with "desc".
*TO,addr - Replaces the addresses in the TO:
list with "addr".
*UPLOAD - Accepts ASCII (X-on/X-off) upload
from your disk. Make sure your
telecommunications software will
expand blank lines or that you have
put a <SPACE> before each <RETURN>
on each blank line.
*X - Erases the text of current letter and
returns to previous command level.
====================
Upload a Text Letter
====================
Create a letter offline using your personal computer and the word processing
software you're familiar with! Then, upload the finished letter and send it to
other GEnie subscribers. Keep the following tips in mind to make the process go
more smoothly.
When creating the letter in your word processor, make sure NOT to use any
special formatting characters (like TABS or 'curled quotes'). Put a <SPACE>
before the <RETURN> on every blank line (GE Mail will ignore a <RETURN> by
itself on a line in text upload mode). Do NOT allow an asterisk "*" to be the
first character on any line (GE Mail will interpret the asterisk as an editing
command an will reject that line of text).
When you save the letter in your word processor, make sure you save it as TEXT
ONLY. The format of most word processor documents is not compatible with GE
Mail.
Once the letter is ready to send, log on to GEnie and select "Upload a Text
Letter" from the menu. You'll be prompted for TO:, Carbon Copy: and Subject:,
just the same as with a letter created online. Then, instead of a line number
prompt, you'll see "READY FOR INPUT". When you receive the "READY FOR INPUT"
message, instruct your telecommunications software to perform an ASCII upload
(this could appear in your software as "send a text file" or "X-on/X-off" as
well).
When the file transmission is complete, press your <BREAK> key (you set this up
the first time you logged on to GEnie). After a few seconds you'll receive a
line number prompt. At this point you can *LIST the letter to confirm that the
upload was successful or *SEND it.
========================
Search GE Mail Directory
========================
Don't know someone's GE Mail address? Don't panic! You can use Search GE Mail
Directory to find the GE Mail address of any GEnie subscriber.
Select this option and you'll be prompted to "Enter Last Name". If you're not
sure of the exact spelling, you can also enter a fragment of the name (e.g.,
"William" would find "Williams", "Williamsen" and "Williamson"). Next, you'll
be prompted to enter "First Name" or "<RETURN> for all".
The system searches the GE Mail address database and a list of names and
addresses will be displayed on your screen. If your search finds more than 20
possible matches, you'll receive a message showing the number of matches and
you will be given the option of "refining" your search using First Name,
State/Province or Country. If the search was too broad, you'll be prompted to
start over again.
====================
GE Mail Command Mode
====================
GE Mail Command Mode is a powerful tool for the more advanced subscriber. This
is where you can review letters which you've already read (they're no longer
flagged as "new") but are still less than 5 days old, display letters using
several different options (for example, letters FROM a specific user or FROM
you; letters sent on, before or after a specified date; etc.), upload a batch
of letters which you prepared offline all in one text file and forward letters
to other people.
For a complete list of the capabilities of GE Mail Command Mode, please type
HELP at the "Command?" prompt in GE Mail Command Mode or consult your GEnie
User Guide.
==============
Attached Files
==============
Attached Files allows you to send and receive binary files via electronic mail.
You can send spreadsheets, scripts, or text files to any GEnie user, using an
error-checking protocol.
Use the Send (Upload) Attached Files to transmit a file using XMODEM, use the
Receive (Download) Attached Files to receive a file using XMODEM, YMODEM, or
ZMODEM. The Receive Attached Files option allows for batch downloads and can
download up to 16 files during one session.
You will receive a normal GE Mail message that will tell you that you have an
attached file waiting, if a user has sent you one.
Attached Files is an easy, fast way to send data (of any sort) to another GEnie
user.
