VDE15.UPD
---------
E. Meyer - 12/89
This is a quick guide, for users of earlier versions of VDE, to noticable
changes in operation of VDE since version 1.4. Please check VDE.DOC and
VINST.DOC for full details.
VDE:
1. The File manager (^KF) menu now lets you select files to load, read,
or delete, and view or remove directories. Furthermore, it can be called up
from any filename prompt (^KL,^KR, etc) by typing a directory/filename with
wildcards, or pressing [Ret] alone for *.*. (Special case: to load an
untitled file, press ^J instead of [Ret].) See FILES.
2. The Window (^OW) command now lets you jump back and forth between
two positions in one file with AltF, and scroll windows jointly with
^[PgUp,Dn], just as AltW allows for 2 files. See WINDOWS.
3. You can now edit 8 files, rather than 6. Also, the AltL command will
now accept a list of filenames, just as on the command line. You can no
longer load two files with the same name and directory.
The AltB and AltW commands, if used when there is no second file, will
now prompt for one, then use it. (AltN already did this.) The AltQ command
will now prompt (just once) to confirm (Y/N) before quitting if any of the
files being edited have been modified. See MULTIPLE FILES.
4. A new Autosave command (^KA) lets you specify an interval to save your
work automatically to disk. See AUTOSAVE.
5. There is a new printer toggle ^PX, for strikeout. (It requires no
installation.) Also, underline (^PS) will now work by overstriking with "_"
if no codes have been installed for it in VINSTALL. See PRINTER CODES.
Also, the ^OJ command now engages proportional mode on the printer.
6. The TAB commands Esc-Tab, Shft-Tab have been revised for consistency
with other PC software. See TABS.
VINSTALL:
1. There are new items: in the IBM INSTALLATION, to specify the cursor
type while editing; in USER OPTIONS, to specify the default autosave interval;
in the PRINTER INSTALLATION, to install codes for proportional printing if ^OJ
is engaged.
*. NOTE: I had intended to add more printers to the installation menu,
but I have not received any information! If you use VDE with an Okidata,
Toshiba, laser, or any other printer that you have to install yourself, please
consider sending me the information on codes for underline, bold, etc. This
will help out other users. Drop me a postcard, or Email your .VDP file to my
CompuServe ID, [74415,1305].
MINOR ENHANCEMENTS:
1. A list of files to edit may be separated with commas or semicolons,
depending on whether you want the previous directory to carry over to the next
item. Also, in order to load a key file you must now use a "+" sign, rather
than a semicolon. See SYNTAX.
2. There are new Print (^KP) options "O" and "E", to print only Odd or
Even pages, and "C", for page number centered at bottom of page. Also, the
header ("...") no longer includes a page number unless you specify "N" also.
See PRINTING.
3. The Find/Replace (^QF/A) commands now use "^_" rather than "_", as a
wildcard; and strings may now begin with wildcards. Furthermore, strings can
now contain graphics characters (entered with AltG). See FIND/REPLACE.
4. The Graphics (AltG) menu no longer allows clearing or RE-defining
entries; also, if graphics overflow occurs while reading from disk, the
filename is cleared to "untitled". See GRAPHICS.
5. When printing a file, underlining (^PS) is suppressed for any left
margin, so that those spaces are not underlined when an underlined phrase is
continued onto another line.
6. VDE now recognizes text as WordStar or ASCII while reading from the
disk, so that even if you have not specified the mode option (/A,W,5), the
text should be read in correctly.
7. Memory is now allocated dynamically according to need. This allows
more efficient use of RAM when editing small to moderate files. There is no
longer an AltK command to change memory allocation manually. See MEMORY.
Also, VDE now uses less memory itself; you can edit a single file in as
little as 90 to 140k RAM.
8. VDE is now DesqView aware. See DESQVIEW.
