  20. Welcome  to  The  STATISTICIAN  program,  a GEM based program/accessory
  21. which reports on the status of your ST/MEGA ST computer system and disk
  22. drives. The STATISTICIAN has "functionality-duality". The same file may
  23. be used as either a program  or desk  accessory by  simply changing the
  24. name of the file extender to PRG or ACC.

  26. The STATISTICIAN  supports both  HIGH and  MEDIUM resolution of the ST.
  27. This  file   provides  instructions   for  installing   and  using  the
  28. STATISTICIAN program. We hope you enjoy the program and find it useful.

  32. GETTING STARTED
  33. ===============

  35. The following files are included in the STATS.ARC package:
  36.  
  37.      STATS.PRG:     Version 1.00 of the  STATISTICIAN program.   To run
  38.                     as a program, simply double click this file. To run
  39.                     as a desk accessory, just change  the file extender
  40.                     to ACC  (STATS.ACC) and  copy the  file to the root
  41.                     directory of your boot disk.  The accessory will be
  42.                     loaded at  boot-time and appear under the DESK drop
  43.                     down  menu.    If  you  own  a  program  which  can
  44.                     independently  install  desk accessories, it should
  45.                     work fine with STATISTICIAN, the accessory.

  50. FEATURES

  53. When the STATISTICIAN is  executed, it  displays a  form which provides
  54. the following information on your ST computer system:
  55.  
  56. o    TOS Version Number
  57. o    TOS System Build Date
  58. o    GEMDOS Version Number
  59. o    Status Of Capslock Key
  60. o    Blitter Chip Status
  61. o    System Time (12 hour format)
  62. o    System Date (month/day/year format)
  63. o    Floppy Disk Write Verify Status
  64. o    Floppy Disk Seek Rate
  65. o    Disk Drives Attached To Your System
  66. o    Graphical Map of TPA (Transient Program Area) Memory Allocation
  67. o    Graphical Map of Total Memory Allocation
  68. o    Total RAM detected
  69. o    Amount Of Free RAM (including % of total)
  70. o    Amount of Used TPA (including % of total)
  71. o    Amount Of System Memory (including % of total)
  72. o    Amount of Screen Memory (including % of total)

  74. You may  also obtain additional information on the disk drives attached
  75. to the system by clicking on the appropriate disk drive button.

  78. VERSIONS

  81. The STATISTICIAN displays both  TOS  and  GEMDOS  version  numbers. The
  82. System Build Date is also displayed. You cannot modify these dates.

  85. STATUS INDICATORS
  86. =================

  88. When the  STATISTICIAN is executed, it reads the status of the Capslock
  89. key and blitter chip.  If the  Capslock key  is ON  the Capslock button
  90. will  be  highlighted  (dark  background,  white letters). The Capslock
  91. status indicator is interactive. You  can  toggle  the  Capslock status
  92. ON/OFF by clicking on the Capslock button.
  93.  
  94. If your  system has a blitter chip installed the Blitter button will be
  95. highlighted. This is a display only indicator, you cannot change it.

  98. TIME AND DATE
  99. =============
  100.  
  101. The STATISTICIAN displays the  system time  and date  at the  point you
  102. execute the program. In this way the STATISTICIAN functions much like a
  103. Control Panel, that is the time and date are not  continuously updated,
  104. but  remain  static.  Whenever  the  main screen of the STATISTICIAN is
  105. redrawn however, the time and date are updated to current values.

  107. The Time is specified in a 12 hour AM/PM format. You can set the system
  108. time and/or  date by clicking on the SET TIME or SET DATE buttons. Both
  109. of these buttons activate the same dialog. Enter the new  time and date
  110. and click  on the  SET button. The time is entered in a 12 hour format.
  111. Click on the AM/PM designator to toggle between  AM or  PM. Clicking on
  112. the RESET button displays the current system time and date. Clicking on
  113. the CANCEL button leaves the dialog  without affecting  the system time
  114. and date. Notice, however, that as you exit the dialog, the system time
  115. and date displayed on the main screen are updated to current values.

  118. FLOPPY DRIVE PARAMETERS
  119. =======================

  121. The STATISTICIAN displays the status of the floppy  read/write flag and
  122. the drive  seek rate.  If Write  Verify is ON, all writes to the floppy
  123. drives are read-verified. If OFF,  no  write-verifies  take  place. The
  124. seek rate  for the  floppy drives is displayed as either 2, 3, 6, or 12
  125. milliseconds. These status  indicators  are  display  only.  You cannot
  126. change the values.

  129. DISK DRIVE INFO
  130. ===============

  132. Information  about  disk  drives  can  be  obtained  by clicking on the
  133. appropriate disk drive letter shown on the STATISTICIAN's  main screen.
  134. The ST's  operating system  can recognize a total of 16 drives (denoted
  135. as A-P). Drives A and B are floppy drives, while  the remainder  may be
  136. hard  drives  or  RAM  drives.  Any  drive that is not attached to your
  137. system will be shown as disabled.

  139. To obtain specific information about a  drive attached  to your system,
  140. click on the crive button. An information dialog will be displayed with
  141. the following data:
  142.  
  143. o    Drive Designator (A:, C:, etc.)
  144. o    Volume Label  (if one exists)
  145. o    Sector Size (in bytes)
  146. o    Cluster Size (in bytes)
  147. o    Size Of Root Directory (in sectors)
  148. o    Size Of File Allocation Table (in sectors)
  149. o    Total Number Of Data Clusters
  150. o    Amount Of Free Space On Drive

  152. To return to the main screen click on the EXIT button, or  simply press
  153. the Return Key.

  156. MEMORY MAPS
  157. ===========
  158.  
  159. The STATISTICIAN  displays two  graphic memory maps for your ST system.
  160. Each map is illustrated as a pie chart and depicts  specific allocation
  161. of memory.  The ST  system's memory  is allocated  to the TOS operating
  162. system, screen display, application programs and free memory.
  163.  
  164. The first chart shows  the allocation  of Transient  Program Area (TPA)
  165. memory.  The memory is split between that used for application programs
  166. (Used TPA) and Free RAM.  The second chart shows the allocation  of all
  167. memory. The  memory is divided between that required for storage of the
  168. screen image, TOS operating system, application programs, and free RAM.
  169.  
  170. You  can  click  on  a  pie  chart  for  information  pertinent  to the
  171. particular  type  of  allocation.  This  information  is displayed in a
  172. separate dialog box. To  leave the  info dialog  box and  return to the
  173. main screen click on the EXIT button or press the Return Key.

  175. A detailed  description of  the amount  of memory in the above areas is
  176. displayed below the pie charts. Each area of  allocation is  shown as a
  177. percent of the total RAM.

  180. ABOUT THE STATISTICIAN

  183. Clicking the  INFO button  on the main screen will display some general
  184. information about The STATISTICIAN  program and  Structured Technology,
  185. including program  version number  and our  address. To  leave the info
  186. dialog box and return to the main screen  click on  the EXIT  button or
  187. press the Return Key.

  189. The STATISTICIAN was programmed in C using LASERC from Megamax, Inc.

  195. Helpful inforamtion  about the STATISTICIAN is available by clicking on
  196. the HELP button located on the  main screen.  To exit  the HELP dialog,
  197. click on the EXIT button or simply press the Return Key.
