ST Desktop Color Restorer
Version 1.6
by Juan Rodriguez
What is the ST Desktop Color Restorer?
--------------------------------------
The ST Desktop Color Restorer is a public domain program that installs
itself as a memory resident utility and lies dormant until called. The
purpose of this program is to restore the original settings of
on-screen colors from the DESKTOP.INF file of the boot disk directory.
I wrote this program because I was tired of constantly having to move
my mouse to click on the control panel accessory to restore my desktop
colors every time a non-considerate program failed to do so.
Programmers, please take a little time and code to save the default
palette of the user so it can be restored when your program is
finished. It will save a lot of hair pulling and prevent people like
me from writing programs like this one.
Some notes about the program
----------------------------
Two caveats about this program:
1) This program is not reset proof. So, if you hit the reset button
its bye-bye program. I may include reset proofing in a future
release.
2) This program will not work with programs which use non-conventional
or custom vertical blank processes. Then again, what use would you
have for this program while playing Time Bandits?
Enough! Can I run it now?
--------------------------
Sure! You can install this program in two ways: You may place
STDCRS.PRG in the AUTO folder and it will load automatically at boot
time (works great on a hard drive), or you can double click on the
STDCRS.PRG icon to install it from the desktop.
Once the program is running, it will let you know that everything is OK
(or not) by displaying some esoteric messages. You MUST have a
DESKTOP.INF file on the root directory of the disk from which you
booted the Color Restorer. The desktop colors are taken from this file
for later restoration (when needed).
How do I restore the colors?
----------------------------
To restore the desktop colors, press and hold both SHIFT keys down for
a second and release them. You should notice the original colors back
on your desktop.
Remember that the colors restored are those taken from the DESKTOP.INF
file, and not those which you may have changed after boot-up by using
the control panel or other accessory.
Program Information
-------------------
The ST Desktop Color Restorer was written in 68000 assembler language
using Atari's MadMac Macro Assembler.
