The In-Touch Personal Information
Manager (PIM) is a forms based
database management system which:
- uses a hierarchical, menu based
user interface, specified by text
based menu specification files,
- allows record search, retrieval
and data entry via text based
form specification files,
- saves data in a data file
associated with the form,
- displays field, form, menu
sensitive help and,
- implements simple field edit
checking.
PIM consists of three modes of
operation, or 'Function' Managers:
- Menu Manager
- Form Manager
- Services Manager
The PIM Menu Manager offers a
hierarchical, menu based user
interface. Each menu item may call
a subsequent menu or a form. PIM
starts with the Menu Manager in
control displaying the Main Menu.
The PIM Form Manager allows data
entry, record search, storage and
retrieval. The Form Manager is
accessed when a form item is
selected from a Menu. A Look-Up
Window is used to locate existing
records that are to be viewed,
changed or deleted. A Look-up
Window may also be used on selected
fields to access reference data to
be inserted into one or more fields
of the active form. Only one active
form and one active data set are
allowed at any one time.
The PIM Services Manager provides
access to a fixed set of functions
accessed at any time by the user
from either the Menu Manager or Form
Manager.
<F2> accesses the Help Facility to
display a context sensitive help
description based on the current
cursor position. Pressing <F2> a
second time displays general help
for either the Menu Manager or the
Form Manager.
The data files can be set as
read-only so they can only be
updated by PIM. In addition, any
new or changed records can be logged
so as to maintain an audit trail.
