Turbo2 - Data-compression Module for LiNK
-----------------------------------------
(c) Andy Inman
******************************************************************************
Update: 7th May 1990
Sorry! It looks like Turbo2 has a bug! Its not dangerous, but inconvenient!!
The bug is quite rare, and appears to hit entirely randomly. When it does
all characters become garbage. The work around is to disable LiNK and
re-enable it (ie Shift-Shift twice).
I'm currently working on Turbo3, which offers better perfomance than Turbo2
(Turbo2 only really works well on 'pure' text). In the meantime, Turbo2 is
still worth using - the bug doesn't come up very often!
*******************************************************************************
Turbo2 (current version 1.5), works with ST-LiNK (version 3.10 or above).
Turbo2 performs real-time data-compression of transmitted / received data.
The effectiveness of compression dpends on the type of data - The figures
below are typical at 2400 baud.
Type of Data Effective Throughput. % Increase
------------ --------------------- ----------
'Pure' text 420 cps 175%
'Mixed' text (alpha and numerics etc.) 380 cps 160%
BBS 'menus' (lots of spaces etc.) 400-500 cps 170-210%
Non-ARCed binary files ** 230-260 cps 95-110%
ARCed binary files 230 cps 95%
** Binary files containing much text, or repeated characters (e.g. graphics
files) will be considerably faster.
Installation / Use
------------------
Both LiNK and Turbo2 should preferably be run from \AUTO, although will
usually work ok if run from the desktop. Run Turbo2 IMMEDIATEY after
LiNK - You should get a 'bell' when Turbo2 installs.
Enable LiNK in the usual way - If the host system also has Turbo2 installed
you will get 'LiNK Level 2' reported, if not, you'll get 'Level 0' (no
compression).
