He advises how to clear a swamp that has an outlet to the sea: "Shut the mouth of the swamp through which it flows into the sea, and the turbid river, which enters the swamp, finding but little motion in the said swamp, will deposit the carried matter onto its bottom. And so before long it will have filled the greater part of it in such a way that as the floodgate that was made close to the sea is opened, the water will leave and expose the bottom to the air, and once this is somewhat dry, we can have the river, which used to empty into the swamp, be put into a channel."
