(76.2 x 53.3 cm) Paris, Louvre This most famous of paintings, apparently still in Leonardo's possession at the time of his death, followed the artist from Florence to Milan, Rome, and probably France. Although the woman's identity was long debated, new evidence has led scholars to believe that she is almost certainly Mona Lisa, wife of the Florentine banker Francesco del Giocondo. The painting's complex psychology and originality, however, have never been in question. Leonardo shows his subject seated high above a receding vista, an unusual spatial relationship for the time. Even more inventive is Leonardo's evocation of a profound liaison between subject and observer.
