OCR: Portrait of a Lady ("La Belle Ferronière") ca. 1495, oil on wood 243/4 x 17 3/4 in. (62.9 x 45.1 cm) Paris, Louvre Both the authorship of this portrait and the identity of its sitter, known with certainty only as a woman associated with the Milanese court of Ludovico Sforza, have been debated by Leonardo scholars. Bernard Berenson, writing in 1907, plaintively observed that "one would regret to have to accept this as Leonardo's own work." Objections range from the stiffly drawn hair to the uninspired angle and lighting of the head. Others see this static image as representing a subordination of Leonardo's talents to the conventions of court portraiture.
