It remained in the collection of the earl's family until its purchase in 1980 by Armand Hammer, who brought it to the United States. In 1994 it was purchased by William Gates III; it remains the only Leonardo manuscript in an American collection. Compiled from about 1508 to 1513, the 36 folios are chiefly concerned with water and its Codex Leicester dynamics, a topic that fascinated Leonardo throughout his 11 3/4 x 17 1/4 in. (29.9 x 42.6 cm) life. Among other subjects Leonardo addresses here are light Seattle, Collection of William Gates III and vision, mechanics, hydraulics, and architecture.
