(15.2 x 14.3 cm) Windsor, Royal Library 12336 Leonardo's lifelong study of the anatomy and motion of horses dates from his years as a member of Verrocchio's Florentine workshop, when he most likely participated in the production of the master's enormous bronze statue of Bartolommeo Colleoni (1481-88). This particular drawing is identified with Leonardo's preliminary studies -172 ... for The Battle of Anghiari, a great wall painting commissioned for the Grand Council chambers of Florence's Palazzo Vecchio, in which mounted warriors drive their steeds into ferocious battle.
