OCR: A Cannon Foundry ca. 1487, pen and ink 97/e x 7 1/4 in. (25.1 x 18.4 cm) Windsor, Royal Library 12647 At the time that he made this drawing, Leonardo was consumed with his plans to cast a bronze horse and rider in honor of Francesco Sforza, the father of his Milanese patron. Scouting for techniques that might assist him, Leonardo frequented the forges and foundries of Milan. Ironically, the bronze that had been reserved for the Sforza monument was recalled and made into cannon, and the monument was never cast. This drawing is set in a foundry courtyard where cannonballs and gun barrels were stored. In the center, teams of men struggle to hoist an enormous cannon onto a carriage by means of a crane, winches, and levers.
