Pietro Paolo Crevenna, f. 8316 By one means or another, Leonardo's friend and assistant of nearly 30 years, Gian Giacomo Caprotti, known as "Salai," appears to have come into possession of most or all of the paintings the master had with him in France at the time of his death. Salai himself died of gunshot wounds in 1524. An inventory of Salai's estate, drawn up so that his effects could be divided between his two quarrelsome sisters, includes a list of the paintings he owned-some by Leonardo and some by Salai.
