Los Alamos National Laboratory
Software and Visualization Sampler
CD ROM
This CD ROM, from Los Alamos National Lab., contains a potpourri of examples
of scientific visualizations, image manipulation software, and a multimedia
publication system. The CD ROM can be read by any computer that accepts ISO
9660 format. Images on the CD ROM, which are stored in LZW-compressed, 24
bit/pixel TIFF format, can be read and displayed on any platform, using
appropriate software. Programs on the CD ROM, however, can only be run on
Macintosh, NeXT, and Sun platforms.
Images on the CD ROM represent visualizations of simulations of climate and
ocean modeling, turbulent flow, material fracture, and molecular dynamics.
Some images are "movies" i.e., temporally ordered sequences of visualizations.
Notable among these is a simulation of the long term climatological effects of
the Iraq-initiated Kuwait oil well fires. All images are accompanied by descriptive text and appropriate attributions.
Programs and libraries on the CD ROM include a still image and movie sequence
viewer for the Macintosh, a wavelet-based image compression and decompression
program, which can run on a Sun and other platforms, and the source to the
SLATEC Common Mathematical Library. The latter is a comprehensive set of portable, non-proprietary mathematical routines.
Also included on the CD ROM is MediaView, a general, digital multimedia
publishing system for the NeXT computer. MediaView has been used to prepare a
wide variety of documents in many disciplines, several of which are included on the disk.
A quick note regarding the translation to the ISO 9660 standard. An effort
was made to keep the data portion of this disc strictly ISO 9660 compliant.
Because of the level 1 restriction of file name length, however, certain file
names in the source trees of this disc had to be modified. For this reason,
translation table files are provided to make the copying of files easier.
These translation files (named "YMTRANS.TBL") are in every directory and
are ASCII readable. In the YM_UTILS directory, there exists software in
source form that can copy the files off the CD-ROM and onto a hard disk
directory into it's original file name before ISO 9660 name translation
was done. Instructions on use and compilation also exists in the
YM_UTILS directory. In general, these programs will not be needed. They
should only be necessary if the reader wishes to look at files in the source
trees in their original form.
For additional information on images and programs, contact the person
acknowledged in the corresponding *.TXT file.
All images and software are copyrighted by the University of California,
1992.
