This GlobalFax 2.08 software will not work with any ADB TelePort fax/modem (TelePort/Bronze™, TelePort/FullFax™, or the original TelePort™ fax/modem). The installer will delete the ADB control panel and replace it with an incompatible version, preventing you from using your modem.
This document provides additional information about TelePort/Gold, TelePort/Silver, and TelePort/Bronze II fax/modems that we were not able to include in your User’s Guide.

The first time you install your GlobalFax software, the following personalization screen appears.
Enter your name, your company’s name (optional), and the serial number of the modem in the text boxes. The serial number is located on the back of the fax/modem and is composed of six numbers, which may be preceeded by a letter.
NOTE: You must include your name and serial number in this dialog box to continue installation.
THUNDER STORMS
Electrical surges due to lightning strikes can travel through power cables and phone lines. Users living in areas subject to frequent thunder and lightning storms should take one of the following precautions to protect their Macintosh and TelePort during such storms:
a) Unplug both the TelePort power cable AND phone cable
OR
b) Run power cables through a power surge protector and phone lines through a phone line surge protector
FAX CENTER
Page Rotation Icons
The four page rotation icons shown below appear while you are viewing a fax document in Fax Center. To rotate the page to a specific orientation, click the appropriate icon.
GlobalFax OCR Icon
GlobalFax OCR is a GlobalFax software extension that you can use to extract text from faxes you receive. You can then edit the text using any application that has word-processing capabilities. Contact Global Village for more information about GlobalFax OCR. The GlobalFax OCR icon shown below appears when you view a fax document in Fax Center.
Received Folder Icons
The small icon in front of a received fax name provide information about that fax. The following picture displays the different icons that can appear.
To force all documents in the Received folder to be marked as “unprinted”:
1. Make sure the Fax Center is open.
2. Deselect the Received folder (i.e., select the Scheduled folder or the Log).
3. Hold down the Option key and click on the Received folder.
A dialog box appears in which you can confirm that you want to mark all received documents as “unprinted.”
4. Click OK to confirm you choice.
Faster Fax Viewing
Anti-aliasing occurs automatically when you display a fax document, improving the image of a fax by making individual pixels between light areas and dark areas a gray color. Only users with color or grayscale monitors that are set to 4 or more colors or grayscales can see this feature.
Contrast Control
Contrast control is a new feature in FaxCenter 2.08. Using contrast control, you can adjust the contrast level of a fax document to make the contents more visible. This feature is available to users who have black and white, grayscale, or color monitors.
To change the contrast of a fax document:
1. Display a sent or received fax.
2. Press the up arrow key on your keyboard to make the fax document lighter.
or
Press the down arrow key on your keyboard to make the fax document darker.
Continue pressing the key until the quality of the fax is to your satisfaction.
Contrast control is much more effective on faxes that are sent in fine mode and/or originally had gray in them. Contrast control only effects the fax you are viewing on the screen and does not effect the appearance of the fax when it is printed or is saved in a graphical format (such as MacPaint or PICT).
To save the contents of a fax document after changing the contrast:
1. Place the crosshair cursor in the upper-left corner of the fax document.
2. Click down and drag the cursor until the box encloses the region that you want to save or print.
3. Choose Copy from the Edit menu.
4. Open any graphics application or TeachText version 7.0 or later and choose Paste from the Edit menu.
You can now print or save the selection using the graphics application or TeachText.
Save As Menu Command
• You can use the Save As command in the FaxCenter menu to save the contents of any text window (Fax Log list, Schedule list, and Received list) as a text file.
• While viewing a fax file, you can use the Save As command to convert the entire fax file, or just the page you are viewing, to a different file format. The file formats available are: MacPaint (72 DPI), PICT (72 DPI), PICT (200 DPI), PICT2 (72 DPI), PICT2 (200 DPI), and TIFF (200 DPI).
• Because MacPaint pages have a fixed length, the bottom portion of long faxes saved in MacPaint format will be cut off. All other file formats support variable length pages.
• Machines without Color QuickDraw support (Macintosh SE, Macintosh Classic, and PowerBook 100) cannot create PICT2 format files. If you try to save a fax file in the PICT2 format on these machines, the PICT format will be used instead. No warning is given for this substitution.
TELEPORT SERIAL CONTROL PANEL
Fax Speed Indication
• When you send a fax document, a status bar appears in the menu bar indicating the speed of transmission for each page.
• When you receive a fax document, a status bar appears in the menu bar indicating the speed of reception for each page.
• When you the view the Fax Log or a fax receipt, the speed that a document was sent or received appears for each entry.
APPLETALK REMOTE ACCESS™ (ARA)
• You can now fax while the ARA Answer Calls is selected. The TelePort Serial control panel will borrow the fax/modem from ARA and transmit your fax document. Once the transmission is completed, the TelePort Serial control panel will return control of the fax/modem to ARA.
• Make sure the proper ARA script is selected from the ARA pop-up menu. If you are using TelePort Silver or TelePort Gold from your Macintosh use the “GV TelePort Serial-High Speed” script; if using the Silver or Gold from your LanRover, use the “GV TelePort Serial-LanRover/L” script. If you are using a TelePort Bronze II, use the “GV Teleport/Bronze II” script.
Modem Settings
• A Show Status check box has been added to the TelePort Serial control panel. If you select this option, the modem status display appears whenever the TelePort fax/modem’s serial port is opened for data modem use. If you deselect this option, the modem status display does not appear when the TelePort fax/modem’s serial port is opened for data modem use. The Show Status check box does not affect the fax status display; the fax status display always appears when you send or receive a fax.
• If you open the TelePort Serial control panel while the TelePort fax/modem serial port is open, the Error Correction & Data Compression and Speaker Volume controls are disabled.
FAX PREFERENCES
Sending and receiving faxes at 14,400 bps is a very intensive process that overwhelms the capabilities of lower-performance Macintosh computers, such as the Macintosh Plus, Macintosh SE, Macintosh Classic, and PowerBook 100. Users of these Macintosh computers should limit their fax transmission and reception speeds to 9,600 bps by deselecting the Enable 14.4K bps Fax Send option located at the bottom of the Send Fax Preferences window.
The Enable 14.4K bps Fax Send check box appears only if you are using a TelePort/Gold fax/modem. When you select this option, the TelePort/Gold fax/modem attempts to negotiate a 14,400 bps fax connection with all fax machines it calls. If you do not select this option, the TelePort/Gold fax/modem attempts to negotiate a 9,600 bps fax connection. If you use the TelePort/Gold fax/modem with a 68000-based Macintosh, deselecting the Enable 14.4K bps Fax Send option also limits fax-reception speed to 9,600 bps.
MODEM STATUS DISPLAY
When you open the TelePort Serial control panel, the serial port is opened. While the serial port is open, you cannot send or receive faxes or operate telecommunications software; make sure that you close the TelePort Serial control panel as soon as you are finished making changes. Also, regardless of the setting of the Show Status check box (refer to previous section), the modem status display does NOT appear in in the menu bar. If you ever experience problems opening the serial port for fax or data modem use, make sure the TelePort Serial control panel is closed.
AT COMMAND SET (for TelePort/Gold and TelePort/Silver fax/modems only)
Use the AT&F1 command, rather than AT&F, to initialize the TelePort fax/modem for high-speed modem use (9,600 bps or greater). The following modem parameters are set:
\J0 Port rate adjust disabled; the serial port rate is independent of the modem connect rate
\N3 V.42 auto-reliable mode selected (i.e., allow fallback to MNP)
\Q3 Bidirectional hardware flow control enabled
INTERNATIONAL DIALING
All dial strings used within GlobalFax software (for registration and faxing) set the “time to wait for carrier” (S7 register) to 80 seconds to accommodate the long connection times associated with international calls. The “lost carrier hang-up delay” (S10 register) is also set to the maximum of 100 tenths of a second (10 seconds). When dialing internationally from other telecommunications applications, you should include “S7=60” and “S10=100” in your modem dial string to ensure that the modem will not time out while waiting for a carrier.
ZTERM (for TelePort/Gold and TelePort/Silver fax/modems only)
If you launch ZTerm by double-clicking on the ZTerm document named ”High Speed,” settings appropriate for high-speed modem communications (9,600 bps or greater) will be in place. The settings affected are the following:
ZTerm: 19,200 bps serial port rate, hardware handshaking enabled
Modem: %C1, \J0, \N3, \Q3, "H3
FCC INFORMATION
The following text is an addendum to Appendix C: FCC Information in the TelePort Series User’s Guide.
“This device complies with Part 15 of the FCC Rules. Operation is subject to the following conditions:
1. This device may not cause harmful interference.
2. This device must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation.”
• The blinking “received fax” indicator does not appear in the menu bar if the Macintosh is reset or turned on after a fax has been received, but not yet viewed.
• Although GlobalFax can receive up to 256 pages, it can not schedule or envelope faxes greater then 127 pages. Attempting to schedule or envelope a fax greater than 127 pages may cause a crash.
• Choosing commands from the TelePort menu (the menu that you can access from the modem status bar) while AppleTalk Remote Access is in auto-answer mode will have no effect.
This section contains information about conflicts between Global Village products and the following:

This information is provided so that you can minimize hardware and software conflicts within your system.
• Desk Accessories and HyperCard-based applications
Problem: The Option-File Chooser shortcut does not work with desk accessories or other applications whose Print command is not located in the File menu.
The Option-File Chooser shortcut does not work with HyperCard-based applications.
Solution: Use the Chooser to select GlobalFax before attempting to fax.
APPLICATIONS
• DeltaGraph 1.5
Problem: The fax output is blank.
Solution: Select QuickDraw, rather than PostScript, in the GlobalFax dialog box.
• FullWrite and THINK Pascal
Problem: FullWrite assumes Option-File means “Print Page.”
Think Pascal assumes Option-File means “Print All Files” in the project.
Solution: Use Command-File to access the Fax Center.
Note: FullWrite doesn’t allow the word “Print” in its File menu to be changed to “Fax.” When you use Command-File, you will not see a visual indication that GlobalFax has been selected.
• Microsoft Word
Problem: Spacing within a line of text can vary when multiple fonts, sizes, and styles are used.
Solution: For the best text appearance, always select the Fractional Widths option in Word’s Page Setup dialog box.
• Microsoft Works
Problem: Right-justified columns in spreadsheet documents may have characters clipped on the right edge.
Solution: Don’t use right-justified columns, or try using a different font or font size.
• PageMaker
Problem: Documents with heavy kerning or leading experience font overlapping.
Solution: Aldus is aware of the problem.
• Ready, Set, Go!
Problem: Choosing the Printer Setup menu command (“Fax Setup” command if option key is down) from the File menu crashes your computer.
Solution: Choose the Page Setup menu command instead. Page Setup contains all the settings accessible from the Printer Setup command.
• DesignStudio
Problem: DesignStudio does not work well with QuickDraw printers such as StyleWriter, ImageWriter, and GlobalFax. The most common problem is overlapping text.
Solution: LetraSet is aware of the problem.
• Persuasion 2.1
Problem: Faxing from Persuasion gives a printer error.
Solution: If GlobalFax is not your default printer, select “Chooser” from the Apple menu and select GlobalFax from within the chooser. From Persuasion's File menu, select “Page Setup…” and set any desired page setup attributes. Select “Print…” from the File menu and enter all desired information. After clicking “Send…” the print dialog may appear as many as four more times (depending on if you checked “Slides,” “Outline,” “Notes,” and “Handouts”). Fill out each subsequent print dialog the same way you filled out the first print dialog.
• Studio32, and ColorStudio 1.0
Problem: Studio32 and ColorStudio only support printing to color printers. They cannot be used with this version of GlobalFax software, which is treated as a black and white printer.
Solution: Color printer support will be available in future versions of GlobalFax software.
INITs, CDEVs, FKEYs
• ClickChange
Problem: ClickChange causes menu bar problems with GlobalFax software.
Solution: Global Village is working with the developer of ClickChange to determine a solution to this problem.
• GateKeeper Aid
Problem: Versions of GateKeeper Aid prior to 1.2.6 were incompatible with GlobalFax software.
Solution: GateKeeper Aid 1.2.6 (or later) includes support for the GlobalFax software and allows modules, such as Fax Center to Res Self, meaning that it will function correctly in GateKeeper’s Notify and Veto modes. Since GlobalFax software must have read/write access to all of its files, please make sure you are using the latest version of GateKeeper Aid.
• More DiskSpace
Problem: More DiskSpace compresses everything on the disk, corrupting the TelePort Serial control panel.
Solution: The author of More DiskSpace is working on a solution to this problem.
• SuperBoomerang and Directory Assistance II
Problem: When you choose Save from the Send pop-up menu in the GlobalFax dialog box, a fax document should be saved in the Spooled Faxes folder. However, SuperBoomerang and Directory Assistance II display the folder you last opened, which may not be the Spooled Faxes folder.
Solution: Make sure that you save fax documents to the Spooled Faxes folder. The Spooled Faxes folder is inside the GlobalFax Files folder, which is inside your System Folder. If you inadvertantly save a fax document to the wrong location, manually move the file to the Spooled Faxes folder.
• Tempo FKEY
Problem: The FKEY 6 provided with Tempo conflicts with the GlobalFax manual receive FKEY.
Solution: GlobalFax reserves 6 and 7 for its own uses; renumber the Tempo FKEY to something other than 6 or 7.
COMMUNICATIONS SOFTWARE
• Timbuktu Remote
Problem: When the TelePort fax/modem is configured to auto-answer with Timbuktu, you will not be able to send or receive faxes because the modem will always be in use.
Solution: Quit Timbuktu Remote before sending or receiving a fax.
•Do not use 300 bps when connecting to AppleLink via the TelePort Serial Gold/Silver (USA) AppleLink CCL.
HARDWARE
• CommCard (4-port NuBus Serial Card)
Fax transmissions through a CommCard serial port will hang the Macintosh computer.
•Shiva LanRover/L
When using a TelePort Serial (Silver or Gold) modem with the Shiva LanRover/L and AppleTalk Remote Access, be sure to use the specific ARA script for the LanRover/L supplied on the installer disks.
