  16. freshman drool. It also makes <i>Time</i>'s circulation
  17. rise, if you know what we mean. If the <a LINK TO
  18. REBUTTAL>media frenzy</A> fueled by a certain newsweekly is
  19. to be believed, the Internet is drowning in a cesspool of
  20. Way New Pornography. But the path to prurience on the Net
  21. often ends with a "404 Not Found" or a "403 Forbidden," as
  22. any seasoned sex surfer will tell you. Cottage porn sites
  23. run out of their owners' homes are often unreliable and difficult
  24. to find. <p>

  26. Most of the material on larger sex-oriented sites is
  27. repurposed, just as mainstream journalism is regurgitated
  28. onto the Web by sites like <a
  29. href="http://www.pathfinder.com">Pathfinder</a>. Three of
  30. the most popular Web sites are those run by <i><a
  31. href="http://www.playboy.com/>Playboy</a></i>, <i><a
  32. href="http://www.penthousemag.com/">Penthouse</a></i>, and <i><a
  33. href="http://hustler.onprod.com/">Hustler</a></i> to promote
  34. their print magazines.  <a
  35. href="http://kspace.com/KM/screen.sys/Bimbeaux/pages/piece1.html">Adult-video</a> companies have also jumped on the marketing
  36. bandwagon. Imagine the disappointment of visitors to <a
  37. href="http://webnetserv.com/girls/home.html">Girls of 
  38. Internet</a> when they discover the site just promotes a
  39. phone-sex service. <p>

  41. Those who browse <a
  42. href="http://www.netaxs.com/people/beauty/netsex.html">guides
  43. to sex on the Internet</a> will find that the Net's
  44. out-of-the-way red-light district lacks the production
  45. values found on its Netscape-enhanced main avenues. There's
  46. <a href="http://www.casti.com/PRD/home.html">pedophilia</a>
  47. and <a
  48. href="http://www.zoom.com/personal/aberno/zoomorph/">bestiality</a>,
  49. but they're often about as titillating as an article in an
  50. academic journal. <p>

  52. Even the now-infamous <a
  53. href="http://www.lib.ox.ac.uk/internet/news/faq/by_group.alt.sex.html">alt.sex</a>
  54. hierarchy of newsgroups doesn't really offer point-and-click
  55. porn. Though some material there would shock even <a
  56. href="gopher://chaos.dac.neu.edu:1112/11/Congressional/Oregon/OR-JR">Senator
  57. Bob Packwood</a>, would-be dirty downloaders must wade
  58. through juvenile postings and contend with the intricacies
  59. of <i>uudecode</i> and <i>binhex</i>. <p>

  61. Before you give up trolling the Net for <a
  62. href="http://www.labri.u-bordeaux.fr/~paries/Image/GIRLS/GIRLS.html">half-clothed
  63. supermodels</a>, take a look at some sites trying to save
  64. you from yourself. Try your <a
  65. href="ftp://ftp.netcom.com/pub/ea/earl/WorldWideWank.html">hand</a>
  66. at <a
  67. href="http://www.stolaf.edu/people/bierlein/noxxx/noxxx.html">dealing
  68. with pornography</a>, or reaffirm your family values by
  69. visiting the <a href="http://www.cc.org/">Christian
  70. Coalition</a>. And before you give up entirely, be sure to
  71. take one last look at some of the <a
  72. href="http://www.law.cornell.edu/constitution/constitution.billofrights.html
  73. #amendmenti">unseemly filth</a> the US Senate recently <a
  74. href="http://www.panix.com/vtw/exon/">voted</a> to abolish.
