  5. The Beta 5 version of NCSA Mosaic for the Macintosh 2.0 was 
  6. released Tuesday April 6, 1995, internal to NCSA.
  7.  
  8. This is a BETA release, therefore there are many new features or 
  9. bugs that you will need to be aware of to make your use of the new 
  10. release a pleasant experience.  You may encounter problems that 
  11. will cause your machine to crash. You may not find certain aspects 
  12. of the program aesthetically pleasing,  and the program will trash 
  13. your current preferences.

  17. For best results, please make a copy of your preferences file (Mosaic 
  18. Preferences) before using the new beta versions. This is only 
  19. necessary only to update preferences prior to Beta 1.

  35. 'anonymous' as the name and your complete email address as the

  42. software. Because of this, you may get an error message.  Please wait

  63. DECOMPRESSING THE ARCHIVE

  66. To UnStuff & UnBinHex NCSA Mosaic we recommend that you use
  67. StuffIt Expander.  The expander is available at ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu  
  68. in the /Mosaic/Mac/Helpers/ directory.

  70. Important Note
  71.  
  72. Some people are having problems starting up MacMosaic. If MacMosaic
  73. crashes before the splash screen is displayed, it is possible that there
  74. is a problem with your system. We now know that when the Apple Shared 
  75. Library Manager(ASLM) is deinstalled improperly, when any application asks
  76. the MacOS if ASLM is present, the system will crash. One major caveat 
  77. is that we have no idea how to properly deinstall ASLM. The installer 
  78. has no remove option. There are two ways to correct this. You can reinstall
  79. your system, or you can reinstall the ASLM.

  81. It is possible that this problem may exist with other MacOS
  82. extensionsthat require an installer. If MacMosaic won't start
  83. up on your machine, we recommend that you reinstall the system.

  86. Current Known Problems
  87. *****************************************************
  88.     
  89.     The cache files used by the 68K are different from those
  90.         used by the PowerMacs. Therefore, running a PowerMac
  91.         version on a machine with 68K cache files will cause
  92.         strangeness.
  93.     "View Source" will not work with documents extracted 
  94.         from cache
  95.     The URL text entry box may not select text properly.
  96.         This problem only exists on PowerMacs.
  97.     Copy and Paste may still have some problems.
  98.     When a document is downloading, clicking on a link should
  99.         cancel the current load and start a new one.
  100.     Only one history popup menu is available for all windows.
  101.     The align attributes for HTML paragraph tag is not yet
  102.         supported.
  103.     The center tag will be supported in the next version.
  104.     When saving files to disk, the default name is sometimes
  105.         messed up.

  112.     Align attributes for HEAD tags is support.
  113.     Anchors that are not terminated properly are handled
  114.         gracefully.
  115.     Visited link aging now works properly. If you visit a 
  116.         link once, the display color migrates toward the 
  117.         color of unvisited links.
  118.     ALL temp files now get deleted, as well as hanging
  119.         cache files.
  120.     In certain instances, forms entry fields would not be
  121.         displayed.
  122.     Some problems with multiple submissions of one form 
  123.         have been fixed.
  124.     The history pop up is now redrawn properly.
  125.     A problem with multiple windows that would cause
  126.         strangeness was fixed.

  146.         when you tryed to send the mail.

  156. If you have used NCSA Mosaic for the Mac 2.0.0 BETA 1, and you started
  157. with a new preferences file at that point, you don't need to trash your 
  158. preferences again.

  160.     Mosaic would crash sometimes if you moved off a page while it was
  161.         still paginating, and then returned to it.
  162.     Extracting tables from cache now works.
  163.     Loading XBMs under certain circumstances previously could 
  164.         cause problems. It's fixed.
  165.     Some probems with backgound colors have been fixed.
  166.     It was previously possible to submit a form several times before the
  167.         first submission was processed. This would cause a crash.
  168.     Another problem with interrupting downloads has been fixed.

  178. FROM THE PREFERENCES FOLDER AND LAUNCH NCSA MOSAIC TO HAVE IT CREATE A

  183.     NCSA Mosaic now supports the mailto: tag.  A mail server for the
  184.     user must be set in the "Preferences", under "Gates" before this
  185.     feature is accessible.

  189.     A local disk caching feature has been implemented.  NCSA Mosaic will
  190.     now retain copies of recently accessed documents to decrease the
  191.     amount of time spent accessing the network.  There is also a "Cache"
  192.     section in the "Preferences...".  Caching preferences should be set
  193.     soon after starting this version of NCSA Mosaic.  If this is not
  194.     done, NCSA Mosaic will default to the System Folder as its cache
  195.     directory resulting in a large number of cache files being saved
  196.     to the System Folder.
