There are a lot of dumb products out there. A lot of stupid product management. Too much stupidity working in tech help. Far too much bad product marketing. The list goes on...
Macs NO Sense is a new, semi-regular feature in which we invite you to submit your gripes about the industry, companies, software. et al. If you experienced anything with a high "duh" factor, send it to our e-mail address (found in Get Info). Nothing stupid should go unnoticed!
• It Macs No Sense that Intel continues to advertise the virtues of the 486 and Pentium processors in the pages of Macintosh magazines. “Duh, yeah, okay… I’ll just sell my Mac right now and run right out and buy a Windows machine, buy all new software, and toss out three years of work in Macintosh file formats.” It’s a sad, last-ditch attempt for Intel to assert itself as the ‘definitive’ chip manufacturer.
• It Macs No Sense that Apple has not announced upgrade plans for the LC III or the LC 520 to future Power Macintoshes. The LC 475 and LC 575, which are upgradeable, share identical chassis to the LC III and LC 520 (respectively). The kicker: the LC III debuted at the same time as the currently upgradeable Centris 610 and Centris 650, while the LC 520 debuted later that summer.
• It Macs No Sense that many game manufacturers think that they are producing wonderful Macintosh games by simply recoding and porting the 320x240 DOS versions. “Whee! I have a Macintosh with built-in stereo sound and 640x480 16-bit color graphics and now I can play Space Quest at the same resolution I could on my Apple II!”
• It Macs No Sense that Apple Canada has not offered the 486SX PDS card (found in the Quadra 610 DOS compatible) with other Macintosh models or as a stand alone product. The PDS card, which theoretically should function properly in the Centris 610 and 650, and the Quadra 610, 650 and 800, would certainly be a quick selling item.
