Apple Debuts Fastest PC on the Market
Apple is once again the largest single shipper of personal com-
puters in the world. It regained that title from Compaq in the
third quarter of 1994. Apple is celebrating its muscle with the
introduction of the world’s fastest personal computer—the Power
Macintosh 8100/110. Fueled by a 110MHz RISC-based PowerPC
601 chip, the Power Macintosh 8100/110 is configured with
16MB RAM, a 2GB hard disk, double- speed CD-ROM drive, and
Apple SuperDrive 1.4MB floppy disk drive. With a U.S. Apple price of $6,379, ($8,250 Cdn.) the Power Macintosh 8100/110 is available immediately in limited quantities.
More Software Updates
Apple has introduced more software updates: the Multimedia Tuner 2.0
improves sound and video compatibility with various machines; and the
Apple Built-in Ethernet 1.0f1 extension resolves problems for most of
its recent high performance machines. (The built-in Ethernet software must be installed in conjunction with Apple's Network Product Installer software version 1.45). The updates are available on many online services and from Apple dealers.
Apple Ships 10T/5 Workgroups Hub, Apple RAID software
In November Apple began shipping its affordable Ethernet 10T/5
Workgroup Hub. The new compact five-port hub is Apple Priced at
$149 in the U.S. Another new product is Apple's RAID (Redundant
Array of Independent Disks) Software for Apple's PowerPC micro-
processor-based Workgroup Servers 6150, 8150, and 9150.
The RAID software provides users with an easy-to-use graphical
interface and the two most commonly used RAID levels: Level 1 (Data
Mirroring) and Level 0 (Data Striping). Mirroring is a data-reliabi-
lity technology that involves the simultaneous writing of data on two independent hard disks. If either hard disk fails, users can continue to access data from the surviving disk without data loss and with no additional effort from attached users. Striping enables the server to store successive units of data across multiple hard disks and multiple SCSI buses which may increase performance depending on the application used. Apple RAID is now included with all of Apple’s PowerPC processor-based Workgroup Servers at no charge and Apple intends to send the Apple RAID Software to PowerPC processor-based Workgroup Servers and PowerPC Workgroup Server logic board upgrades to customers who have returned their product registration card. This offer ends February 28, 1995. For more info on Apple RAID contact the Apple Network Information Line at (408) 862-3385.
