- Gatekeeper Anti-Virus System 1.2.1
- (c) 1988-1991 by Chris Johnson
-
-
-
- Gatekeeper is an anti-virus system for Macintosh computers which is designed
- to prevent the spread of both known and possible future viruses. It is
- capable of preventing the spread of all known Macintosh viruses. It also
- has the ability to automatically detect and remove WDEF, CDEF and MDEF
- infections on the fly. Finally, it has a proven, if inevitably imperfect,
- record of discovering and preventing the spread of new viruses.
-
- The complete distribution set will be sent to comp.binaries.mac and the
- info-mac archives. It is immediately available for anonymous ftp from the
- following archive site:
-
- Machine Name IP Number
- ------------ ---------
- microlib.cc.utexas.edu 128.83.186.13
-
- The file is named gatekeeper-121.hqx and is located in the microlib/mac/virus
- directory on this archive site. The BinHexed, self extracting archive
- file contains Gatekeeper 1.2.1, Gatekeeper Aid 1.2.1 and all associated docu-
- mentation. Since it is a self extracting archive file, users of current Gate-
- keeper versions PRIOR to 1.2 should place their copies of Gatekeeper in
- Override mode before clicking on the "Gatekeeper 1.2.1.sea" file
- which will be generated by decoding the gatekeeper-121.hqx BinHex file.
-
- The primary purpose of version 1.2.1 is to correct problems that prevented
- Gatekeeper 1.2 from loading during startup (due to a lack of memory).
- Those problems resulted in Gatekeeper and/or Gatekeeper Aid crashing or
- refusing to load during startup.
-
- Other changes and fixes include...
-
- * Gatekeeper no longer has an "Override" mode. Several people pointed out
- that this was a rather artifical concept which caused unnecessary
- confusion over an otherwise simple feature. Gatekeeper now has an
- ON/OFF switch. When the switch is in the ON position (which is the default)
- Gatekeeper is operating normally. When the switch is placed in the OFF
- position Gatekeeper's protections are disabled - this is the equivalent
- of turning override mode ON. Gatekeeper can only be OFF for 30 minutes,
- just like override mode. So this is little more than a change of term-
- inology, but it should help make Gatekeeper a little easier to use.
-
- Note that the log file viewer in Gatekeeper Controls has been updated to
- go along with this change. Override ON messages now read "Gatekeeper OFF"
- and Override OFF messages now read "Gatekeeper ON".
-
- * Operations on DAs with their own BNDLs in System 7.0 now work without
- privilege violations being generated.
-
- * The privilege list in Gatekeeper Controls now gracefully handles cases in
- which two privilege list editors are being used at once (like if a System
- 7 user has two copies of Gatekeeper Controls open, or has a copy of Controls
- and the Privilege Mover open at the same time).
-
- * Privilege Mover? Yup. The Privilege Mover module from Gatekeeper 2.0dxx
- was ported down to version 1.2.1. In order to support the Privilege Mover
- under Systems prior to 7.0, the Gatekeeper Application (a cdev shell, by any
- other name) was also ported down.
-
- * Gatekeeper Controls does a better job of opening and operating under low
- memory conditions.
-
- * Selections made in Gatekeeper Control's section list with the tab key now
- wrap around (if you don't have any idea what I'm talking about, just keep
- hitting the tab key - you'll see what I mean).
-
- * The code responsible for creating the Gatekeeper Prefs and Gatekeeper
- Log files has been updated so it sets the ioFVersNum field of the applicable
- parameter blocks to zero. This corrects a problem that resulted in those
- files sometimes being invisible in "Open..." dialogs, among other things.
-
- * The default privilege list has been updated to include a number of recently
- reported privileges for some common (and not so common) programs.
-
- NOTE: Gatekeeper 1.2.1 is still compatible with the Gatekeeper Prefs file
- from Gatekeeper 1.2, so, if you're already using 1.2 and you've heavily
- altered its privilege list, there's no need to trash your existing Prefs
- file - you can continue to use your existing one.
