Load/Save Desktop
Requires: Scriptable Finder, AppleScript. (That's System 7.5 to those not in the know)
Doesn't require: Unusual scripting extensions.
Here are a couple of scripts which enable to you save the layout of the items on your desktop. I originally wrote this because the Finder scatters icons far and wide when you change resolutions on a multiscan monitor and the items can no longer fit on the desktop. You may find other uses for these scripts.
Use the Save Desktop script to save the selected desktop items (or all of them if none are selected) to a file. This file happens to be an AppleScript file, but don't let that worry you. To restore the settings in this file, drag'n'drop it onto the Load Desktop script.
This is freeware. If stuffing around with the script editor for a bit actually merits the term, that is.
