Volume Watch is a background-only application that ensures that the OtherMenu Folder contains an alias to each mounted disk, and removes aliases for disks that are no longer mounted. It uses a 10K memory partition and little processor time.
More specifically, Volume Watch counts mounted volumes every 10 seconds or so. If the number has changed, it creates an alias to any new volume. The name of the alias is the prefix string “Δ ” followed by the name of the volume. It also deletes any disk alias in the OtherMenu Folder whose name is the prefix string followed by a name that is not that of a mounted volume. On every 5th check, this complete scan is done even if the volume count has not changed, to make sure it doesn’t miss a change if you remove a volume and quickly mount another.
The fact that Volume Watch is a background-only application means that it has no user interface and will not appear in your application menu. Of course it follows that there is no user-friendly way to configure it. However, various things can be changed with the aid of ResEdit: You can change the prefix string by editing the 'Prfx' resource. You can change the folder to be watched by changing the path in the 'Path' resource. (The path begins with a colon to indicate that it is relative to the System Folder.) You can change the frequency of the scans by editing the 'Time' resource. Memory requirement can be altered using the 'SIZE' and 'Stak' resources, but don’t do that unless you are sure you know what you are doing.
