This Nebraska bison's ancestors
survived Buffalo Bill: As American
settlers moved onto the Great Plains
in the 1800s, they shot millions of
bison. Why? For the hides--which were
worth $3.50 each in the l870s. For
the tongues--considered a delicacy.
For the sport--hunters fired from
train windows. And for revenge--as
settlers tried to deprive Native
Americans of their main source of
food.
