  3.   Soon after sunset, the howls of 
  4. golden jackals echo across the 
  5. %F,10,h\plain%plains of northern Africa. Jackals 
  6. hunt mainly at night. With loud 
  7. calls, these members of the dog 
  8. family signal the beginning of their
  9. hunt. At sunrise, jackals again 
  10. begin their eerie howls. Jackals 
  11. communicate with many other kinds of 
  12. sounds. They bark softly to warn 
  13. that lions are nearby. Pups whine 
  14. when they greet their parents.

  16.   Golden jackals roam the grassy 
  17. plains of Africa and the %F,10,g\brush%brushy 
  18. %F,10,h\woodland%woodlands of India. Other kinds of 
  19. jackals are found only in Africa. 
  20. The silver-backed, or black-backed, 
  21. jackal makes its home in brushy 
  22. woodlands. The tan-and-red fur of 
  23. this bold animal is topped with a 
  24. saddle of black-and-white hairs on 
  25. its back. The side-striped jackal 
  26. often lives in brushy areas where 
  27. the animal can find cover more 
  28. easily. But it may hunt on the 
  29. plains.

  31.   Jackals usually hunt alone for 
  32. small %F,10,h\mammal%mammals and insects. When they
  33. pair up or hunt in small groups, 
  34. they can bring down bigger game, 
  35. such as a young gazelle. Jackals 
  36. often feed on the remains of dead 
  37. animals or on kills that have been 
  38. made by other %F,10,g\carnivor%carnivores. After a 
  39. lion has fed from a kill, jackals 
  40. gather round to eat the scraps.

  42.   A pair of male and female jackals 
  43. stays together for years, or even 
  44. for life. Before giving birth to her
  45. young, the female takes over a %F,10,g\den%den, 
  46. often an abandoned aardvark %F,10,g\burrow%burrow. 
  47. One to eight helpless pups are born 
  48. in a %F,10,g\litter%litter. Both parents help care 
  49. for the young. At two weeks of age, 
  50. the pups begin to explore their 
  51. world. After three months, they are 
  52. ready to tag along on hunting trips.
  53. Young silver-backed jackals and 
  54. golden jackals often stay with their
  55. parents for a year and help raise 
  56. the next litter.
