Big is beautiful: Sea lions carry a
layer of fat, called %f,10,g\blubber%blubber, under
their skins. Blubber helps them
float, insulates the animals from icy
polar waters, and can provide energy
when food is scarce. Seals and wal-
ruses also depend on an insulating
layer of blubber. These closely
related %f,10,h\mammal%mammals are sometimes grouped
as a separate %f,10,h\order%order of mammals called
%f,10,h\pinniped%pinnipeds. But most %f,10,h\mammalog%mammalogists
today consider them part of the
%f,10,g\carnivor%carnivore %f,10,h\order%order.
