  3.   Tireless hunters, weasels bound 
  4. and zigzag across %f,10,g\brush%brushy ground 
  5. after %f,10,h\rodent%rodents and small birds. They 
  6. even dart into %f,10,g\burrow%burrows after ground 
  7. squirrels. With its slender body 
  8. and short legs, a weasel can easily 
  9. squeeze into underground %f,10,g\den%dens, where
  10. it can kill its %f,10,h\prey%prey. Larger weasels
  11. sometimes hunt rabbits. A weasel may
  12. kill more food than it needs. It 
  13. stores the food in a safe place and
  14. returns to it later.

  16.   Weasels live in meadows, %f,10,g\forest%forests, 
  17. and %f,10,g\grasslan%grasslands in many parts of the 
  18. world. They take shelter in burrows 
  19. and rock crevices or among tree 
  20. roots. Of about 15 %f,10,h\species%species, or 
  21. kinds, of weasels, only the 
  22. long-tailed weasel, the short-tailed
  23. weasel, and the least weasel are 
  24. found in North America.

  26.   The weasel has %f,10,h\scentgla%scent_glands that 
  27. produce a strong-smelling substance.
  28. It uses these glands to leave %f,10,h\scentmar%scent 
  29. %f,10,h\scentmar%marks in its %f,10,h\territor%territory. The scent 
  30. tells other weasels to hunt 
  31. elsewhere. Weasels also use their 
  32. droppings as scent marks, leaving 
  33. them in conspicuous locations.

  35.   Most weasels have brownish fur 
  36. with lighter underfur. In northern 
  37. parts of North America, Europe, and 
  38. Asia, however, many weasels grow a 
  39. white coat by winter. They are hard 
  40. to see in snowy country. The tail 
  41. tips of some weasels stay black. 
  42. Enemies such as owls and hawks 
  43. sometimes swoop at the black spot of
  44. tail fur and miss the weasel's body.
  45. The short-tailed weasel is called an
  46. ermine when it has its white winter 
  47. fur. In Europe, it is called a stoat
  48. when it has its brown summer coat.

  50.   A female weasel bears from 3 to 13
  51. young once or twice a year. The 
  52. young are small and helpless at 
  53. birth. They stay in a cosy nest 
  54. underground for the first month. 
  55. After about four months, the 
  56. %f,10,h\offsprin%offspring begin to look for their 
  57. own hunting areas.
