  31. I.                        CD Audio Tracks
  32.                           ---------------
  33. Included on this CD are the six songs featured in the program. These 
  34. songs start on Track #2 and can be played on a regular CD player or the
  35. audio CD player of your computer. You may hear a hissing or scratching 
  36. sound during playback of Track #1 on some regular CD players. In order 
  37. to avoid this sound, advance the track number of the CD player to 
  38. Track #2. Please refer to the CD player manufacturer's documentation 
  39. regarding playback of the audio tracks.

  42. II.                       Installation
  43.                           ------------
  44.  
  45. 1. Insert the Math for the Real World CD in the CD-ROM drive.
  46. 2. Select Run from the Program Manager File menu.
  47. 3. At the Open box, type "D:\setup.exe", where D is the letter of your
  48.    CD-ROM drive.
  49. 4. Click on OK and follow the prompts.

  52.                    To uninstall Math for the Real World
  53.                    ------------------------------------
  54.  
  55. 1. Insert the Math for the Real World CD in the CD-ROM drive.
  56. 2. Double-click the "Uninstall-Insert CD" icon.
  57. 3. You will be given an opportunity to save the data files located in
  58.    the program folder where you installed Math for the Real World.
  59.  
  60.  
  61. III.                     Running the Program
  62.                          -------------------
  63. 1. Insert the Math for the Real World CD in the CD-ROM drive.
  64. 2. From Windows Program Manager, double-click the program icon.
  65. Note: If your system is running a custom desktop, refer to the 
  66.       manufacturer's documentation for instructions on special 
  67.       circumstances.

  71. IV.                         Music Videos                   
  72.                             ------------
  73. Your goal as you travel across the U.S. is to create a cool music video,
  74. so we've included a few for you to sample. To view these samples, click
  75. Play Music Video at the sign-in screen. Highlight a sample video and 
  76. click OK to play.
  77.  
  78. Once you complete a tour, your music video will automatically be saved 
  79. to a list for future viewing (available from the sign-in screen's Play 
  80. Music Video). The video can no longer be edited at this point. Your video 
  81. can be saved to a floppy disk to share with friends.
  82.  
  83. **Note: The Math for the Real World is required in order to playback a 
  84. video. Only videos created with the Windows version may be viewed with 
  85. this version.

  88. To save a video file to a floppy disk or hard drive:
  89. --------------------
  90. 1. Click the "Play Music Video" button from the sign-in screen.
  91.  
  92. 2. Click to highlight the video file you wish to save.
  93.  
  94. 3. Click the "Save Video To Disk " button. A Save file box will appear.
  95.  
  96. 4. In the Filename window, type the name for your video file. Click Save.
  97.  
  98. 5. A copy of the video file will be created in the location you specified.

  101. To play a video from a floppy disk or hard drive:
  102. -------------------------------
  103. 1. Click the "Play Music Video" button from the sign-in screen.
  104.  
  105. 2. Click the "Open Video From Disk" button.  An Open file box will appear.
  106.  
  107. 3. Locate the video file you wish to play. (These files have the "*.rwv" filename 
  108.    extension).
  109.  
  110. 4. Click the Open button.  The 'Loading Video...' screen will begin the 
  111.    video playback.

  114. V.                           MIDI Audio
  115.                              ----------
  116. Some of the music in the program is MIDI audio. If you experience audio 
  117. problems using Math for the Real World, please consult your system 
  118. documentation or contact the system manufacturer/vendor regarding the proper 
  119. MIDI settings.

  123. VI.                    Davidson Product Sampler
  124.                        ------------------------  
  125. Included on the Math for the Real World CD are the Davidson Product Previews 
  126. which outline many Davidson products. To view the Product Previews, you 
  127. first need to install some necessary files to the hard drive.
  128.  
  129. 1. Insert the program's CD into the CD-ROM drive.
  130. 2. Double-click the "Davidson Product Sampler" icon.
  131. 3. A "Davidson Product Sampler" program group will be created.
  132. 4. If your system does not have QuickTime for Windows, a QuickTime  
  133.    install prompt will appear.
  134. 5. Press OK to install QuickTime, and follow the prompts.
  135.  
  136. To install QuickTime at a later time:
  137. 1. Insert the program's CD into the CD-ROM drive.
  138. 2. Select the Run... command from Program Manager's File menu.
  139. 3. Type "D:\Previews\Qtwfiles\Qt16inst.exe" 
  140.    (where D is the assigned letter for the CD-ROM drive).
  141. 4. Press OK and follow the prompts.

  147. VII.               Troubleshooting and Performance Tips
  148.                ------------------------------------
  149.  
  150. If the program is very slow:
  151. ----------------------------
  152. 1. Close any unnecessary applications that may be running.
  153. 2. Be sure you are running Windows in enhanced mode and that the    
  154.    Virtual Memory settings are active. Refer to the performance tips 
  155.    below or your Windows documentation.
  156. 3. Make sure your display setting is at 640x480 resolution 
  157.    and 256 colors. Refer to your system or Windows documentation.
  158.  
  159. If the program does not run when you double-click on Rwmath16.exe from
  160. the File Manager or type Rwmath16.exe from the Run line:

  163. Math for the Real World requires a command line parameter for its
  164. executable to run. We recommend running the program from its
  165. installed icon; refer to the Installation section above
  166. to install the icons.

  169. If display problems occur:
  170. --------------------------
  171. If you experience graphics problems while running Math for the Real World,
  172. contact your video card or system vendor to obtain the latest version
  173. of their video driver.

  176. If sound problems occur:
  177. ------------------------
  178. If you experience sound problems while running Math for the Real World,
  179. contact your sound card or system vendor to obtain the latest version
  180. of their sound driver.

  183. Screen savers:
  184. --------------
  185. If you are running a screen saver in the background and experience
  186. video and sound problems during the program, disable the screen saver
  187. and the problem should be solved. Refer to your screen saver 
  188. documentation on how to disable the screen saver.

  191. Maze controls
  192. -------------
  193. To control the player icon in the Maze game, use the arrow keys on the 
  194. keyboard. The game cannot be played with a joystick.
  195.  
  196.  
  197. Windows keyboards
  198. -----------------
  199. If you wish to use the keypad for entering your answers, the keyboard's
  200. NumLock feature should be turned on.

  203. Video Preview and Playback in the Studio
  204. ----------------------------------------
  205. To improve performance of your video playback, delete one or more video 
  206. animations from the scene.
  207.  
  208.  
  209.             System Performance Tips
  210.                         -----------------------
  211. These tips are designed to improve your system's performance:
  212.  
  213. Optimize your hard disk to increase disk access performance
  214. -----------------------------------------------------------
  215.  
  216. With MS-DOS 5.0 or older, you'll need to use a separate utility for 
  217. disk optimization. If you are using MS-DOS 6.0 or newer, use the 
  218. following steps to defragment and optimize your disk:
  219.  
  220. 1.  Exit Windows. At the C:\> prompt, type "defrag C: /f" and  press 
  221.     ENTER. This process will take a few minutes.
  222. 2.  Reenter Windows and run the program.
  223.  
  224. Increase the available memory for running Windows programs
  225. ----------------------------------------------------------
  226.  
  227. Change the SMARTDrive cache size to make more memory available. 
  228. If you have more than 8 MB of RAM, skip this process.
  229. 1.  Go to the Program Manager.
  230. 2.  Select Run from the File menu.
  231. 3.  At the command box, type "sysedit" and click OK.
  232. 4.  The Sysedit window will appear. Click on the Autoexec.bat window to
  233.     bring it to the front.
  234. 5.  Locate the line that shows smartdrv.exe and type in the appropriate
  235.     sizes.
  236.      *  If you have 8 MB of RAM, add 1024 1024. Your SMARTDrive setting
  237.         should look like this: smartdrv.exe 1024 1024 (you have typed
  238.         in 1024 1024).
  239.      Note: Leave any other options on the smartdrv.exe line as they are
  240.      set.
  241.      For example:
  242.      (before) smartdrv.exe /q      (after) smartdrv.exe 1024 1024 /q
  243. 6.  If you've made changes, select Save from the File menu.
  244. 7.  Select Exit from the File menu.
  245. 8.  Exit Windows and restart the computer.
  246.  
  247. Set up virtual memory to give Windows more memory
  248. -------------------------------------------------
  249. (Note: If you are running any disk-compression software, refer to the
  250. software manual or call the software manufacturer for assistance in 
  251. setting up a permanent swap file.)
  252. 1.  Run Defrag as described above.
  253. 2.  Start Windows, go to the Program Manager, and double-click the
  254.     Control Panel icon in the Main group.
  255. 3.  Double-click the 386 Enhanced icon in the Control Panel group.
  256. 4.  Click the Virtual Memory button on the right side.
  257. 5.  Make sure the Size is set to at least 4000 KB if you have 8 MB 
  258.     of RAM. Also make sure Type is set to Permanent.
  259.     If these are not the current settings, click the Change button.
  260. 6.  Under New Settings, make sure the Type is Permanent and the Size is
  261.     set according to #5 above. The bigger the swap file size, the 
  262.     better performance you will have. We recommend setting the size to 
  263.     at least 8000 KB (but not exceeding 16000 KB). This will improve
  264.     your system's overall performance.
  265. 7.  Click OK. Follow the prompt to restart Windows.

  271. VIII.                  Technical Support

  274. Video drivers and system settings
  275. ---------------------------------
  276. Information about your system's video drivers can often assist our Technical 
  277. Support staff in diagnosing problems that are encountered when running the program.
  278. To get information about your system's video drivers:
  279. 1. Double-click the Windows Setup icon in the Main program group.
  280. 2. Write down the entry next to "Display". 
  281.  
  282. To find out more about the system settings, you can use the Microsoft 
  283. Diagnostics utility which is available with Windows. From the DOS 
  284. prompt(C:\), type 'msd' and write down the settings for Memory 
  285. and Video.
  286.  
  287. Calling Technical Support
  288. -------------------------
  289. Please have the following information ready if and when you call:
  290.  
  291. 1. The product name and version number located at the top of this 
  292.    ReadMe file.
  293. 2. The processor and clock speed of your computer (e.g., 486/66).
  294. 3. Your operating system's version number. From Program Manager, choose
  295.    Help--About Program Manager.
  296. 4. The brand name of the sound device installed in the computer.
  297. 5. The amount of free memory (memory available to run the program) that
  298.    the computer has. (Open Program Manager and select About Program Manager
  299.    from the Help menu). From the dialog box that appears, write down 
  300.    the Memory and System Resources values.
  301. 6. The complete and exact error message reported by the program (if
  302.    any).
