║ V7-MERCURY Graphic CARD : General Remarks ║
╚═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
The V7-MERCURY graphic card is a product that offers significantly
enhanced features compared to other standard VGA graphic and
accelerator boards.
This particularly applies to
- higher resolutions and
- higher refresh rates.
Please be aware that you can only take full advantage of the
features provided by the V7-MERCURY, if the other components of
your system, especially the graphic monitor that is being used,
also comply with the specifications of the V7-MERCURY.
(Example : The resolution 1280x1024 that is supported by the
V7-MERCURY can obviously not be used with a monitor that is speci-
fied to only support resolutions up to 1024x768.)
The advantages of the "VESA Local Bus" can only be used with a
V7-MERCURY (VL) board, if this card is installed in a PC system
with a VESA Local Bus interface.

║ Windows Driver Installation ║
╚═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
For installing the SPEA V7 Windows driver 'BigWin':
After the end of the current installation procedure,
please insert disk "Drivers for Windows" and type:
README [─┘]
╔═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ Drivers / Utilities Installation For Other Applications ║
╚═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
Usually two major steps are necessary to install the driver(s)
for a specific non windows application.
(1) First the driver modules must be copied from the V7-MERCURY Super-
disk to the hard disk of your system.
This is done by the INSTALL program provided with the V7-MERCURY
Superdisk.
Before you start INSTALL you should know in which drives and
directories the applications are installed that you want to install
drivers for.
- change to the V7-MERCURY Superdisk and call INSTALL,
- select the language you prefer,
- and follow the instructions given by INSTALL.
(2) After the driver modules have been copied to the hard disk, the
applications need to be re-configured for the new drivers. The
User Manual provides detailed descriptions for each application
supported by the V7-MERCURY.
╔═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ Monitor Selection ║
╚═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
As already mentioned above, the graphic monitor used with the
V7-MERCURY must comply to the specifications of the V7-MERCURY.
Only then can the full functionality of the V7-MERCURY be used.
The User Manual provides detailed information on how to select
and modify the various monitor parameters (resolution and
refresh rates) with the program SPTUNE.EXE.
*** IMPORTANT ***
Please only select parameters that your monitor is specified for.
Your monitor may be seriously damaged, if it is constantly driven
with parameters which are not within the range of its specification.
If you change your monitor you have to compare the specification
and, if necessary, to change the resolutions / refresh rates!
╔═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ Known Limitations ║
╚═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
(1) It is not possible to use two or more VGA boards in one PC at
the same time.
In case you want to use the V7-MERCURY board in a PC that has a
VGA interface integrated on the motherboard, then this integrated
VGA interface must be disabled before the V7-MERCURY may be used.
(2) In some PCs of the Intel 386/25MHz series the V7-MERCURY may only
be used as standard VGA card. Limitations on the Intel 386/25
motherboard do not allow to make use of the accelerator functions
of the V7-MERCURY in such systems.
(3) Some applications such as Windows 3.1, and others offer
"Video 7 ..." display interfaces
in their configuration programs.
These options should NOT be selected when using the V7-MERCURY.
Please follow the instructions given in the user's manual to
guarantee that the optimum configuration for the V7-MERCURY is
being installed.
(4) To keep the compatibility to a lot of monitors, the V7-MERCURY
has the possibility do create low refreshrates at high pixel
resolutions. Synchronisation problems may in this case occure
with high-class multi-sync monitors. To prevent this, please
choose the highest horizontal frequenzy as possible with the
program SPTUNE.EXE or while using the windows utility V7SETUP.
╔═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ Notes on Applications ║
╚═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
Seperate README files are supplied for most application drivers
available for the V7-MERCURY. These READMEs contain last-minute
information not included in the printed documentation and infor-
mation related to known limitations.
These README files are copied to the directory \SPEA\GDC when
the related driver has been selected for installation while
running the INSTALL program. The READMEs can be identified by
the file name extension .DOC .
Use the command SHOW *.DOC from the \SPEA\GDC directory to
display the README file on your screen.
EXAMPLE :
----------
C:>CD \SPEA\GDC change to \SPEA\GDC
C:\SPEA\GDC> SHOW ACAD.DOC Show the README file for AutoCAD
╔═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╗
║ corrections to the users manuals ║
╚═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════╝
Besides the S3 AutoCAD drivers that are described in the manual
SPEA offers also an own AutoCAD display list driver for
AutoCAD release 12 - the new BigFocus 12.
VESA modes
The V7-Mercury BIOS does not support the VESA interface.
If VESA support is required, the small memory resident program
V7MERVBE.EXE should be executed. Video modes can be selected via the
VGA mode numbers. VESA numbers may only be used if the VESA emulator
has been installed.
* A current list of video modes is shown in file BIOS.TXT.
CGA, EGA, Hercules, MDA emulation modes are not supported.
VersaCAD
The driver for VersaCAD is currently not available.
EFIX.EXE:
V7 Utility for fixing problems witch SPTUNE.
Run EFIX if SPTUNE causes an error in the menu "BildTuning Setup".
V7HFREQ.COM:
Higher Refresh Rates also in all VGA standard modes ( Mode Nr. < 30H )
e.g. 640*480*16!
ATTENTION!
If you permanently use your monitor with a refresh
rate that is too high for your monitor you may damage it!
If you are not sure about the monitor frequencies your
monitor supports, please inform yourself about the resolution
and refresh capabilities in your monitor manual.
Please note that you have to adjust the refresh rates again
if you change your monitor.
Usage : V7HFREQ [?][i][o][c][s][1][2][3][bx][u]
Parameter : none - set clock rate to default value
? - print online help
i - invers screen
o - overscan (increase border)
c - color adjustment (background)
s - save background color
1 - set refresh rate to 78 MHz

Problems concerning the connection
==================================
P: You only have a 2400 baud connection, although your modem supports
higher speeds.
A: - If the lines are very bad the modem will set the speed on lower level
automatically to get an error-free connection.
Please call again to get a better line or call later when phone net is
not so busy.
P: Immediately after getting a connect (connect xxx) this connection is
lost.
A: - Check the basics adjustments of your modem as described in the bulletin
'Configuring your modem..').
- Call the lines directly (-93, ...-97).
- If you work on a modem that supports 2400 Baud only please only use the
phone number -97 to make sure that you have no connection with highspeed
modems. Some 2400 baud modems have problems to communicate with HS modems.
P: Immediately after getting a connect (connect xxx) you get AT commands
on your screen.
A: - The called modem was just in initializing, please call again.
P: Immediately after getting a connect (connect xxx) you get chars on your
screen.
A: - Maybe these faults are caused by bad lines. Please call again to get a
better line or call later when phone net is not so busy.
- The chars appears like impulses? Please check whether there are any
impulse counter is connected with your phone line.
P: Special chars (e.g. menu frames, lines,..) are not displayed as such ones
but as characters or control chars.
A: -The terminal emulation you have chosen in configuring your modem is wrong.
Select ANSI.BBS (see bulletin 'basis adjustings'). Note: ANSI.SYS has to
be loaded via CONFIG.SYS.
-For customers who use the Windows 3.1 tool TERMINAL.EXE: This software
offers no terminal emulation that shows all ansi sequeces correctly. To
work nevertheless with this program and our mailbox please select
'DEC VT-100 (ANSI)'. Using this emulation the lines, frames,.. are dis-
played with characters - not correct but readable. So you can altthough
work with the menus.
If you want to have a really correct display you have to use another
terminal software.
Problems concerning the download
================================
P: There is no succesful download: Sending file process will not be started.
("No files to send").
A: - You are in the wrong file area now and the file that you desire so cannot
be found in this file area. (e.g. you want to downlaod FIRE_WIN.EXE but
you are momentary in the area 'FIRE AutoCAD Driver'). -> The current file
area is displayed in the download menu, right, on the top!
Using 'B - List of files in the current area' you can check, whether the
desired file is available in this file area with the used name.
-You have not entered the right file name (error in entering).
-The protocol that you entered doesn't agree with the protocol that you
have selected in your modem configuration.
If you had chosen e.g. Zmodem in YOUR terminal program you MUST also enter
Zmodem in the SPEA mailbox!
-There are some modems that needs pressing the >PageDown< or >Bild ab<
key to start the file transfer. So press this key when you have entered >S<
for 'Start transfer...'.
IMPORTANT: Especially with 2400 modem you must be patient - the modems
need some time for initializing!
- Please check: Does the named destination directory exist? Is there
enough space? Do you have rights to write in this directory (network!).
P: There is no succesful download: The sending process is cancelled.
A: -The protocol that you entered doesn't agree with the protocol that you
have selected in your modem configuration.
If you had chosen e.g. Zmodem in YOUR terminal program you MUST also enter
Zmodem in the SPEA mailbox!
- Select in YOUR modem software Hardware Handshaking (RTS/CTS) as float
control protocol (communication between your modem and your PC)
Do NOT select software Float Control (Xon/Xoff)!
- Deactivate "Compressing data" (V42.bis), all files are already packed
files. Further compressing is not possible and there may occure problems
or time delays caused by the vain attempts to compress the files.
- check the speed modem - COM port: If you have the UART chip type
8250/16450 you can only use speeds upto 9600 bit/s. For HS modems you
better use the chip type 16550 - so are bit rates of 38400 and also 57600
bit/s possible! Use COMTEST (available in our mailbox) to check your
COM port chip on COM 1 / COM 2.
