  46.   The V7-MIRAGE P-64 graphics card is a product that offers significantly
  47.   enhanced features compared to other standard VGA graphic and
  48.   accelerator boards.
  49.  
  50.   This particularly applies to
  51.   - higher resolutions    and
  52.   - higher refresh rates.
  53.  
  54.   Please be aware that you can only take full advantage of the
  55.   features provided by the V7-MIRAGE P-64, if the other components of
  56.   your system, especially the graphic monitor that is being used,
  57.   also comply with the specifications of the V7-MIRAGE P-64.
  58.   (Example : The resolution 1280x1024 that is supported by the
  59.   V7-MIRAGE P-64 can obviously not be used with a monitor that is
  60.   specified to only support resolutions up to 1024x768.)

  62.   Important note:
  63.   The latest production of V7-MIRAGE P-64 graphic boards incorporate S3's
  64.   new Trio64 chip (contains a 64 bit graphics engine) instead of the
  65.   S3 Vision864 chip. The new chip is for VESA local bus and PCI V2.0 bus
  66.   systems. The transistional phase of the change from one processor to
  67.   the other is accompanied by a change to the software. The installation
  68.   procedure supplied with these boards automatically recognizes the
  69.   type of processor used and will install drivers and utilities
  70.   accordingly. The differences in the software are described in the
  71.   following sections. You can use the program S3TEST to identify the
  72.   type of chip used on your board.

  78.   To install the SPEA V7 Windows driver 'BigWin':

  80.   At the end of the current installation procedure,
  81.   please insert disk "Drivers for Windows" and enter:

  90.   Usually two major steps are necessary to install the driver(s)
  91.   for a specific non windows application.
  92.  
  93.   (1) First the driver modules must be copied from the V7-MIRAGE P-64
  94.   Superdisk to the hard disk of your system.
  95.   This is done by the INSTALL program provided with the V7-MIRAGE P-64
  96.   Superdisk.
  97.   Before you start INSTALL you should know in which drives and
  98.   directories the applications are installed that you want to install
  99.   drivers for.
  100.  
  101.   - change to the V7-MIRAGE P-64 Superdisk and call INSTALL,
  102.   - select the language you prefer,
  103.   - and follow the instructions given by INSTALL.
  104.  
  105.   (2) After the driver modules have been copied to the hard disk, the
  106.   applications need to be re-configured for the new drivers. The
  107.   User Manual provides detailed descriptions for each application
  108.   supported by the V7-MIRAGE P-64.
  109.  
  110.   VESA modes:
  111.   The V7-MIRAGE P-64 BIOS of the boards with the Vision864 chip does not
  112.   support the VESA interface directly.
  113.   If VESA support is required, the small memory resident program
  114.   V7MIPVBE.EXE should be executed.
  115.   The V7-MIRAGE P-64 with Trio64 chip supports the VESA modes directly.
  116.   Software such as MS Flight Simulator 5.0 can therefore be run without
  117.   loading V7MIPVBE.EXE, however they do run better with the TSR program.

  120.   ║                    Monitor Selection                        ║

  123.   As already mentioned above, the graphic monitor used with the
  124.   V7-MIRAGE P-64 must comply to the specifications of the V7-MIRAGE
  125.   P-64. Only then can the full functionality of the V7-MIRAGE P-64
  126.   be used.

  128.   In order to configure your V7-MIRAGE P-64 for your monitor use
  129.   the program SPTUNE.
  130.   Windows applications are tuned via the V7SETUP configuration program.

  133.         *** IMPORTANT ***

  135.   Please only select parameters that your monitor is specified for.
  136.   Your monitor may be seriously damaged, if it is constantly driven
  137.   with parameters which are not within the range of its specification.
  138.   If you change your monitor you have to compare the specification
  139.   and, if necessary, to change the resolutions / refresh rates using
  140.   SPEAtune !

  143.   ║                    Known Limitations                        ║

  146.   (1) It is not possible to use two or more active VGA boards in one PC at
  147.   the same time.
  148.   In case you want to use the V7-MIRAGE P-64 board in a PC that has a
  149.   VGA interface integrated on the motherboard, then this integrated
  150.   VGA interface must be disabled before the V7-MIRAGE P-64 may be used.
  151.  
  152.   (2) Some applications such as Windows 3.1, and others offer
  153.   "Video 7 ..." display interfaces in their configuration programs.
  154.  
  155.   These options should NOT be selected when using the V7-MIRAGE P-64.
  156.  
  157.   Please follow the instructions given in the user's manual to
  158.   guarantee that the optimum configuration for the V7-MIRAGE P-64 is
  159.   being installed.

  166.   Seperate README files are supplied for most application drivers
  167.   available for the V7-MIRAGE P-64. These READMEs contain last-minute
  168.   information not included in the printed documentation and infor-
  169.   mation related to known limitations.

  171.   These README files are copied to the directory \SPEA\GDC when
  172.   the related driver has been selected for installation while
  173.   running the INSTALL program. The READMEs can be identified by
  174.   the file name extension .DOC .
  175.  
  176.   Use the command  SHOW *.DOC  from the \SPEA\GDC directory to
  177.   display the README file on your screen.

  189.   SPEA V7-MIRAGE P-64 Trio and SPEA ergonomic modes up to 100 Hz:
  190.   ===============================================================
  191.   The V7-MIRAGE P-64 with the S3 Trio chip supports (via the BIOS) all
  192.   the resolutions available up to a frequency of 75 Hz. A software
  193.   solution is available with SPTUNE to set screen refresh rates up to
  194.   100 Hz. An overview of the frequencies available can be found in the
  195.   file BIOS.TXT. Important: SPEA ergonomics modes with frequencies over
  196.   75 H are only active if the program "V7HFREQ" is loaded with the option
  197.   "t". For this reason a corresponding entry is made in your AUTOEXEC.BAT
  198.   during the installation routine.

  201.   V7-MIRAGE P-64 DRAM Upgrade:
  202.   ============================

  204.   The V7-MIRAGE P-64 can be upgraded to use 2 MB of DRAM.
  205.   The DRAM chips applied for the upgrade must meet the following
  206.   specifications:
  207.  
  208.   1.  256k x 16
  209.   2.  70 ns access time or faster
  210.   3.  FAST-PAGE-MODE
  211.   4.  DUAL CAS MODE
  212.   5.  Symmetrical Addressing
  213.   6.  Package: 40-Pin Plastic SOJ(400 mil)

  215.   (Examples: MICRON MT4C16257DJ-7, Mitsubishi M5M44260AJ-7)

  217.   Ask your dealer for the "V7-MIRAGE P-64 Upgrade 1MB auf 2MB" .

  219.   The installation is easily done by fixing the chips on the sockets
  220.   assigned for the upgrade.
  221.   ATTENTION:
  222.   Take care that the new chips must be installed in the same
  223.   orientation as the present ones! The sloped edge of the sockets
  224.   signifies pin 1.

  227.   VESA Emulation Program:

  229.   In old V7-MIRAGE P-64 manuals, the VESA emulation program
  230.   is named V7MIRVBE.EXE . The correct file name is V7MIPVBE.EXE .
