  19. 1. What is VESA DPMS?
  20. =====================
  21. DPMS stands for 'Display Power Management Signaling' and is a
  22. standard laid down by VESA (Video Electronics Standards Association)
  23. to define the hardware signaling of power management states for use
  24. with video devices, such as monitors. DPMS is a part of the new swedish
  25. TCO 92 standard, which can be regarded as an extension of the
  26. internationally reknown MPR II standard.

  28. The four DPMS states that have been defined are: 'ON', 'STAND-BY', 'SUSPEND'
  29. and 'OFF' (whereby the STAND-BY state is not mandatory for DPMS
  30. compliancy).

  32. 2. What do the four different DPMS states mean?
  33. ===============================================
  34. (a) ON:       Display is in full operation. There is no power saving.
  35. (b) STAND-BY: State of minimal power reduction with the shortest recovery
  36.               time (optional DPMS state).
  37. (c) SUSPEND:  Substantial power management state. The display can have a
  38.               longer recovery time than from the STAND-BY state.
  39. (d) OFF:      The display is consuming the lowest level of power and is
  40.               non-operational. Power saving is maximized.

  42. 3. What is SPEAenergy?
  43. ======================
  44. SPEAenergy is SPEA Software AG's software realization of the VESA DPMS
  45. standard running under windows 3.1x. Using a simple Windows dialogue box it
  46. is possible to define various 'time-out' settings for the transition to the
  47. various DPMS states, relative to a screensaver time setting. SPEA has added
  48. screensaver and password controls for optional use.

  50. 4. What requirements exist for SPEAenergy?

  52. To use DPMS and SPEAenergy fully you require a modern, DPMS-compatible
  53. monitor, such as the SPEA 2185 MS and a SPEA V7 graphics board.

  55. 5. Which SPEA V7 graphic boards support SPEAenergy?
  56. ===================================================
  57. The following table shows you which SPEA V7 hardware supports the DPMS
  58. states, and to which extent: (obviously, all support 'ON')

  70. Note: Boards which do not support the STAND-BY state do not permit the user
  71.       to make a STAND-BY time-out setting (the area is greyed-out).

  74. 6. How do I install SPEAenergy?
  75. ===============================
  76. -  Start Windows.
  77. -  Start from Main Window the File Manager with doble click its icon.
  78. -  Select drive A: where files of SPEAenergy are located.
  79.    (Only for floppy disk installation, does not apply to CD ROM install.)
  80. -  Start 'SPENERGY.EXE' with double click the file name.
  81. -  The program is installing itself to your harddisk and puts an icon into
  82.    your SPEA V7 group. The SPEAenergy menu comes up and you can change
  83.    the DPMS settings.
  84. -  Activate DPMS settings and confirm your choices by pushing the OK-button.
  85.    SPEAenergy is active now.
