  1. Microsoft Word Viewer version 6.0 for Windows

  4. Microsoft(R) proudly announces the release of Microsoft Word Viewer, a
  5. small application that enables users who do not own Microsoft Word for
  6. Windows(R) to view and print Word documents exactly as they appear in Word.
  7. Word Viewer gives users the flexibility to view page layout, zoom, outline,
  8. headers/footers, footnotes, and annotations. Word Viewer allows you to read
  9. and print Word documents, but it does not allow you to edit them, although
  10. you can copy information from the document and activate OLE objects.

  12. Thanks to Word Viewer, people who own any version of Microsoft Word for
  13. Windows, or Word for the Macintosh(R) versions 4.0 and later, can now share
  14. their documents with users who do not own Microsoft Word. Compressed, Word
  15. Viewer fits onto one 3.5" 1.44 MB floppy disk. We encourage users to copy
  16. Word Viewer freely and distribute it to friends and co-workers along with
  17. documents they have created in Word format.

  19. Use Word Viewer to view Word documents posted on the Internet

  22. This product also allows users who wish to post richly formatted Word
  23. documents on the Internet to share such documents with people who might not
  24. own Microsoft Word. In order to use this product for viewing Word documents
  25. on the Internet, you must configure your Internet browsing tool to
  26. recognize Word Viewer as a helper application. Please consult the owner's
  27. manual of your browsing software in order to learn how to achieve this.
  28. Documents with the suffix ".doc" will be recognized by Word Viewer as Word
  29. files.

  35. Word Viewer to friends and co-workers, or post it onto public electronic
  36. bulletin boards.

  47. Obtaining and Installing Microsoft Word Viewer

  50. Word Viewer is available from any of the sources listed below in the
  51. "Sources for Word Viewer" section. To obtain Word Viewer, download
  52. WORDVU.EXE into an empty directory. WORDVU.EXE is a compressed, self-
  53. extracting file. After you download WORDVU.EXE, run it to extract the files
  54. it contains. Read the INSTALL.TXT, then run WV.EXE to decompress and setup
  55. Word Viewer files.

  57. For additional help on using Word Viewer, further information can be found
  58. in the accompanying file README.DOC, located in the same directory as Word
  59. Viewer. To view this file after installation, run Word Viewer, click on the
  60. file README.DOC in the File Open dialog, and then click on the OK button.

  62. Distributing Word Viewer

  65. If you are posting Word Viewer to a WWW home page please post both the
  66. WORDVU.EXE and this file, WORDVU.HTM. (If you are posting to a non-Web
  67. electronic service, please use the equivalent WORDVU.TXT file available
  68. from any of the non-Web sites referenced below.)

  70. If you choose to give Word Viewer to anyone on a floppy disk, copy WV.EXE
  71. and INSTALL.TXT, rather than copying each of the individual files that
  72. appear after Word Viewer decompresses. Word Viewer's self-extracting
  73. archive achieves both decompression and installation. Simply copying the
  74. product files to another computer may not install Word Viewer properly.
  75. Also, you will find that WV.EXE and INSTALL.TXT will fit onto an empty
  76. formatted 3.5" HD Disk, while all the decompressed product files will not.

  78. System Requirements for using Word Viewer

  82. *    4 MB of memory (6 MB recommended)
  83. *    3 MB of hard disk space (6 MB free for installation only)

  86. *    Microsoft Mouse or compatible pointing device

  88. Technical support for Word viewer is limited to a technical white paper
  89. which is available via FastTips, on Library 2 in the MSWORD forum on
  90. CompuServe(R), and on Microsoft World Wide Web server.

  96.      Word Viewer is available under the "What's New" heading on the Home
  97.      Page of Microsoft's World Wide Web server. Microsoft's Home Page can
  98.      be accessed at the Uniform Resource Locator (URL)
  99.      http://www.microsoft.com/ by anyone who is connected to the Internet.

  101. Microsoft Download Service (MSDL):
  102.      If you have a modem, you can obtain Word Viewer from Microsoft
  103.      Download Service (MSDL), which you can reach by calling (206) 936-6735
  104.      (936-MSDL). MSDL is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The
  105.      highest download speed available is 14,400 bits per second (bps). For
  106.      more information about using the MSDL, call 1-800-936-4100 and follow
  107.      the prompts.

  109. CompuServe, GEnie(R), and Microsoft OnLine:
  110.      Word Viewer is located in the Microsoft Software Library. The file
  111.      name is WORDVU.EXE (WORDVU.EXE is also available in Library 2 of the
  112.      MSWORD forum on CompuServe).

  114. The Internet:
  115.      On the Internet, Word Viewer is located on Microsoft anonymous ftp
  116.      server, which you can reach by typing "ftp ftp.microsoft.com" (without
  117.      the quotation marks) at the ">" command prompt. The file is located in
  118.      the /SOFTLIB/MSLFILES subdirectory (notice that this path uses a
  119.      forward slash [/] instead of a backslash [\] character). To download
  120.      the file, type the following commands, pressing ENTER after each line
  121.      (the UNIX operating system is case sensitive):

  129.      Note: The "bi" command changes the download protocol to binary. By
  130.      default, Microsoft server downloads in ASCII mode. If you download
  131.      Word Viewer in ASCII mode, it will be a corrupt file.

  135.      7561. There is a shipping and handling charge for the product. If you
  136.      are outside the United States, contact Microsoft subsidiary for your

  139.      WV.EXE and INSTALL.TXT files are available directly, rather than
