  3. Thank you for downloading DiskSpan.  This is a simple
  4. utility that comes in handy.  It adds a choice to your
  5. SendTo menu called DiskSpan.  When a file is sent to 
  6. it, the file gets compressed and copied to the A: drive.
  7. If it is too big for one disk, it is automatically spanned.
  8. All of the compression and spanning is done using tried
  9. and true PkZip format.  Later you open the SpAn file on with
  10. DiskSpan, it is uncompressed, and unspanned to your specified
  11. location. The best part is that this is FreeWare, you have
  12. nothing to loose!

  17. Installation:
  18. Run Setup.exe - Creates executable in DiskSpan directory
  19.         and shortcut in SendTo Menu. Also associates
  20.         .SpAn files with DiskSpan.

  22. To Span a File or Files
  23. 1. Open Windows Explorer or My Computer to locate the files.
  24. 2. Select the file or files and right click the ones you wish to span.
  25. 3. Select the menu choice SendTo then DiskSpan
  26. 4. Select the options menu to make sure the options fit your needs.
  27. 4. Follow the self explanatory prompts, and press GO!

  29. To expand files:
  30. 1. Open the A: drive using My Computer or Explorer
  31. 2. Right click on the .SpAn file and then SendTo--DiskSpan
  32.    OR - Double click on the file, and DiskSpan should be
  33.    associated with the file.
  34. 3. Again make sure your options are set correctly
  35. 4. Press GO and the files will be uncompressed.

  37. To expand .SpAn files without DiskSpan:
  38. The .SpAn file is simply a .zip file.  You can open it 
  39. with any zipping software such as WinZip. Just rename it
  40. to .zip instead of .span (or set the .zip option in options)

  42. Troubleshooting:
  43. Read the special Troubleshooting file included with the package.
  44. INSTALLATION PROBLEMS:
  45. Problem : No icons appear in start menu. DiskSpan is not associated with .SpAn files.
  46. Solution : When installing DiskSpan you choose a destination directory with a long filename, try installing to the default directory.

  48. Problem : Error prompt during installation says CTL3D32.dll meant for Windows NT.
  49. Solution : This is a DLL incompatibility issue that appears on some systems.  It has no adverse effects, and the program runs fine.  Just ignore the prompt.

  51. Problem : Any other installation error message.
  52. Solution : See if DiskSpan is installed, if it runs correctly then ignore the errors during installation.  If you do notice any adverse effects, feel free to contact me.
