Kingston Technology Company
Driver Diskette
for
EtheRx LC ISA Ethernet Adapter
Version 2.0 September 2, 1997
Copyright (C) 1997 Kingston Technology Company.
All rights reserved.
INTRODUCTION
The driver programs on this diskette support Kingston's EtheRx LC
ISA Ethernet Adapter.
Note: Before using your Kingston Driver Diskette, make sure you make
a duplicate copy. Some of the software options will cause the contents
of the diskette to be modified. By making a copy of the diskette, you
will have an unmodified version available for future use.
The EtheRx LC ISA Ethernet Adapter does not have on-board jumpers
or switches. All the hardware settings are configured via the
QStart installation program, QSTART.EXE. QStart is designed to
make the process of installing your Kingston Ethernet adapter and
network driver software as easy as possible. Regardless of how much
networking experience you have, QStart will help you get up and
running fast. QStart is a DOS program with a Windows like graphical
interface. The program will determine the hardware settings
for PC cards currently installed in your computer and will then
select a conflict-free configuration for your new Ethernet adapter
card. Once the hardware is tested and configured, the Network
Operating System environment of your choice can be installed with a
single mouse click or keystroke.
Note: 1. In order to run QStart, you need to have 450K Bytes
conventional memory under DOS.
2. To use QStart under Windows 95, you need to run the
program under Windows 95 MS_DOS mode. In order to go to
MS_DOS mode, click on 'Start', then click on 'Shut Down'.
Select 'Restart the computer in MS_DOS mode?'.
To run QStart, insert this Driver Diskette into your PC's A drive,
then type:
C:\>A:QSTART [Enter]
In addition, QStart offers a list of command line options. The syntax
for using QStart is as follows: QStart [options...]
The following is a list of valid options:
TEXT
This option forces the program to operate in text mode.
GRAPHICS
Forces the program to try graphics mode.
MULTIPLE
Searches for more than one adapter.
ONE [io]
(Default LC) Stops searching for adapters as soon as one
has been found. The starting I/O address [io] is optional.
ALL
This searches for all of the following series of Kingston
Network Adapters: KNE2000LC, KNE20, KNE30, KNE40, KNE100TX
HELP
The HELP or ? option displays this screen.
WIZARD
Starts the Help Wizard which displays I/O and IRQ information.
EDITOR [fn]
This brings up a text editor with optional file name [fn].
FIX
This will fix a corrupted adapter EEPROM
KEYSTROKE [fn]
Set macro keystroke file name (Default=QSTART.QSM).
(See the section MACROS in QSTART.DOC for more information
about creating and using macros.)
LAUNCH
Start the macro keystroke file playing immediately when
QStart loads.
REALTIME
Macro keystroke file will play back at the same speed as
recorded.
The first letter of the option may be used instead of the entire keyword.
For example: 'QSTART TEXT MULTIPLE' would be the same as 'QSTART T M'.
Once you enter the program, you'll find each screen contains a help
file with tips and information to assist you in making your
selections.
This diskette contains the Novell Netware Universal Client Software
to support a Novell Netware DOS ODI client configuration. One of the
installation options QStart includes is called "ODI Install". This
option will automatically test and configure your adapter, then
install and configure the DOS ODI software on your PC. Once the
operation is complete, you will be ready to logon to your Novell
Netware server.
The DOS ODI software is located in the following directories:
- \DOSODI\VLM
- \DOSODI\NETX
DISKETTE REVISION HISTORY
Version 2.0 August 29, 1997
- Implemented caching of temporary files for QStart on the
hard disk when executing from the floppy disk. This
improves performance of the program in certain
situations.
- Macro record and playback feature added.
- Windows 95 detection enhancement.
- Improvement to QStart to allow it to run with limited functionality
under Windows NT.
QStart now detects Windows NT and runs with limited functionality.
When using Windows NT, QStart's functionality is limited. This is
because Windows NT doesn't allow application programs to communicate
directly with hardware.
In the NT environment, you can use QStart to extract drivers and
view documentation. However, because of Windows NT's restrictions
on hardware access, QStart will not be able to detect or test the
adapter in the NT environment. To test the adapter, you can use
the Windows 95 MS-DOS mode or MS-DOS.
- Added display of Kingston graphic logo on QStart screen.
- Incorporated a print option for QStart's Help Wizard.
- Make changes to adapter EEPROM read/write method, before this
change, setting on adapter with 9008 chip can be overridden by
packet driver.
Version 1.6 August 16, 1996
- Add QSTART command line option FIX to fix corrupted adapter EEPROM
- Add support of Lantastic 7.0, OS/2 Warp connect, Windows NT 4.0
and Novell Client 32
Version 1.5 July 11, 1996
- Add support for BootROM for Novell IPX frame type 802.3
This BootROM supports all LC Adapter hardware.(9007 & 9008 chip set)
Version 1.4 June 27, 1996
- Software new release as a consequence of new hardware design.
- Add support for Wollongong Pathway NDIS2 driver.
Version 1.3 April 15, 1996
- Provide software work around for various brands of EEPROM write
back speed problem.
Version 1.2 December 28, 1995
- Updated DOSODI Driver and Novell LAN Server Driver
Both drivers are Novell NetWare tested and approved
- Updated QStart program
More command line options available.
When I/O conflict occurred or no card found, a 'Help Wizard'
button is available to guide you through the situation.
- Add Revision.doc (driver revision history) for each driver
Version 1.1 (First Version) May 24, 1995
