For Ethernet LAN Adapters
INSTALLATION GUIDE
This software is licensed by SMC for use by its customers only.

This installation guide describes:
o How to update the Windows 95 NETSMC.INF file with the
NETSMC.INF file provided on the SuperDisk.
o How to install the driver files under Windows 95.
Note: This driver supports all 8216 (Ultra), 80xx (Elite),
80xx (PLUS) Series, and 8416 (EtherEZ) ISA and Micro
Channel Ethernet adapters.
COPYING THE DRIVER FILES FROM THE ETHER.EXE DOWNLOAD
1. Boot the computer to the DOS prompt.
2. Insert the disk with the ETHER.EXE files into a floppy disk drive.
3. At the DOS prompt change to the C:\WINDOWS\INF directory with the
command
C:> CD C:\WINDOWS\INF
4. Rename the NETSMC.INF file with the command
C:> REN NETSMC.INF NETSMC.SAV.
5. Copy the new NETSMC.INF file from the WIN95 directory with the command
C:> COPY A:\WIN95\NETSMC.INF
6. Remove the Disk from the floppy disk drive and turn off the
machine.
7. Install the SMC 8416 adapter, attach network cable, and power
up the machine. Windows 95 starts to boot up. Make sure your
Windows 95 CD ROM is in the CD ROM drive.
INSTALLING THE DRIVER FILES
The following procedure describes how to install the SMC driver
and assumes that Windows 95 is already installed. For information
on customizing your installation and Windows desktop, refer to
your Windows 95 manual.
For Plug and Play Adapters:
1. Windows 95 will notify you that it has detected "New Hardware..."
and begins installing files from the Windows 95 CD ROM.
2. When prompted for an SMC driver, insert the Disk with the down load
file (ETHER.EXE) into the floppy disk drive.
3. At the "Copy files from" prompt, enter the drive letter where the disk is inserted
For example: A:\WIN95
4. When prompted to restart the computer to finish the installation,
click on the "Yes" button.
For Non-Plug and Play Adapters:
1. Double-click on the My Computer icon in the Main window.
2. Double-click on the Control Panel icon.
3. Double-click on the Add New Hardware icon.
4. Click on the Next button.
5. Select "Yes" to let Windows 95 search for the new adapter and
click on the Next button.
6. Click on Finish to finish installing the new adapter.
7. Windows 95 begins installing files from the Windows 95 CD ROM.
8. When prompted for an SMC driver, insert the SuperDisk into the floppy
disk drive.
9. At the "Copy files from" prompt, enter the drive letter where the disk is inserted
For example: A:\
10. When prompted to restart the computer to finish the installation,
click on the "Yes" button.
