NETWORK CARD INSTALLATION NOTES
Important PROTOCOL.INI Parameters:
Configuration information is stored in the PROTOCOL.INI file. Two
important PROTOCOL.INI parameters are SIA_MODE, which defines the
serial interface connection (including full-duplex or half-duplex
operation), and SLOT, which specifies the PCI slot number location of
the network card.
SMC9334BDT EtherPower 10/100 network card ONLY:
During the network adapter selection process, the SMC9334BDT
EtherPower 10/100 dual channel network card may be represented as two
SMC9332BDT EtherPower 10/100 adapters (one for each channel). If no
option for 'SMC9334BDT EtherPower 10/100 Dual Channel' is presented,
select the option for 'SMC9332BDT EtherPower 10/100' for both channels.
SMC9332DST EtherPower 10/100 network card ONLY:
Ensure that the line speed (10 Mbps vs. 100 Mbps) configured for the
network card matches the speed of the hub to which it is attached.
The SMC9332DST EtherPower 10/100 network card is default configured
to operate at 100 Mbps.
SMC9332BDT/SMC9334BDT/SMC9332BVT EtherPower 10/100 network cards ONLY:
The Auto-Negotiation feature of these cards will set the operating
speed of the network card (10 Mbps [MB10] or 100 Mbps [MB100]). If the
attached hub is full duplex capable and uses Auto-Negotiation, the
card will configure itself for full duplex operation. If the attached
hub is full duplex capable, but does not use Auto-Negotiation, you must
manually specify full duplex mode. Refer to the MODIFYING THE DATA
RATE section later in this document.
DUAL CHANNEL SUPPORT
EtherPower^2 and SMC9334BDT EtherPower 10/100
The EtherPower^2 Dual Channel PCI Ethernet and the SMC9334
EtherPower 10/100 Fast Ethernet network cards conform to the
PCI-to-PCI Bridge Architecture Specification, Revision 1.0, April 5,
1994. Networking environments that support dual channel operation
include Novell server (32-bit ODI driver), Windows NT, and SCO.
Other networking environments do not support the unique dual channel
capability of the EtherPower^2 or the SMC9334 EtherPower 10/100
network card. These environments include Novell client (DOS ODI
driver), Windows for Workgroups v3.11, and networking environments
that use DOS or OS/2 NDIS2 drivers.
USING EZSTART TO COPY THE DRIVER FILES
You can run EZStart from the SuperDisk or, for faster operation, you
can copy it onto a hard disk and run it from there. To run EZStart from
the hard disk, all files must be copied from the SuperDisk to your
computer's hard drive.
EZStart may copy files back to the SuperDisk to create an installation
diskette. Please make a backup copy of your SuperDisk before using
EZStart.
1. Insert the SuperDisk into a floppy disk drive.
2. Change to the floppy drive where the SuperDisk is installed.
3. To run EZStart from the DOS command line, type:
[path]ezstart<Enter>
To run EZStart in text mode (instead of graphics mode), type
[path]ezstart/T<Enter>
To run EZStart from Microsoft Windows v3.x:
select the 'File' menu in 'Program Manager'. When the 'Run'
dialog box appears, type:
[path]ezstart
in the 'Command Line' box, then select the 'OK' button.
To run EZStart with Windows 95:
1. Select 'Shut Down' from the 'Start' menu
2. Select the option to 'Restart the computer in MS-DOS mode'
NOTE: Do not run EZStart from a DOS window!
To run EZStart with Windows NT or OS/2:
EZStart does not run under these operating systems. Instead,
boot your computer using an MS-DOS operating system.
4. Select 'Custom' from the EZStart main screen.
5. Select 'Drivers/Documents' from the 'Custom Installation' screen.
6. There are two 'Network Drivers and Documentation Selection'
screens. First, select the appropriate vendor from the first
screen. When the screen appears again, select the appropriate
driver (make sure the selection you want is highlighted), then
press the 'Enter' key or select 'OK'.
7. At the 'Network Drivers and Documentation' screen, the default
destination directory and a list of files to be copied to the
default directory are displayed. To accept the default destination
directory, select 'Copy Files'. Otherwise, enter a destination
directory at the prompt and select 'Copy Files'.
8. Follow the prompts to continue the installation.
9. Select 'Exit' to exit EZStart.
10. Remove the SuperDisk from the floppy disk drive.
INSTALLING THE DRIVER FILES
The following section describes how to install Artisoft's LANtastic
Network Software v6.0/7.0 along with the SMC driver file. If you
already have Artisoft's LANtastic Network Software v6.0/7.0 installed
and only want to install the SMC driver, proceed to "Installing the
SMC Driver Only".
o Installing Artisoft's LANtastic Network Software v6.0/7.0 and the

Disk 1 of 4 in your computer's disk drive.
2. Type: a:\install
3. Press the Enter key to start the setup procedure.
4. Follow the on-screen prompts.
5. When the 'Select Network Card' window prompts you for a LAN
driver, sele
ct "NDIS Support for Network cards" followed
by "OK".
6. When you are prompted for the manufacturer's driver diskette,
insert the SuperDisk in your computer's disk drive. Then
specify the path where the modified PROTOCOL.INI resides on the
SuperDisk.
Note: If you used EZStart to copy the driver to a different
Destination Directory, specify that directory's path in step
7. If that directory resides on a diskette other than the
SuperDisk, insert that diskette in your computer's disk
drive.
7. Select "OK".
8. Proceed with the rest of the LANtastic Network Software
v6.0/7.0 driver installation procedure.
9. Reboot your computer.
o Installing the SMC Driver Only
The following procedure describes how to install the SMC driver
and assumes that Artisoft's LANtastic Network Software v6.0/7.0 is
already installed.
1. Copy the driver file, SMCPWR.DOS, to C:\LANTASTI.
2. Make sure the driver is loaded in the CONFIG.SYS file,
for example:
DEVICE=C:\LANTASTI\SMCPWR.DOS /I:C:\LANTASTI
3. Make sure the DRIVERNAME=SMCPWR$ statement exists in your
PROTOCOL.INI under the network card label.
MODIFYING THE DATA RATE
SMC9332DST EtherPower 10/100 ONLY:
Ensure that the data rate (10 Mbps or 100 Mbps) configured for the
network card matches the speed of the hub to which it is attached.
Set the network card to operate at the correct data rate (10 Mbps
or 100 Mbps) using the PROTOCOL.INI parameter DATA_RATE.
To operate at 10 Mbps, remove the comment (;) indicator from the
line:
DATA_RATE=MB10
This makes 10 Mbps the active data rate selection.
Other parameters, such as the active serial interface, are also
specified using the PROTOCOL.INI file.
If the SIA_MODE is set to AUTOSENSE, the driver will detect and
set the correct data rate during power-up.
SMC9332BDT/SMC9334BDT/SMC9332BVT EtherPower 10/100 ONLY:
This network card supports NWAY (Auto-Negotiation). Setting the
SIA_MODE to AUTOSENSE will allow the driver to automatically
detect the line speed (10 Mbps [MB10] or 100 Mbps [MB100]) and
operate at the highest possible data rate.
The recommended setting for the SIA_MODE is AUTOSENSE. If you
manually set the SIA_MODE to anything other than AUTOSENSE,
(for example, either half-duplex or full-duplex operation), the
settings you select must be supported by the hub to which you
are attaching.
The methods used to manually specify operating speed will vary
depending on your networking software and the driver being used.
All SMC drivers for the SMC9332BDT/SMC9334BDT EtherPower 10/100
network card support five different data rate settings.
AUTOSENSE - when using this default setting, the driver
will automatically detect the line speed of the attached hub
and set the network card to operate at the highest possible data rate
10 Mbps
Full duplex - network card operates at 10 Mbps only
10 Mbps
Half duplex - network card operates at 10 Mbps only
100 Mbps
full duplex - network card operates at 100 Mbps only
100 Mbps
half duplex - network card operates at 100 Mbps only
After completing the installation and configuration, you must
reboot your computer.
