'Aimless Cow' Animation
A Simple Demonstration of the LightWave 3.0 Bones function.
Copyright 1993 Daniel S. Milling Jr.
This simple little animation was something I just felt like doing one
night. I took the Cow Object, included with the Video Toaster software,
and felt like making it walk around.
The easiest way to do this would have been to morph between a whole
bunch of modified cow objects. This takes up more memory by having to
load multiple objects. It also makes the movement a bit too mechanical.
To get a more organic effect, I chose to use the Bones function of
LightWave 3.0.
The object ended up needing about 30 or so bones to give a realistic
walking motion. The bones were a mixture of a few limited region and
mostly 'regular' bones depending on where each bone was located.
The main problem with bones were the unwanted side-effects. Usually
using limited region would fix this, but not always. So, many times this
problem can only be manuevered around by adding another bone to counter-act
the unwanted effect. Unfortunately there wasn't much distance between the
moving elements and the body. This is why it took about 30 bones to get the
motion of the legs, tail and head (which isn't apparent in this little test
animation) to look relatively realistic. Most of the bones were involved
with the actual motion but about 8-10 ended up as anchors.
I'm sure I could cut down the bone count to less than half that and smooth
out the movement if I wanted to, but I'll leave that for another day.
This animation was rendered at medium res and reduced to 320x200 ham for
quick playback. The average render time per frame was about 45 seconds
on my 28mhz '040.
This is just a test animation to see if all of the movements were
acceptable. If you think the cow walks funny, I just yanked out my copy
of 'Excalibur' and watched a couple of horses walk around. Close enough.
It's a bit rough but what can you expect from a few hours of goofing
around? :^)
