  2. MICROSOFT BOOKSHELF 1992 FOR WINDOWS
  3. ------------------------------------
  4.  
  5. Multimedia is a new technology, and the new combinations of 
  6. hardware and software can present a variety of potential 
  7. performance and configuration problems.  This file contains 
  8. the following information:
  9.  
  10. o  Tips for correcting sound problems, for improving the 
  11. speed of your computer, and for improving print quality from 
  12. Bookshelf.
  13.  
  14. o  Information about the integration of Bookshelf and Word 
  15. for Windows.

  22. Correcting Sound Problems
  23. ----------------------------

  25. If you don't hear anything when you play animations or 
  26. pronunciations, make sure that:
  27.  
  28. o  you have a sound card installed.
  29.  
  30. o  you have a speaker hooked up to the jack on your sound 
  31. card (not to the CD-ROM drive).
  32.  
  33. o   the volume is set to an audible level.
  34.  
  35. You can test sounds with the Sound option in the Windows 
  36. Control Panel.  If you hear no sound when testing sounds, 
  37. open the Drivers option to check the sound driver files.  
  38. These drivers must be compatible with your sound board.  
  39. Make sure that drivers for both wave files and MIDI files 
  40. are displayed in the Drivers dialog box.  If necessary, set 
  41. up your sound board again.  If you still can't hear sounds, 
  42. call the sound board manufacturer to verify that you are 
  43. using the correct drivers and that there are no hardware 
  44. conflicts.
  45.  
  46. If you have installed Windows 3.1 and can play 
  47. pronunciations but not musical examples, you may need to 
  48. change your MIDI map.  During the installation of Windows 
  49. 3.1, Setup renames the MIDIMAP.CFG file to MIDIMAP.OLD and 
  50. installs a new MIDIMAP.CFG file.  If your original 
  51. MIDIMAP.CFG file contains custom setups that use sound 
  52. drivers not provided by Windows, you can change the port 
  53. settings using the MIDI Mapper option in the Control Panel, 
  54. or you can use your original file by performing the 
  55. following steps:
  56.   1.  Rename MIDIMAP.CFG to MIDIMAP.WIN.
  57.   2.  Rename MIDIMAP.OLD to MIDIMAP.CFG.
  58.  
  59.  
  60. Improving Performance
  61. ------------------------
  62.  
  63. Microsoft Bookshelf 1992 for Windows uses a lot of your 
  64. system memory to display graphics and animations.  If you 
  65. find that Bookshelf runs slowly, consider doing the 
  66. following to improve your computer's performance:
  67.  
  68. o  If your computer is a 386, set up a permanent Windows 
  69. swap file on your hard drive.  See your Windows User's Guide 
  70. for more information.  Windows usually creates a temporary 
  71. swap file, but if your hard disk is full or fragmented, this 
  72. temporary file can become unavailable.  Make the size of the 
  73. permanent swap file at least 2048K.
  74.  
  75. o  If your computer runs at 20 MHz or slower and you have 
  76. only 2 MB of RAM, use a 16-color driver for your display, 
  77. even if you have a 256-color card.  To change the display 
  78. driver, run the Microsoft Windows Setup program from DOS or 
  79. Windows and select the standard VGA driver.
  80.  
  81. o  If you have a 386 with only 2MB of RAM and you encounter 
  82. out-of-memory errors, or if sound is not continuous and 
  83. animations are slow, choose About Program Manager from the 
  84. Help menu in the Program Manager window, and check to see if 
  85. you're running in Standard mode.   If the dialog box shows 
  86. Windows is using Standard mode, exit and then restart 
  87. Windows by typing WIN at the DOS prompt.
  88.  
  89. o  Run Bookshelf without the SmartDrive device driver.  To 
  90. disable SmartDrive, open the CONFIG.SYS file in Notepad, 
  91. change the DEVICE=SMARTDRV.SYS line to REM 
  92. DEVICE=SMARTDRV.SYS, and then save the edited CONFIG.SYS 
  93. file.

  95. o  Defragment ("clean up") your hard disk by running a disk 
  96. defragmentation program.
  97.  
  98. o  Make sure that your CD-ROM drive is MPC-compatible (that 
  99. the drive can transfer data from the CD at 150 KB per second 
  100. while using less than 40% of the CPU bandwidth AND that the 
  101. drive has an average seek time of less than one second. 
  102. Check the documentation that came with your CD-ROM drive.
  103.  
  104. o  Add more extended memory to your computer.  You can 
  105. determine how much extended memory is available by typing 
  106. MEM and pressing Enter at the DOS prompt.  You need a 
  107. minimum of two megabytes of memory to play sounds and run 
  108. animations.
  109.  
  110. For comprehensive documentation on improving performance, 
  111. consult your Windows manual.

  113. Improving Printing
  114. --------------------
  115.  
  116. If you are not satisfied with Bookshelf's text formatting, 
  117. you can use the Copy command on the Edit menu to copy the 
  118. text, then paste it into a word-processing program for 
  119. formatting and printing.

  122. INTEGRATION OF BOOKSHELF AND WORD FOR WINDOWS
  123. ---------------------------------------------------
  124.  
  125. During Setup, you will be given the option of installing 
  126. the feature that integrates Bookshelf and Word for Windows
  127. if your system meets the following conditions:
  128.  
  129. o  A non-network version of Word for Windows 2.0 is installed.
  130.  
  131. o  Microsoft Windows version 3.1 or higher is installed.
  132.  
  133. o  Your WIN.INI file contains a [Microsoft Word 2.0] section 
  134. that includes a programdir={path} line and specifies a valid
  135. WINWORD.EXE file.
  136.  
  137. o  There is enough space on your hard drive to support this
  138. feature.
  139.  
  140. If you install the integration feature, the Setup program 
  141. modifies NORMAL.DOT, Word's global document template, to 
  142. customize the Word Toolbar and menus.  Changes you have made to 
  143. the Toolbar, to the default menus, and so on, are preserved.
  144. Your original NORMAL.DOT file is saved as NORMAL.WAB.  
  145.  
  146. The integration feature also adds three items to Bookshelf: 
  147. a Send button, a Send command on the Edit menu, and the 
  148. Word & Bookshelf command on the Bookshelf Help menu.
  149.  
  150. Setup also modifies your WIN.INI file, setting options in 
  151. the [Microsoft Word 2.0] section and adding a [Bookshelf] 
  152. section.
