  1.    Hercules SUPERSTATION 3D Windows 3.1 Driver Installation
  2.  
  3.    The Hercules SUPERSTATION 3D Windows 3.1 Drivers Diskette contains both
  4.    256 color and true color drivers for Microsoft Windows 3.1.  Please
  5.    be sure that TIGA is installed and working before you begin the Windows
  6.    3.1 setup procedure.  If you received the SUPERSTATION Windows 3.1
  7.    Drivers Diskette as an update, see the following "Update Note."

  9.    Update Note:
  10.  
  11.    If you are using a Hercules software release earlier than Release 2.0
  12.    (for example 1.2, or 1.6) it is necessary to update your TIGA file set
  13.    to Hercules Release 2.0 or higher before installing the true color
  14.    Windows 3.1 drivers.  The README file that accompanies Hercules Release
  15.    2.0 contains an explanation of how to perform a TIGA file set update.  
  16.    Before installing the Hercules true color Windows drivers please perform
  17.    this important step.  It is not necessary to update your TIGA files in
  18.    order to use the 256 color driver supplied here.

  20.    Setup Procedure
  21.  
  22.    These instructions describe two different installation scenarios:
  23.  
  24.    A)  Updating an Existing Windows 3.1 Installation - This assumes that
  25.        Windows 3.1 is currently installed and working with an existing
  26.        display driver (such as TIGA or VGA).
  27.  
  28.    B)  First Time Windows 3.1 Installation - This assumes that you have
  29.        Microsoft's Windows 3.1 distribution disks and are copying the files
  30.        to your computer for the first time.
  31.  
  32.    Please read the installation scenario that applies to you, and then
  33.    read the section below titled "Using Hercules Windows 3.1 Drivers."

  35.    Updating an Existing Windows 3.1 Installation:

  37.    1)  Log onto your Windows 3.1 directory.
  38.  
  39.    2)  Type SETUP [Enter]
  40.  
  41.    3)  Setup will analyze your configuration and display the current system
  42.        settings.   Move the cursor bar up to the "Display:" line and press
  43.        [Enter].
  44.  
  45.    4)  Setup will present a list of display drivers.  Press the [Down-Arrow]
  46.        key to scroll to the bottom of the list and highlight "Other," press
  47.        [Enter].

  49.    5)  Setup prompts you to insert the disk provided by the hardware
  50.        manufacturer.  Place the Hercules SUPERSTATION Windows 3.1
  51.        Drivers Diskette in a floppy drive and specify that floppy drive
  52.        for Setup. For example A:\.  Press [Enter].

  54.    6)  Setup will read the Hercules disk and present a list of driver
  55.        options:
  56.                       SUPERSTATION - 16.7M Colors (512x480)
  57.                       SUPERSTATION - 16.7M Colors (640x480)
  58.                       SUPERSTATION - 16.7M Colors (756x486)
  59.                       SUPERSTATION - 16.7M Colors (768x576)
  60.                       SUPERSTATION - 256 Colors (Large fonts)
  61.                       SUPERSTATION - 256 Colors (Small fonts)
  62.                       SUPERSTATION - 32,768 Colors (1024x768)
  63.                       SUPERSTATION - 32,768 Colors (640x480)
  64.                       SUPERSTATION - 32,768 Colors (800x600)

  67.    7)  Choose the driver that you wish to install by moving the cursor
  68.        bar to this option, press [Enter].  If you wish to install drivers
  69.        for multiple color depths (256 colors, 32,768 colors and 16.7
  70.        million colors) you must run SETUP (from DOS) multiple times,
  71.        choosing one option for each color depth.

  73.        The 256 Colors (Small fonts) option uses VGA fonts and resources
  74.        and is best for 640x480 and 800x600 resolutions.  You may also like
  75.        this option if you have a large monitor and want to use smaller
  76.        fonts at 1024x768 resolution in order to get more screen "real
  77.        estate."  The (Large fonts) option uses 8514 fonts and resources
  78.        and is best for 1024x768 or higher resolution.

  80.        Reminder:  If you choose a true color driver, be sure that you are
  81.        using Hercules Release 2.0 TIGA file set (or later).

  83.    8)  Press [Enter] to accept the configuration.

  85.    9)  Setup may find an existing driver already installed for Windows 3.1
  86.        and present a screen prompting you to press [ESC] to replace the
  87.        existing driver or [Enter] to keep the existing driver.  If Setup
  88.        asks this question, press [ESC] to copy the new driver from the
  89.        Hercules disk.

  91.    10) Follow the prompts.  Setup may ask you to supply additional disks or
  92.        specify a path to a disk.

  94.    11) After Setup has copied all of the necessary files and updated your
  95.        SYSTEM.INI file, the program will return to DOS.

  98. First Time Windows 3.1 Installation
  99.  
  100.    1)  Place your Windows 3.1 disk #1 in a floppy drive, log onto that drive
  101.        and type SETUP [Enter].
  102.  
  103.    2)  Setup will ask you if you wish to perform an "Express" setup or a
  104.        "Custom" setup.  Press C to choose Custom.
  105.  
  106.    3)  Specify the path for your desired Windows 3.1 installation and press
  107.        [Enter].
  108.  
  109.    4)  Setup will analyze the current installation and display the current
  110.        system settings.   Move the cursor bar up to the "Display:" line and
  111.        press [Enter].

  113.    5)  Setup will present a list of display drivers.  Press the [Down-Arrow]
  114.        key to scroll to the bottom of the list and highlight "Other," press
  115.        [Enter].

  134.    8)  Choose the driver that you wish to install by moving the cursor bar

  137.        million colors) you must run SETUP (from DOS) multiple times,
  138.        choosing one option for each color depth.  In a first time
  139.        installation, it is best to select a 256 color driver.  You can
  140.        revisit the Setup program again to copy additional drivers
  141.        once Windows is installed.

  143.        The 256 Colors (Small fonts) option uses VGA fonts and resources and
  144.        is best for 640x480 and 800x600 resolutions.  You may also like this
  145.        option if you have a large monitor and want to use smaller fonts at

  153.    9)  Press [Enter] to accept the configuration.

  155.    10) Follow the prompts as Setup copies file from the Hercules and
  156.        Microsoft disks.  After Setup has copied all of the necessary files
  157.        and updated your SYSTEM.INI file, the program will return to DOS.

  160.    Using the Hercules SUPERSTATION Windows 3.1 Drivers
  161.  
  162.    256 Color Driver:
  163.    The 256 color driver for the SUPERSTATION requires that the resolution
  164.    be set to the desired 256 color mode before starting Windows.  Use the
  165.    STATION (or CTM) utility supplied on the SUPERSTATION Setup Executive
  166.    Diskette to make this selection.  For example, if you wish to use the
  167.    256 color driver at 800x600 resolution, you must set this resolution
  168.    before starting Windows.  On the SUPERSTATION Model GB820,  this is done
  169.    by typing "STATION 800x600x8x2 [Enter]."  On the SUPERSTATION Model GB860,
  170.    this is done by typing "CTM [Enter]" and choosing the 800x600x8 menu item.

  172.    True Color Drivers
  173.    The true color drivers set the selected color depth and resolution when
  174.    Windows starts.  Upon termination, the driver restores the TIGA mode
  175.    that was current when Windows was launched.
  176.  
  177.    Switching Between Hercules Display Drivers
  178.  
  179.    If you have multiple drivers installed (as described above), you can
  180.    select between them by running Windows Setup from the desktop.  This
  181.    method is an easy way to go between 256 color operation and true color
  182.    operation.  To select between installed drivers:
  183.  
  184.    1)  Double click on the Windows Setup icon.
  185.  
  186.    2)  From the Options menu, select "Change System Settings..."
  187.  
  188.    3)  Pull down the menu of Display options.
  189.  
  190.    4)  Select the desired driver.
  191.  
  192.    5)  If you have installed this driver, Windows will inform you that a
  193.        driver for this display is already on the system.  Click on the
  194.        "Current" button.
  195.  
  196.    6)  Click on the "Restart Windows" button to restart Windows at the
  197.        new display format.
  198.  
  199.    Windows will exit and start again in the new format.

  202.    Technical Notes:
  203.  
  204.    The Hercules drivers support several options in the SYSTEM.INI file.
  205.    Only one option (the PrepCurs= line) should ever be modified by the user.
  206.    The Setup program sets the other options to effect changes required by
  207.    the drivers - do not (under penalty of great inconvenience to yourself)
  208.    alter these settings.

  211.    tigafont = 0  selects 96 LPI value and small fonts and resources for the
  212.                  256 color driver
  213.           1  selects 120 LPI value and large fonts and resources for the
  214.                  256 color driver
  215.  
  216.    [HercTiga]
  217.    BoardID =     Required by VDDHTIGA to identify Hercules product.
  218.  
  219.    TigaMode =    Specifies the mode to be set by the true color drivers.
  220.  
  221.    PrepCurs = 1  Turn cursor off and on around BitBlt operations in the
  222.                  true color drivers.  Provides faster BitBlt but results
  223.                  in a flickering cursor. (Default = 1)
  224.           0  Do not turn cursor off and on around BitBlt operations in
  225.                  the true color drivers.  Results in a stable cursor, but
  226.                  at the expense of speed, as much as 25% slower BitBlt
  227.                  operations.
