  4. One or more files in this directory originally had names that
  5. are illegal for CD-ROM discs. We had to change their names in
  6. order to include them on the disc. You needn't worry which ones are.
  7. Just copy all files in this subdirectory to a floppy diskette. Then run the
  8. program FIXNAME.BAT from the floppy. It will rename the files.

  16.           Impression Installation and Configuration diskette

  20. Thank you for buying the Impression graphics controller from Matrox. We hope
  21. that you will find it a valuable addition to your Windows-based desktop
  22. publishing system.

  24. Before you begin, please make a backup copy of the diskettes you've received
  25. with Impression.

  29. Directory structure 
  30. ===================

  32. When you run the install program provided on this diskette, the following
  33. directory structure will be created: 
  34.  
  35.                \IMPRESS

  41. The \UTIL directory is used for Impression's utility programs and files.
  42. The \CONFIG directory is used for the Impression configuration.
  43. Note that you can select a destination directory other than \IMPRESS
  44. if you wish.

  48. Files description

  51. After the installation, you will find the following files on your disk:
  52.  
  53.    Under CONFIG directory:
  54.  
  55.      - CONFIG.EXE   : This program is used to configure the IMPRESSION.
  56.      - CONFIG.HLP   : Data file used by CONFIG program.
  57.      - IMPRESS.CFG  : Configuration summary produced by CONFIG program.
  58.      - !MTXnnnn.CFG : Configuration file for an EISA system.
  59.  
  60.    Under UTIL directory:
  61.  
  62.      - ILOAD.EXE    : Program that load The WINSHELL.OUT program in the
  63.                       Impression memory.
  64.      - WINSHELL.OUT : Program that must be loaded in the Impression memory
  65.                       before you can use WINDOWS 3.1 .
  66.      - IMPRESS.BAT  : Batch file that will load WINSHELL.OUT in the 
  67.                       Impression memory using ILOAD program. This file
  68.                       can be called from your Autoexec.bat file. 
  69.      - DIAG.EXE     : This file permits the user to run some diagnostics
  70.                       on the Impression board.
  71.      - DIAG.HLP     : Data file used by DIAG program.
  72.      - PATTERN.EXE  : Program used by CONFIG and DIAG programs to draw a
  73.                       pattern in the Impression's frame buffer. Should
  74.                       not be run by the user.
  75.      - IDUMP.EXE    : Lists the contents of the Impression's EEPROM. Should
  76.                       not be run by the user.
  77.      - IRESET.EXE   : Re-execute the BIOS initialization (as at power-up).
  78.                       Should not be run by the user.
  79.      - TESTCOMM.EXE : This program test the communication between the host
  80.                       and the Impression. It should be run only if WINDOWS
  81.                       cannot start correctly. It is possible that your
  82.                       system hangs (stops working) at the end of this
  83.                       test. Is so, you will have to reboot your system.

  87. Installation procedure
  88. ======================
  89.  
  90. There are installation instructions provided in the manual, which is called
  91. the "Impression Installation and User's Guide for Windows 3.1". Briefly, the
  92. installation consists of the following steps: 
  93.  
  94. 1. Plug Impression into an appropriate slot in your computer. Leave all 
  95.    switches in the as-shipped position (Looking at the board so the video 
  96.    connector is seen above the switches, then all switches are in the Left 
  97.    position.)
  98.  
  99. 2. Connect the VGA pass-through cable and the VGA terminator only if  
  100.    you have a single-screen system. 
  101.  
  102. 3. Connect your high-resolution monitor to Impression's video output. 
  103.  
  104. 4. Run the install program from this diskette.  If you are using drive A,
  105.    then enter:
  106.  
  107.         a:       <ENTER>
  108.         install  <ENTER>
  109.

  111. 5. Run the configuration program, either by continuing when prompted from
  112.    the install program, or by entering:
  113.  
  114.         cd \impress\config  <ENTER>
  115.         config              <ENTER>
  116.  
  117.                                                                 
  118. 6. Run the diagnostics by entering:
  119.  
  120.         cd \impress\util  <ENTER>
  121.         diag              <ENTER>
  122.

  124. 7. Install your Windows 3.1 driver by running Windows Setup and using 
  125.    the "Impression Windows 3.1 Driver" diskette when prompted.

  129. Important notes
  130. ===============

  134.         The INSTALL program (for IMPRESSION) can update your Autoexec.bat
  135.         so that the Impression program is loaded to the board automatically 
  136.         each time you reboot your computer. The added line looks like this :
  137.         
  138.                         CALL C:\IMPRESS\UTIL\IMPRESS
  139.  
  140.         If you are using DOS version earlier then 3.3, please delete this
  141.         line and insert the contents of the IMPRESS.BAT file that you can 
  142.         find in the IMPRESS\UTIL directory.

  145.     2) 
  146.  
  147.         The Autoexec.bat file that will be updated by the INSTALL program
  148.         will be the one on the root directory of the drive on which you
  149.         want to install the software. If this destination drive is not the
  150.         'boot' drive, you should update your autoexec.bat file yourself by
  151.         adding the line that is displayed by the INSTALL program.

  156.         For the owners of a Compaq 386 25MHz with caching system : There
  157.         is a switch on the system board (Switch number 3 on System DIP
  158.         Switches) that specify the CACHABLE MEMORY RANGE. Be sure to set
  159.         that switch in the ON position (0-12 MByte), else WINDOWS 3.1 will
  160.         not start up if the Impression is mapped above 1 Megabyte.

  163. Problems?

  166. If you have problems with your installation, please review the detailed
  167. installation procedure given in the manual, including the Troubleshooting
  168. section provided, before contacting the Customer Support Group at Matrox.
