MPC WIZARD NOTE:
---------------
One or more files in this directory originally had names that
are illegal for CD-ROM discs. We had to change their names in
order to include them on the disc. You needn't worry which ones are.
Just copy all files in this subdirectory to a floppy diskette. Then run the
program FIXNAME.BAT from the floppy. It will rename the files.

Impression Installation and Configuration diskette
==================================================
Thank you for buying the Impression graphics controller from Matrox. We hope
that you will find it a valuable addition to your Windows-based desktop
publishing system.
Before you begin, please make a backup copy of the diskettes you've received
with Impression.
Directory structure
===================
When you run the install program provided on this diskette, the following
directory structure will be created:
\IMPRESS
|
-----------
| |
\UTIL \CONFIG
The \UTIL directory is used for Impression's utility programs and files.
The \CONFIG directory is used for the Impression configuration.
Note that you can select a destination directory other than \IMPRESS
if you wish.
Files description
=================
After the installation, you will find the following files on your disk:
Under CONFIG directory:
- CONFIG.EXE : This program is used to configure the IMPRESSION.
- CONFIG.HLP : Data file used by CONFIG program.
- IMPRESS.CFG : Configuration summary produced by CONFIG program.
- !MTXnnnn.CFG : Configuration file for an EISA system.
Under UTIL directory:
- ILOAD.EXE : Program that load The WINSHELL.OUT program in the
Impression memory.
- WINSHELL.OUT : Program that must be loaded in the Impression memory
before you can use WINDOWS 3.1 .
- IMPRESS.BAT : Batch file that will load WINSHELL.OUT in the
Impression memory using ILOAD program. This file
can be called from your Autoexec.bat file.
- DIAG.EXE : This file permits the user to run some diagnostics
on the Impression board.
- DIAG.HLP : Data file used by DIAG program.
- PATTERN.EXE : Program used by CONFIG and DIAG programs to draw a
pattern in the Impression's frame buffer. Should
not be run by the user.
- IDUMP.EXE : Lists the contents of the Impression's EEPROM. Should
not be run by the user.
- IRESET.EXE : Re-execute the BIOS initialization (as at power-up).
Should not be run by the user.
- TESTCOMM.EXE : This program test the communication between the host
and the Impression. It should be run only if WINDOWS
cannot start correctly. It is possible that your
system hangs (stops working) at the end of this
test. Is so, you will have to reboot your system.
Installation procedure
======================
There are installation instructions provided in the manual, which is called
the "Impression Installation and User's Guide for Windows 3.1". Briefly, the
installation consists of the following steps:
1. Plug Impression into an appropriate slot in your computer. Leave all
switches in the as-shipped position (Looking at the board so the video
connector is seen above the switches, then all switches are in the Left
position.)
2. Connect the VGA pass-through cable and the VGA terminator only if
you have a single-screen system.
3. Connect your high-resolution monitor to Impression's video output.
4. Run the install program from this diskette. If you are using drive A,
then enter:
a: <ENTER>
install <ENTER>
5. Run the configuration program, either by continuing when prompted from
the install program, or by entering:
cd \impress\config <ENTER>
config <ENTER>
6. Run the diagnostics by entering:
cd \impress\util <ENTER>
diag <ENTER>
7. Install your Windows 3.1 driver by running Windows Setup and using
the "Impression Windows 3.1 Driver" diskette when prompted.
Important notes
===============
1)
The INSTALL program (for IMPRESSION) can update your Autoexec.bat
so that the Impression program is loaded to the board automatically
each time you reboot your computer. The added line looks like this :
CALL C:\IMPRESS\UTIL\IMPRESS
If you are using DOS version earlier then 3.3, please delete this
line and insert the contents of the IMPRESS.BAT file that you can
find in the IMPRESS\UTIL directory.
2)
The Autoexec.bat file that will be updated by the INSTALL program
will be the one on the root directory of the drive on which you
want to install the software. If this destination drive is not the
'boot' drive, you should update your autoexec.bat file yourself by
adding the line that is displayed by the INSTALL program.
3)
For the owners of a Compaq 386 25MHz with caching system : There
is a switch on the system board (Switch number 3 on System DIP
Switches) that specify the CACHABLE MEMORY RANGE. Be sure to set
that switch in the ON position (0-12 MByte), else WINDOWS 3.1 will
not start up if the Impression is mapped above 1 Megabyte.
Problems?
=========
If you have problems with your installation, please review the detailed
installation procedure given in the manual, including the Troubleshooting
section provided, before contacting the Customer Support Group at Matrox.
