II - TIPS/ERRATA/FEATURES/REVISIONS
================================================================================
The following list includes new features and tips for this version of
TurboDLD-Lite and AutoCAD in general.
- The PMODELINE width is as large as possible given the current screen
dimensions and font character size. If less area is desired, switch to a
smaller font size.
- TurboDLD-Lite supports two new font sizes, 6x8 and 12x24.
- The DLDUSAGE command now gives TurboDLD-Lite usage down to the exact number
of bytes being used.
- DLDCOLOR can be run from within AutoCAD, instead of externally as a separate
utility.
- There is no longer a Remove or Overwrite mode for the Display List.
TurboDLD-Lite functions as the Remove mode did in previous DLD versions,
eliminating flashing of erased vectors, without affecting performance.
III - TurboDLD-Lite Installation and General Information
===============================================================================
What does it do?
================
TurboDLD-Lite's main function is to speed up AutoCAD pans, zooms and redraws.
The driver accomplishes this by creating and maintaining a Display List - a
fast-displaying vector list of the current drawing - dramatically increasing
performance on pans and zooms.
What's the Catch?
=================
The only resource used by TurboDLD-Lite is memory. The driver itself takes up
about 35 Kbytes of RAM from extended memory, which means it does not affect
normal DOS operation. The driver is loaded by AutoCAD at AutoCAD load time.
The Display List size can vary from one tenth to three times the size of the
current drawing file.
Thanks for the memory.
======================
You may wish to purchase and install additional RAM before installing
TurboDLD-Lite, since it shares memory with AutoCAD. If AutoCAD is using a lot
of memory, TurboDLD-Lite may not have enough. If there is significant hard disk
activity while you are using TurboDLD-Lite, it may be an indication that you
should add more memory to your system.
AutoCAD R12
===========
To install TurboDLD-Lite with AutoCAD R12:
1) Run FASTACAD.BAT from the \RADXGA subdirectory where INSTALL installed
TurboDLD-Lite and then start AutoCAD.
2) Begin AutoCAD with the reconfigure switch by typing:
ACAD -R
3) Choose option 3, Configure Video Display from the AutoCAD configuration
menu.
4) Type 'Y' at the "Do you want to select..." message to display the
available video options for AutoCAD.
5) Select TurboDLD-Lite by Panacea from the list of display options.
6) Continue installation at the Driver Configuration section below.
AutoCAD R10/386 and R11/386
===========================
To install TurboDLD-Lite with AutoCAD R10/386 and R11/386:
1) Run FASTACAD.BAT from the \RADXGA subdirectory where INSTALL installed
TurboDLD-Lite and then start AutoCAD.
2) Reconfigure AutoCAD to use TurboDLD-Lite by selecting option 5,
Configure AutoCAD from the AutoCAD main menu.
3) From the next menu, select option 3, Configure Video Display.
4) Choose Item 1, P386 ADI 4.0/4.1 as your display device. (for more
information, see the AutoCAD "Installation and Performance Guide".
5) Continue with the Driver Configuration section below.
3D Studio
=========
To install TurboDLD-Lite with 3D Studio 1 & 2:
1) Run PANA3DS.BAT from the \RADXGA sub-directory where INSTALL
installed TurboDLD-Lite.
2) Next, edit your 3D Studio 3DS.SET file found in the 3D Studio
sub-directory.
I) If you are using 3D Studio Rel 1
a) You need to find the line that starts with DEFAULT-DISPLAY.
b) You want to modify it so that the line reads:
DEFAULT-DISPLAY="RCPADI".
c) Also, do the same with the line that starts with MAIN-DISPLAY,
except tha you should omit the double quotes around the RCPADI
(i.e MAIN-DISPLAY=RCPADI).
d) Make sure to remove the ";" (semi-colon) in front of these lines.
e) Also, if you selected to use the 256 color VGA driver during the
setup, you may change the MATERIALS-DISPLAY line in the 3DS.SET
as well.
f) Save your changes and you're ready to use 3D Studio.
II) If you are using 3D Studio Rel 2:
a) You need to find the line that starts with RENDER-DISPLAY.
b) You want to modify it so that the line reads: RENDER-DISPLAY=RCPADI.
c) Also, do the same with the line that starts with MAIN-DISPLAY
(i.e MAIN-DISPLAY=RCPADI).
d) Make sure to remove the ";" (semi-colon) in front of these lines.
e) Also, if you selected to use the 256 color VGA driver during the
setup, you may change the MATERIAL-DISPLAY line in the 3DS.SET as
well.
f) Save your changes and you're ready to use 3D Studio.
3) In the 3D Studio sub-directory you will need to delete or
rename the 3DADI.CFG file. This will allow for the
TurboDLD-Lite to be configured upon executing 3DS.
AutoShade
=========
To use TurboDLD-Lite with AutoShade 2.0 with Renderman:
1) First run the modified FASTACAD.BAT as stated above in the 3D Studio
directions.
2) Then you can configure AutoShade by changing into the AutoShade
sub-directory and type SHADE/R.
3) For the display device, select P386 Autodesk Device Interface display
driver.
4) For the rendering display, select the P386 Autodesk Device Interface
rendering driver.
5) If you are running the display and the rendering screen on the same
monitor (i.e. single monitor), make sure to tell AutoShade this. A
single monitor approach will require a redraw of the display screen
after a rendering screen.
Driver Configuration
====================
After selecting TurboDLD-Lite, P386 or RCPADI as the display device, the
TurboDLD-Lite Driver Configuration menu will appear.
Set-up of TurboDLD-Lite requires configuration of the various operating
parameters of the driver. These parameters have been logically grouped into
menus based on their interaction with AutoCAD. A quick trip through each menu
will complete the configuration process.
The following is a summary of each of the driver configuration menus.
Select Graphics Board/Resolution
Configures TurboDLD-Lite for the graphics board display and
rendering resolutions to be used.
Basic Configuration
Sets AutoCAD screen characteristics, number of text lines in
the command-line area, font size and display mode.
User Interface
Configures parameters for maneuvering within AutoCAD. Includes,
digitizer button controls, edge panning characteristics, and
pop-up menu definitions.
Expert Configuration
Configures operation of TurboDLD-Lite itself. This menu allows
for customization of the driver for maximum speed or to configure
it for memory constraints.
After all parameters have been set, scroll down to the Save and Exit option and
press the F10 key to continue.
Next, configure the standard AutoCAD screen display characteristic and then type
'Y' to accept the changes.
Enter '0' to exit to the AutoCAD drawing editor.
Color Configuration
===================
The final step in setting-up TurboDLD-Lite is to configure the colors for
AutoCAD. From the AutoCAD Command Line, type DLDCOLOR, to start Custom Colors,
TurboDLD-Lite's color configuration utility. Make the desired color changes and
then Save the new color palette and then Exit to return to the drawing editor.
IV - TurboDLD-Lite Commands
===============================================================================
DLDCOLOR
========
Invokes Custom Colors, Panacea's color configuration program.
DLDCOMPACT
==========
Returns unused display list memory back to the AutoCAD memory pool.
DLDDCACHE
=========
This command toggles the TurboDLD's internal drawing cache on and off.
DLDDCACHE is an AutoCAD-wide compressed form of the current viewport which
speeds pans, zooms, and redraws.
DLDDLIST
========
This command toggles the display list function of TurboDLD on and off. Please
note that if the display list is turned off, you will be running AutoCAD as
though you were using a standard non-display list driver: pans, zooms and
redraws will be much slower with DLDDLIST disabled.
DLDECHO
=======
Toggles internal TurboDLD command echoing at the AutoCAD command line. DLDECHO
also enables/disables echoing of menu and button commands.
DLDHELP
=======
Provides a one-line summary for every TurboDLD command. It's recommended that
you flip to the text screen to view the output.
DLDSTAT
=======
This command displays the current TurboDLD status.
DLDUSAGE
========
Use DLDUSAGE if you want a to-the-byte breakdown of how memory is being used,
specifically for display list processing (i.e. split between the display and
fast-redraw lists). DLDUSAGE returns information about how much EMS and Extended
memory is still available, and how much memory each viewport is occupying. Since
AutoCAD can support multiple viewports, it is possible to have multiple display
lists.
DLDVISREGEN
===========
Toggles between the Fast and Visible Regen modes of TurboDLD. A Fast Regen will
create the display list and then display the drawing quickly, all at once.
Visible regen will display the drawing in "chunks" as the display list is
created. This command is a dynamic form of the Regen Mode parameter in the
Expert Configuration Menu.
DLDVER
======
Displays TurboDLD version, serial number and registered user's name.
