  35.    This diskette contains drivers and programs for Windows 3.1 users who
  36.    have a Sound Blaster 16.
  37.  
  38.    If you obtained the drivers and programs mentioned in this file as a ZIP
  39.    file from a bulletin board, please unzip the contents into a diskette
  40.    labeled

  64. III. Installing the drivers
  65. ---------------------------

  67.   Note: If your card does not have the Advanced Signal Processing chip,
  68.         skip steps 2-4.
  69.  
  70.    1. Copy all W*.ACV files to your \SB16\ACV\ sub-directory.  (If you do
  71.       not have a \SB16\ACV\ directory, make one with the command:
  72.       'md c:\sb16\acv [enter]'
  73.  
  74.    2. Copy all W*.CSP files to your \SB16\CSP\ sub-directory.  (If you do
  75.       not have a \SB16\CSP\ directory, make one with the command:
  76.       'md c:\sb16\csp [enter]'
  77.  
  78.    3. Copy the CSP.SYS file to your \SB16\DRV\ sub-directory
  79.  
  80.    4. Check your CONFIG.SYS to make sure you have the following line:
  81.       DEVICE=C:\SB16\DRV\CSP.SYS
  82.  
  83.    5. Start Windows v3.1.
  84.    
  85.    6. Open the Control Panel and select the Drivers icon.
  86.  
  87.    7. At a minimum, you should have the following driver names in the
  88.       Installed Drivers list:
  89.  
  90.         MIDI Mapper
  91.         Timer
  92.         [MCI] CD Audio
  93.         [MCI] MIDI Sequencer
  94.         [MCI] Sound
  95.  
  96.       If you have any Sound Blaster or Adlib drivers installed (other than the
  97.       ones listed above), please remove them with the REMOVE button and restart
  98.       Windows before continuing.  If any of these drivers are not listed,
  99.       please add them before continuing.  (See your Windows manual for details
  100.       on adding these drivers.)  Make sure you restart Windows after making
  101.       changes to the driver list.
  102.  
  103.    8. Click on the ADD button.
  104.  
  105.    9. Select Unlisted or Updated driver and click on OK.
  106.  
  107.   10. Insert the floppy containing the drivers.
  108.  
  109.   11. Type in the drive letter of the floppy drive containing the driver disk.
  110.  
  111.   12. Select Creative Sound Blaster Auxiliary Audio and click on OK.
  112.  
  113.   13. Windows will prompt you for the Sound Blaster I/O address.  The default
  114.       I/O address is 220H.  If you have changed the jumper on your card to
  115.       240H, 260H, or 280H, then select the one you changed.
  116.  
  117.   14. Windows will ask if you want to restart your system.  Click on
  118.       DON'T RESTART, then repeat steps 8, 9, 10, and 11.
  119.  
  120.   WARNING! - Steps 15 and 16 will OVERWRITE your existing MIDIMAP.CFG
  121.          configuration.  If you want to keep your existing configuration,
  122.          click on CANCEL and make a copy of MIDIMAP.CFG before continuing
  123.          the installation process.
  124.  
  125.   15. Select Voyetra / Sound Blaster SuperSAPI FM Driver and click on OK.
  126.  
  127.   16. Windows will ask if you want to use the current SB16FM.DRV
  128.       or install the new SB16FM.DRV - Select NEW and continue on.
  129.  
  130.   17. Windows will prompt you for the Sound Blaster I/O address.
  131.       Repeat the instructions in step 13.
  132.  
  133.   18. Windows will ask if you want to restart your system.  Click on
  134.       DO NOT RESTART, then repeat steps 8, 9, 10, and 11.
  135.  
  136.   19. Select Creative Sound Blaster Wave and MIDI and click on OK.
  137.  
  138.   20. Windows will prompt you for the Sound Blaster Port address, MIDI address,
  139.       Interrupt, and DMA channel. Choose the settings your card is set to and 
  140.       continue on.
  141.  
  142.   21. Windows will ask if you want to restart your system.  Click on
  143.       RESTART.  Windows will then restart.
  144.

  146. IV. What to do if the drivers don't install correctly
  147. -----------------------------------------------------
  148.  
  149.    If you are having problems installing the drivers, here are some things to
  150.    check before you call Technical Support.  Also, be sure to read the
  151.    "Important Notes" section below.
  152.  
  153.    1. Check the size and date of all the driver files in the Windows SYSTEM
  154.       directory against the listing in the section "Diskette Contents".  Make
  155.       sure that the correct drivers have been copied to your hard disk.
  156.  
  157.    2. Open the Driver applet in Control panel.  You should at least have the
  158.       following driver names in the Installed Drivers list:
  159.  
  160.         Creative Sound Blaster  Auxiliary Audio
  161.         Creative Sound Blaster  Wave and MIDI
  162.         MIDI Mapper
  163.         Timer
  164.         Voyetra / Sound Blaster SuperSAPI FM Driver
  165.         [MCI] CD Audio
  166.         [MCI] MIDI Sequencer
  167.         [MCI] Sound
  168.  
  169.       If one or more of these drivers do not exist, you must install the
  170.       driver(s) using the Driver applet in Control Panel (See the Windows
  171.       manual for more details).

  173.    3. Check your SYSTEM.INI by choosing RUN from the File menu of the Program
  174.       Manager, and typing SYSEDIT in the command line box.  Examine the
  175.       [drivers] and [sndblst.drv] sections.  They should look something like
  176.       this:
  177.

  182.           MIDI=sb16fm.drv

  193.    4. If Windows refuses to install a device driver or you get the error
  194.       message "Device not found" when playing a Wave or MIDI file or a
  195.       CD, be sure you have the following settings in the [mci] section of
  196.       SYSTEM.INI
  197.  
  198.           [mci]
  199.           WaveAudio=mciwave.drv
  200.           Sequencer=mciseq.drv
  201.           CDAudio=mcicda.drv
  202.  
  203.       If one or more of these do not exist, you must install the driver(s)
  204.       using the Driver applet in Control Panel (See the Windows manual for
  205.       instructions).  Do not type in the entries into the SYSTEM.INI because
  206.       the files have to be installed into your SYSTEM directory by Windows.

  209. V. If you upgraded from Windows 3.0 to Windows 3.1
  210. --------------------------------------------------
  211.  
  212.    If you upgraded an existing copy of Windows 3.0 or Windows 3.0 with
  213.    Multimedia Extensions to Windows 3.1, here are some special notes to
  214.    consider.
  215.  
  216.    1. If you have lines which read "device=vsbd.386" or "device=vadlibd.386"
  217.       in the [386Enh] section of SYSTEM.INI, please delete them.  These are old
  218.       drivers that have been replaced by VSBPD.386.  The new driver will not
  219.       work correctly until these lines have been removed.
  220.  
  221.    2. Delete the file SBPMIXER.CPL in the Windows SYSTEM directory.  It is no
  222.       longer being supported.  The new SBPMIXER.EXE is now used instead and is
  223.       loaded automatically when you install the Sound Blaster drivers.
  224.  
  225.    3. After installing Windows 3.1, verify that the latest SB16WMIX.EXE,
  226.       MMJBOX.EXE, SB16FM.DRV, SB16AUX.DRV and SB16SND.DRV have been copied to your
  227.       hard disk.  Check the size and date of these files against the listing
  228.       in the section "Diskette Contents".  You can delete any older versions
  229.       that you find in your system.

  232. VI. Important notes
  233. -------------------

  238.    1. The drivers found in the file CREATE.EXE on Microsoft's BBS and in the
  239.       Microsoft Forum on CompuServe are not the latest drivers for Windows 3.1
  240.       and may not work properly.  Please do not use them.
  241.  
  242.    2. The drivers that are included with the Windows 3.1 Resource Kit are not
  243.       the lastest drivers and may not work properly.  Please do not use them.
  244.  
  245.    3. We are including drivers that make use of Device Virtualization.  These
  246.       drivers will allow DOS Apps that use the Sound Blaster to run in Enhanced
  247.       Mode.
  248.  
  249.       Please make sure that a line reading "device=vsbpd.386" exists under the
  250.       [386Enh] section in your SYSTEM.INI.  If you have a line which reads
  251.       "device=vsbd.386", please delete it.  Also, make sure the file VSBPD.386
  252.       is in your Windows SYSTEM directory.  If it is not, copy it from the
  253.       Drivers Disk.
  254.  
  255.    4. The Windows 3.1 drivers can now be used in both Windows 3.0 with
  256.       Multimedia extensions as well as Windows 3.1.  They will check the
  257.       Windows version and use the correct Sound Blaster section name to access
  258.       the settings in the SYSTEM.INI.
  259.  
  260.    5. A MIDI-MAP has been created to make use of the SB16FM.DRV, please use the
  261.       MIDI MAPPER icon under Control Panel to customize it to your requirements.
  262.  
  263.       Under Windows 3.1, MIDI channel 10 is referenced as the drum channel.
  264.       If you are having problems with the FM synth not sounding "right", try
  265.       modifying the configuration with the MIDI Mapper.
  266.
