  35.    This diskette contains drivers and programs for Windows 3.1 users who
  36.    have a Sound Blaster Micro Channel Version.
  37.  
  38.    If you obtained the drivers and programs mentioned in this file as a ZIP
  39.    file from a bulletin board, please unzip the contents into a diskette
  40.    labeled

  62. III. Installing the drivers
  63. ---------------------------
  64.  
  65.    1. Start Windows v3.1.
  66.  
  67.    2. Open the Control Panel and select the Drivers icon.
  68.  
  69.    3. At a minimum, you should have the following driver names in the
  70.       Installed Drivers list:
  71.  
  72.             MIDI Mapper
  73.             Timer
  74.             [MCI] MIDI Sequencer
  75.             [MCI] Sound
  76.  
  77.       If you have any Sound Blaster or Adlib drivers installed, please remove
  78.       them with the REMOVE button and restart Windows before continuing.  If
  79.       any of these drivers are not listed, please add them before continuing.
  80.       (See your Windows manual for details on adding these drivers.)  Make sure
  81.       you restart Windows after making changes to the driver list.
  82.  
  83.    4. Click on the ADD button.
  84.  
  85.    5. Select Unlisted or Updated driver and click on OK.
  86.  
  87.    6. Insert the floppy containing the drivers.
  88.  
  89.    7. Type in the drive letter of the floppy drive containing the driver disk.
  90.  
  91.    WARNING! - The following steps will OVERWRITE your existing MIDIMAP.CFG
  92.               configuration.  If you want to keep your existing
  93.               configuration, click on CANCEL and make a copy of MIDIMAP.CFG
  94.               before continuing the installation process.
  95.  
  96.    8. Select Sound Blaster MIDI Synthesizer and click on OK.
  97.  
  98.    9. Windows will ask if you want to use the current MIDIMAP.CFG or install
  99.       the new MIDIMAP.CFG - Select NEW and continue on.
  100.  
  101.   10. Windows will prompt you for the Sound Blaster I/O address.  The default
  102.       I/O address is 220H.
  103.  
  104.   11. Windows will ask if you want to restart your system.  Click on
  105.       DON'T RESTART, then repeat steps 4, 5, 6, and 7.
  106.  
  107.   12. Select Sound Blaster MCV Wave and MIDI.  Click on OK.
  108.  
  109.   13. Windows will prompt you for the Sound Blaster I/O address, Interrupt, and
  110.       DMA channel. Choose the settings your card is set to and continue on.
  111.  
  112.   14. Windows will ask if you want to restart your system.  Click on
  113.       RESTART.  Windows will then restart.
  114.  
  115.   15. An additional Windows applications is provided.  The filename is
  116.       MMJBOX.EXE.  Please copy them into your Windows directory.
  117.  
  118.  
  119. IV. What to do if the drivers don't install correctly
  120. -----------------------------------------------------
  121.  
  122.    If you are having problems installing the drivers, here are some things to
  123.    check before you call Technical Support.  Also, be sure to read the
  124.    "Important Notes" section below.
  125.  
  126. ** 1. If you installed Windows 3.1 using the "Express Installation,"  Windows
  127.       scanned your hard disk for programs to be installed.  As a result, older
  128.       versions of the Jukebox, and Mixer were installed if they were on your
  129.       hard disk at the time of installation.  Please remove these icons.  To do
  130.       this, click on the icon once to select it, then press the delete key.
  131.       Windows will ask you for confirmation.  Repeat for each icon.
  132.  
  133.    2. Check the size and date of all the driver files in the Windows SYSTEM
  134.       directory against the listing in the section "Diskette Contents".  Make
  135.       sure that the correct drivers have been copied to your hard disk.
  136.  
  137.    3. Open the Driver applet in Control panel.  You should at least have the
  138.       following driver names in the Installed Drivers list:
  139.  
  140.             Creative Sound Blaster MCV MIDI Synthesizer
  141.             Creative Sound Blaster MCV Wave and MIDI
  142.             MIDI Mapper
  143.             Timer
  144.             [MCI] MIDI Sequencer
  145.             [MCI] Sound
  146.  
  147.       If one or more of these drivers do not exist, you must install the
  148.       driver(s) using the Driver applet in Control Panel (See the Windows
  149.       manual for more details).
  150.  
  151.    4. Check your SYSTEM.INI by choosing RUN from the File menu of the Program
  152.       Manager, and typing SYSEDIT in the command line box.  Examine the
  153.       [drivers] and [sndblst.drv] sections.  They should look something like
  154.       this:
  155.

  160.               Wave=sbmcvsnd.drv

  168.    5. If Windows refuses to install a device driver or you get the error
  169.       message "Device not found" when playing a Wave or MIDI file, be sure you
  170.       have the following settings in the [mci] section of SYSTEM.INI
  171.  
  172.               [mci]
  173.               WaveAudio=mciwave.drv
  174.               Sequencer=mciseq.drv
  175.  
  176.       If one or more of these do not exist, you must install the driver(s)
  177.       using the Driver applet in Control Panel (See the Windows manual for
  178.       instructions).  Do not type in the entries into the SYSTEM.INI because
  179.       the files have to be installed into your SYSTEM directory by Windows.

  182. V. If you upgraded from Windows 3.0 to Windows 3.1
  183. --------------------------------------------------
  184.  
  185.    If you upgraded an existing copy of Windows 3.0 or Windows 3.0 with
  186.    Multimedia Extensions to Windows 3.1, here are some special notes to
  187.    consider.
  188.  
  189.    1. If you have a line which reads "device=vsbd.386" in the [386Enh] section
  190.       of SYSTEM.INI, please delete it.  This is an old driver which has been
  191.       replaced by VSBPD.386.  The new driver will not work correctly until this
  192.       line is removed.
  193.  
  194.    2. After installing Windows 3.1, verify that the latest MMJBOX.EXE,
  195.       SBFM.DRV and SBMCVSND.DRV have been copied to your hard disk.  Check the
  196.       size and date of these files against the listing in the section
  197.       "Diskette Contents".  You can delete any older versions that you find
  198.       in your system.

  201. VI. Important notes
  202. -------------------

  207.    1. The drivers found in the file CREATE.EXE on Microsoft's BBS and in the
  208.       Microsoft Forum on CompuServe are not the latest drivers for Windows 3.1
  209.       and may not work properly.  Please do not use them.
  210.  
  211.    2. The drivers that are included with the Windows 3.1 Resource Kit are not
  212.       the lastest drivers and may not work properly.  Please do not use them.
  213.  
  214.    3. Some PS/2 computers receive a "Bus timeout error" or the system locks up
  215.       when running Windows 3.1 in 386 Enhanced Mode.  To get around this
  216.       problem, run Windows in Standard Mode after turning on your machine or
  217.       rebooting it.  Then exit Windows and rerun it in Enhanced Mode.
  218.  
  219.    4. We are including drivers that make use of Device Virtualization.  These
  220.       drivers will allow DOS Apps that use the Sound Blaster to run in Enhanced
  221.       Mode.
  222.  
  223.       Please make sure that a line reading "device=vsbpd.386" exists under the
  224.       [386Enh] section in your SYSTEM.INI.  If you have a line which reads
  225.       "device=vsbd.386", please delete it.  Also, make sure the file VSBPD.386
  226.       is in your Windows SYSTEM directory.  If it is not, copy it from the
  227.       Drivers Disk.
  228.  
  229.    5. The Windows 3.1 drivers can now be used in both Windows 3.0 with
  230.       Multimedia extensions as well as Windows 3.1.  They will check the
  231.       Windows version and use the correct Sound Blaster section name to access
  232.       the settings in the SYSTEM.INI.
  233.  
  234.    6. A MIDI-MAP has been created to make use of the SBFM.DRV, please use the
  235.       MIDI MAPPER icon under Control Panel to customize it to your requirements.
  236.  
  237.       Under Windows 3.1, MIDI channel 10 is referenced as the drum channel.
  238.       If you are having problems with the FM synth not sounding "right", try
  239.       modifying the configuration with the MIDI Mapper.
  240.
